    This video is probably the best explanation of the EV9000 anywhere, Colin certainly knows his stuff. Unfortunately it doesn't quite cover the symptoms of my own 2 machines, power failure to 1 and tape spooling to the other, but I’ve learned a lot today. Thanks again Colin, looking forward to a video about TBC.

    I had it in the golden age of HI8 and then with the arrival of DV I digitized everything and sold it but I'm very, very nostalgic! What editing together with the EV-s1000 and EV-c 500 with the Sony XV-z1000 AV mixer and the Sony Rm-E 700 video editing controller! It makes me want to cry from nostalgia! Greetings from italy.

    Yes, turning off the TBC is a workaround for its failure, but does take away the key feature of this machine. The TBC is very easy to remove and you could probably take just that panel to any electronic repair agent, for a quote to replace all the capacitors.

    Alas no. The UK supplier (Charles Hyde & Son Ltd) went bust and I don't know what happened to their stock, probably in a skip somewhere. All we can do is internet search with the part number and see if anyone still has any. I too have had new ones crack up again after a while. Even when you could get them, they were really expensive. There's no hope of 3D printing them, so we are left high and dry.

    I have an EV-S7000. Had the power supply for the screen on the slide out tray go out. A couple friends offered to fix it. I purchased the Hi8 Sony EV-S9000E new in 1991 along with a JVC Super VHS HR 4700EK. The JVC broke down and I got a new Super VHS deck but it was so light weight that I got the 4700 repaired and sold the new deck. The Sony EV-1000 has had more problems to fix than the later models but was still fine when I needed it a few months ago to transfer 8mm to USB memory stick. All my Hi8 tapes have PCM sound tracks, including my own camcorder recordings. I used a digital 8 deck to transfer but that has no options to include the PCM track instead of the AFM one.

    I am amazed (and equally appalled) at how complex this beautiful machine is. I bought my EV-S7000 brand new (aprox 1991?), but upon pulling it out of storage, it loaded the 1st tape I put in and then refused to do anything else. Most of my tapes to my recollection do not have PCM dubbing (at least the important family events don't). What would be your recommendation on going forward? Do a quick look inside to see if I am dealing with cracked spools? If its anything beyond that like capacitor issues, I would have to bow out. I suppose I'll have to open it up 1st to see what it looks like. - Thanks again for posting so much great understandable info on this device. I truly loved it when it was working.

    Will it eject the tape? If not, the list of possible causes is very large, ranging from power supply issues, capacitor failure on the syscon board, mechanical problems such as sensors or a jammed loading motor. It's non-trivial I'm afraid. Split spools are not likely to be the cause of that particular problem. Having fixed this machine a few months ago, the TBC board has now failed, I'll do a video about repairing just that board later this year when I get my new workshop.

    No, you have to split the machine apart by taking the bottom off. That does mean taking the front cover off to gain access to all the screws. it should take about 10 - 15 minutes to get the bottom section split off the machine. By the way, just today I've been replacing all the surface mount capacitors in the TBC circuit for one of these machines. Quite time consuming, but now I have the right soldering equipment, it's not too hard.

    Hi Colin, amazing, and super video!! I pulled my s9000 apart and there they were...cracked spools. Plus I've had the fishy smell and drawer display is dead. I suppose I can fix that by replacing the caps. But the spool gears? Are they really non sourcable? Also another symptom (which maybe due to the spool gears), is tracking problem. In the menu, I can set the tracking ok at 2x speed, but at playback normal, there is a band of noise over a third of the lower screen. Do you think the spool gears will fix that or could that be a serious board failure?

  • @video99couk

    @video99couk

    4 жыл бұрын

    Some people report that they have been able to repair the split spools, but it's not something I've managed to do so you're on your own with that. Mistracking can be caused by multiple things but you need to check that the tape is running flat with no crumples. Occasionally the tape guides can go out of alignment on other Video8 models but I've not know that on the EVS9000E so don't start twiddling tape guides unless you are sure you need to. The spools are not going to cause mistracking, and it's relatively unlikely to be an electronic fault. I would say that the machine needs some very careful attention from someone who knows what they are doing. If you're not used to working on equipment like this, you are likely to wreck it.

    @@video99couk Hey Colin, thanks for the advice there. I replaced all the caps in the roll-out display and lo and behold, it works !!!! Very happy about that. I still have a fishy smell somewhere, but I'll attend to that later. As for the tracking...the symptoms ease off after about a minute or two and depending on the tape, the result is quite good.I think the main cause of the problem is the age of the tapes. Some are over 20 years old. Only thing is that that as soon as a tape produces a drop out, that annoying "stereo" announcement pops up on the screen. Is there any way to turn that off?

    The EVS9000E can produce excellent pictures, so might say better than a camcorder. However: 1: The EVS9000E can now be unreliable due to capacitor failures and split reel tables, even if never used. 2: Lower serial number EVS9000E machines can put "STEREO" onto the display every time there is a tape glitch or break in recording. This can be a terrible nuisance if you are trying to digitise the material. I don't know the exact serial number this was fixed but my number 11778 has the newer firmware which does not do this. 11588 has the early firmware, so it's around there.

The picture gets noisier and noisier , until the screen goes black and the tape stops. Right before it stops I can hear some kind of tape noise(?) Not sure what is happening inside the machine. I also cant rewind because the player insist it's already at the begining. When I try to take the tape out it's stuck, but just a little. So a little jiggle back and forth always loosens the tape. Not sure I'm looking to sell it though, just because it's such a rare machine to find in perfect working order. Power supplies are usually OK to repair if it's just capacitor failure, but can be hellish if semiconductors have failed too. I'm not that crazy about ex-studio VHS/SVHS decks, often they have very high mileage. Sometimes the semi-pro machines like the Panasonic AG-4700 can give results which are at least as good, if not better, then the studio decks from JVC and Panasonic.

    My Sony CCD6000E (PAL), bought in 1991/92 was repaired iunder guarantee, then again in 2002 thought it was just video head due to being knocked. I looked at (8th March 2024) the repair receipt (Jessops) which cost me £298 and it mentioned a Capacitor Pack, so they were replaced then, never knew that was due to Capacitor Fatigue problem until the last week viewing a review of the camera. Now in March 2024 I wanted to archive and transfer my 1991-1995 Hi8 camera and edit tapes, I was wanting to compile my video work from the 1990s and 2000s and put on DVD, then more easily tranfer to my Panasonic BluRay recorder also be able to upload to KZread and maybe organise a public showing evening of my community video productions in my home city for anyone who may have appeared in them over the past two decades. Seems the camera is mostly useless now, I'd have no guarantee any repair to my CCD6000E would allow me to transfer my tapes, but it seems any Hi8 unit is likely to fail due to SMD Capacitor fatigue. So I thought get a Hi8 recording/playback deck, this one came up as it's got a TBC. Now I find this deck has not only SMD Capacitor problems but also tape transport problems too. So it doesn't sound like it's worth me spending £400 on a (PAL) version available on Ebay, if it's not fully working it'll end up failing as I transfer dozens of valuable tapes over a space of a few weeks. So what are my options then? A Digital8 system that would at least offer Firewire output that would be clearer than S-Video, is there such a Digital8 unit out there? That I'd be able to play Hi8 PCM+HiFi sound track recorded tapes on? In truth I'd have thought 3D printing would be the solution for new take up reels. Or even just using appoxy resin glueing of the cogs, Surely that'd would hold the split gear wheels together?

  • @video99couk

    @video99couk

    4 ай бұрын

    The reel tables are a complex assembly of precision magnets and mixed materials, there's no chance of 3D printing them. Epoxy might be a possibility but it's hard to get them together without a gap in the gear teeth. Most (not all) Digital8 camcorders can play analogue tapes and do a good job of it, but don't support PCM audio. There's no easy solution to that.

  • @Redskai

    Thank you for replying. I never thought I'd get a reply. I feel I have two options: What would you recommend. I've got some basic electronics knowledge, multimeter and soldering iron. But, Surface Mounted Device desoldering/resoldering requires experience and undoubtedly more specialised equipment that I've got, one slip and I'd cause irreparable damage. #1 Do I pay again (second time, third repair) to get my CCD6000E repaired (surely it'd last a year for me to transfer the tapes?) this time the SMD capacitors would probably be better than those used in 2002, that have failed before I even got around to transferring my tapes, I left it too late. I then use my CCD6000E (with in-built TBC) to transfer all my Hi8 to mini-DV tapes, then it's in the digital domain and simultaneously transfer all to DVD, Blu-Ray and back-up digitally to SSD drives. #2 Do I get one of these machines (£400 to £1000+) hope I get 2024 out of it before SMD Capacity Fatigue and/or REEL failure. Get a cheaper one and pay to get it repaired? I'm planning a big personal project this year 2024-2025 to transfer all my 1991-2000... Hi-8 video. Then edit, compile and organise an evening for all those interested in seeing a compilation of my productions here in Liverpool in the next 12 months. There would be countless people who would have been in my videos over the past thirty years. Such as bands, musicians, actors, performers, musicians, poets, community activists, tenant groups, etc, etc. I used a Canon XM2 from 2003. Does it sound like repairing the CCD6000E is the logical choice for me? It's already bought, another £300-£500 repair would be the same price I'd pay for a failing Hi8 record/play unit with or without TBC. If I don't transfer this Hi8 video at least 15+ years of camera-work will be lost. It means a lot to me and the people whose lives it impacted on, improved even. I mean I've got Super8 film from the early 1980s that are easier to view and transfer to Digital... How ironic is that! Other than us all collectively suing Sony for selling us all faulty equipment and getting compensation. So who could you recommend to get my Sony CCD6000E repaired and the 71 SMD capacitors replaced, or do I take back to Jessops for repair, if they do that anymore. From one cameraman to another, thank you... @video99couk

    I hate that deck as it is on the fifth take up hub had to replace over the years to the point stop using it years ago. That hub cracked when machine was new still under warranty. It was a design flaw, not due to age like some. That machine eat more tapes then my umbrella cockatoo did as she escape cage while at work and when though my bin I use to keep them in and decided it be a good idea to throw them down and tear a few of them apart. Funny thing is she when back into her cage at some point sitting quietly and pretended she didn’t do anything. One tape was important and had to spend some time flaring back damaged section, splicing it back together and putting in new shell to transfer it. Those flat cable are easy to rip. JVC decks are worst as the glue holding the blue stiffener always come loose and make it easy to bend connections if pushing in. Trick with those is to just push on blue stiffener and slide in firmly as it stick to the connections metal good just not the plastic insulation on the flat cable.

    Parts for this are now very hard to obtain since the last supplier in the UK went bust a few years ago. Often there's little option but to scavenge parts from scrap machines. The deck is shared with the EVS2000E which may be cheaper to find in scrap condition.

  • @Ronnie1001

    I have an EV-S1000E UK owned from new, which I modified to do insert-video by using a pair of NE555 timers to inhibit the erase head when it passes over the part of the tape beyond 180deg that stores the PCM audio, thereby not erasing the PCM stereo audio. The first NE555 controls the start of the inhibit and the second NE555 controls the length of the inhibit. Having left it on a dry shelf in the roof for well over 10 years, I recently found that it no longer worked, and that the power supply had leaked sticky fluid inside which had partially corroded some of the PCB tracks. This seemed to come from the capacitors, so I replaced them. It worked a lot better for a short while then the power supply seemed to fail completely. I wonder if there is something else wrong in the main circuits that is causing a big current drain? One annoying thing about the service manual is that it states expected voltages in hundreds of places but not any expected currents required for each board. I'm now wondering if I could just use a power supply from an old desktop PC for the 12V and 5V with a 7809 to get the 9V, but there are other weird DC and AC voltages required too for the display.

    I HATE that "Hot Fish" smell let out by capacitors! 2 of the large Fuji lenses I have for my BTS LDK-9 make the smell after being on for like 5 minutes, then the lens starts zooming on its own or the iris goes crazy. The worst of the "Fish Smell" was in an IBM AS/400 E04 form the 90's at the computer museum I work for. It was the capacitors in the power supply that started going fishy, and the smell was pumped into the room by the large fans inside the machine, YUCK! With 3D printing getting better every 3-6 months, in the near future it may be possible to reproduce the shattering plastic parts, although a 3D laser scanner would be needed to scan the parts or have an extremely good AutoCAD person. Remember anything is possible in this business, and if there is someone out there making their own Quadruplex video heads, then the sky is the limit.

    @@video99couk It would not surprise me if there is a small amount of fish oil in some electrolytes, to help keep things "moist" and prevent evaporation, being it is relatively cheap and all. For the smaller surface mount capacitors, I have been using Aluminum Organic Polymer capacitors, which have a solid electrolyte. They also work well in replacing high capacity older wet tantalum capacitors, as you can find them quite easily in 10% tolerances.
