Repairing A Fiat 500: Who Designed This Car??

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Wow this car was poorly designed. My friend broke down in his fiat 500. I go tow him back to my property and repair it. It needed a new alternator and serpentine belt.

I've never found Fiat to have reliability issues any more than any other mass car manufacturer and the design flaws are probably down to space limitations rather than any intentional bad design.

I have a 2012 Fiat 500 which I have owned since new. It is my main daily driver. Mine has 61k miles on it and so far has been very reliable. In terms of space efficiency, I would say it is a well designed car. But as a result, stuff is crammed in it a little bit tight. I recently replaced the cabin air filter and being a contortionist would have helped! Every car has its quirks - and if the alternator ever goes out on mine I am paying someone else to repair it!

Exactly. It´s a small car with front wheel drive. Obviously some pickup will have more room, because of the size. But you won´t find a big enough parking space anywhere in Italy for a Chevy pickup. Also for many cars like Nissans with V6 and FWD this one ha even decent space. At least you don´t have to disconnect the drive shaft and tilt the engine like on some Peugeot´s.

Yeah, you're right. The alternator is really very awkward to remove. I have 11 years experience working at a Fiat garage and over 40 years in the trade. Seizure of the alternator was a common fault on on "Punto 199" models caused by water ingress due to rain water running down the bulkhead/firewall and onto the alternator. Fixed by the factory by modification of the bulkhead/firewall drains or recall modifications. It's not too common a fault on the 500, but not unheard of. I have to say it's much easier on a 2 post ramp and your "pit" looks like a death trap. Do yourself a favour, fill it in and invest in taller axle stands and a crawler board. It just looks like you've dug your own grave. Really unsafe. Now I appreciate you're helping out a friend but it's your life that's at risk. Remember accidents happen when you least expect them and it doesn't look like there is anyone around to help you if the wall of your "dirt" pit was to collapse. Nice to see an armature "have a go" at what really isn't that hard a job. Good video though. 👍

I've been working as a mechanic in fiat dealership in Europe, the 500 is really reliable, alternators were the only thing that caused problems, but it's an issue to all fiats from 90s to this day, it's because water gets between metal plates that make alternator core, the plates rust and expand so the alternator cracks and stop spinning. It's also not a 5h job, we took this out in less than half an hour.

I have a rule for when either buying a car for myself or helping a friend do so: take a wratchet wrench with an extension with you for the test drive. If you can reach around the engine and have the end of either the wrench or the extension easily reach bolts and all other issues considered, go for it. Even if it has a great warranty as you're going to be doing something to it yourself at some point, take into account how easy it is to work on before you get it. So many other things about a car's design are revealed by how well laid out its various components are in the engine bay as that design ethos bleeds into everything else. Hey, from New Hampster.

Valves and Timing and some sundries. That was it! A mate of mine had at the same time, a 70's-something Fiat 128. He 'tried' to replace the Alternator. Gave up after 3 days. Got the Agents to do it and obviously, they could all go on a World Cruise thereafter. Another guy I knew had a little Mini 1000 (the one before the Clubman). He was an Apprentice Motor Mechanic at the local Mercedes Garage and whenever he had to do some work on his Mini (CV Joints, etc), he would invite a group of us around to the Workshop after hours .. supply the Beers and the Dart Board and after having disconnected the necessary, we would lift the entire body off the Sub-Frame and Engine, leaving him with a clear field from all directions. Repairs done, reverse the procedure .. all go home. Fiats .. Naah ..

First power steering died, then abs, lights, but engine kept running for 30 minutes. I went to the shop in first town. Mechanic evacuated AC lines, removed AC compressor and had access to alternator from the top, repaired the alternator and put it back. Whole thing lasted 35 minutes. He said he could do it from below, but this way is much quicker and easier. And what do you expect. 500 is small car, parts are designed to fit in small space.

It's great to see repair videos like this. Good stuff to see about specific issues, like how tight the alternator access is.. My two cents: wear safety glasses, try not to work alone (especially under a car on dirt!) and chock the wheels when using ramps. I want you to be around for a long time to keep making car videos! That engine was originally designed in the 80s and the alternator was easy to get to as there was hardly anything around it, but as manifolds have grown due to emissions regs, subframes got bigger for more strength and A/C added not to mention a16 valve head it just became harder to work on. I always just disconnect the engine mount and lever the engine forward when doing these, easier on a 2 post though!

Hi, I just found your videos two days ago, and this is only the second video of yours I have seen and holy crap did this take me back to my young adult days growing up in upstate NY near the Vermont border. I havent seen a dirt service pit dug in the ground for a long time! On the property I lived on we had two big iron I beams buried into the side of a small hill supported with big chunks of wood and extended out about 4 or 5 ft. And you'd drive half your car on them and work under it lol. Totally normal! Now I live down state and I'm pretty sure you'd be fined out of existence if caught doing anything like your pit or the ramps. I like your style, thank you for your videos! I cant wait to watch many more!

My Fiesta has got almost 100.000 kilometers, and apart from the regular oil changes and regular services and checkups (everything done at the repair shop for an average of less than a hundred euros), it never had any problems. And it's not considered a particularly reliable car, just an average one.

That subframe has quite a lot of surface rust for a 2012 car. But I can imagine conditions are a lot tougher than sunny Italy where it originates from. These 500's are quite common where I live (the Netherlands). In general small economical cars are very popular here, for instance the Citroen C1, Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio, and so on. I've worked on a variety of cars ( mostly transmission jobs) and I absolutely prefer American cars to work on. Especially the large trucks (Dodge, Chevrolet, ..) are not complicated and easy to work on. Dream job compared to that ghastly CVT I had to remove from a Nissan Micra....

I used to own 89 Formula 350 some 15 years ago. When the heater core started to leak I heard plenty of horror stories about changing it, you need to get the dash off, then move the center console back etc to have room for this one bolt on the heater core cover. Since I'm dumb, and had plenty of beer, decided to do it myself. Not too bad. When I was checking out the "difficult"bolt I noticed that the cover didn't even have a hole for it so it wasn't there...I guess GM noticed that issue at some point mid 80s or so and simplified the design...Still had to lift the dash a bit for some bolts but not bad at all. Except the hangover next day.

It looks to me that the root of the problem is that the car was designed with a manual gearbox, not with the automatic one which has been added later in order to sell it in the USA, removing the alternator with the manual gearbox (which is smaller, or at least it is less bothersome when servicing the car) is much easier..when you take a small car with tiny space under the bonnet and you add something it wasn't designed for (in italy/Europe, automatic gearboxes on small cars are only used by disabled people..) that's the result..
