Repairing Stamped Concrete

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A handful of small, spalled areas have showed up in our driveway after the past couple of winters, so we thought it was time to repair these areas. I talked with a person at our local provider of stamped concrete supplies and they recommended Westcoat’s Tecture Coat. It is a polymer modified Cementous underlayment intended for patching and slope work.

I was told not to expect color matching, which makes sense due to all the color variability in the driveway. I feel like it turned out well for small patches, maybe next time I would do entire tiles (stamped tile area). After the patches cured for a week a put a coat of deco guard ( www.deco-guard.com/ ) on the driveway to seal the surface and limit water penetration.

Nice job 👏. ALways satisfying doing your own work. Couple ideas: 1. Resealing the stamped concrete ( or at least the repaired blocks) could help blend the coloring better. 2. If it pops on you, try to wet the area with a sponge next time prior to applying new concrete. Exposed concrete wants to draw the moisture quickly from the new material being applied, in turn weakening the bond of the repair. Adding some water to the area first will slow that process allowing for a better bond. Great Job 👍

Resealing did help and the patches have held up through one winter so far. Thanks

Now I know what your project of the week has been. Interesting subject, nice presentation. Did you have to do a lot of surface prep in advance? I noticed that your mixing was something of a mustache problem, would more precision in measuring ingredients have helped? (Just snarking).

Thank you William. Mixing is a bit of an iterative process, I don't recommend rectangular containers ;-)

Thanks for the video. I have a color, irregular shaped stamped concrete that just started spalling. Due to color, I can't just apply a patch. How should I approach fixing this?

I have heard that some people do a full topcoat, but I have not done one yet.

That is just fine. The biggest advantage this mix has is it's ability to hold a slope.

Stamped concrete sucks. Year 2 the settling cracks start. It’s something I will never have done again.

Yes, that is the moral of the story. My repairs have held up, but I have more to do.
