Repeat Objects Along A Path In Affinity Designer

In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how you can take a single object and repeat it along a path in Affinity Designer. This can be useful in creating fun patterns and decorative borders.
To accomplish this, we’ll need to create an object to repeat and then make it into a Textured Image Brush.
Once made into a brush, it can be applied to any shape as a stroke, and you can even draw with it using the Vector Brush Tool.
If you don't want to create the PNG image you can download a copy of it here:

Nice tutorial, but hopefully some day the Affinity team will offer vector equivalents of their vector persona brushes.

I thought they already did? Don't use a lot of brush effect.. But I thought they added a vector paint brush... Correct me if I'm wrong.. Haven't played with it much..

Some brushes like the basic brushes are vector. Most others that have an artistic look to them are usually png images mapped onto a path, just as in this video. One way to tell is to draw a path either with the pen, pencil or vector brush tool, assign a brush to it then zoom in on the path. Depending on the resolution of the png image you may or may not see pixels. Also if you try to outline the path by going to Layer > Expand Stroke, if it's true vector your path will expand into a filled in vector stroke path with actual nodes. If it's not vector Expand Stroke will have no effect. @@neodidi See also someone elses comment below.

@@kevinhouse7143 got it.. Got it.. I think I was mistaking the vector paint bucket or vector fill tool.. My workflow with affinity, mostly logo, mockups, websites and UI really haven't required me to use a vector brush.. But I find it interesting when creating patterns and backgrounds which I'd like to try.. So pls, what use is a vector brush for patterns? The new enter key distribution action helps create some interesting designs and patterns... And you can make the design a symbol so a change would affect everything. Kindly let me know what use case that might come in handy.. Thanks

This is one of the biggest missing features of Affinity Designer right now. I use Vectorstyler for things like this now because it does offer 100% vector brushes

You can also make the spiral object using Spiral Tool ("Use Cusped Segment" setting), and adjust the turns accordingly. The best part of it is, obviously, you can tweak the line's width as your heart's delight.

At your previous video regarding how to make custom brushes in Affinity, you said that in order to change the color of the stroke, we have to go to New Adjustments and Recolor, while in this one you just change the brush stroke color and the color changes. Could you explain why this happens?

Question : You have two open canvases/windows docked together. One open and one hidden. Can you copy 'by dragging' a vector element from one open window/canvas to the other docked canvas window... without copy-paste? You can do this in illustrator... just drag the element up to the other docked canvases 'name-tab bar' and the window will switch over, to the other canvas ... you can then drop the element into that now open window ( if there's an open layer free ) Can Affinity do this?
