Repairing a BIG Mining Truck Cylinder Barrel | Part 1 | Machining & Welding

Ғылым және технология

We've got a cylinder barrel in to repair off a BIG Mining Haul truck! This is the hoist cylinder barrel off a Caterpillar 789 Mining haul truck and the inside has been damaged. In this part 1 video we show the step by step process of disassembling the damaged cylinder barrel and start machining up the new barrel. First is machining off the barrel end and head flange. We then start machining up the new cylinder barrel by turning down one end to fit the head flange. The head flange is then installed with an interference fit before dual shield welding the head flange onto the new barrel. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we finish machining, honing and welding the new barrel!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

They have to be. If they were cast in one piece, a machine such as that (the dump truck) wouldn't cost ~3mill, but 5 or more. Gotta save costs where you can with these because otherwise, nobody would buy them. There's also benefits in the strength of the finite item, giving each component the best metal to exist with. Kinda like car rear axles. They're also made from cast components and either extruded (commonly known as non-seam tubing) or welded tubes. There's also the considerations of the manufacturer's cost for casting a component as large, in the required quantities to sustain the industry. They'd have to cast 20 of these every few weeks (if not more) to have enough to pass around the globe... they'd be throwing money out of the house. There's many, many reasons behind it. :)

Just realized that approx 1 year ago Kurtis did a similar repair for a barrel on a 785 dump truck. Karen, don’t know if you even realized this but you did an incredible job on both of these videos. The overall length of the two videos is within 15 seconds of each other. Also, you were within 5 seconds at the point that Kurtis got the eye end to pop off the cylinder. Pretty amazing the consistency of both of you in your work. 😂

When I was younger I wanted to be a machinist... I certainly don't have the patience for the perfection required to properly do any real machine work, the closest I ever got to a metal Lanes was turning brake discs and drums.. But I still truly enjoy watching your videos. As always, thank you for posting!

Personnel pride, if you wouldn't accept the finished product . Don't expect others to be happy with " good enough" . Keep learning everyday, and ask questions to the older better machinist around you. You can do anything you set your mind to do. Just keep believing in yourself good luck and God bless my friend

Kurtis, is it necessary to machine down the OD of the barrel? Obviously the ends need to marry up with the flange etc., but can you not leave the rest?

Karen, you are the gold standard when it comes to filming and editing « how to » type videos. The various angles, the sped-up parts, the occasional slow motion sequences, the close-ups, everything is so on point, you almost forget about it, which ironically is a good thing. Never do we say « oh, I wish this was filmed differently ». Great, great job. You outdid yourself on this one. Homie’s back mounted GoPro was awesome!

You are very methodical and very knowledgeable in your trade. Watching you do your work and watch the machining and welding is almost THERAPUTIC. And your videographer is fantastic!!!

They say that we are part of a computer simulation. After the last video I thought wouldn‘t it be nice if Kurtis would show the crane and the extend of the reach that seems to span the whole shop area. And here it comes? And I just thought it, didn‘t even speak it out loud for Siri to hear! If I have any other questions I‘ll just think of them harder in the future. Thanks for the immediate reaction.

A dog at our house this week just lost her squeaky chicken in the bush, so methinks a visit to get a few more and I'm going to send one homey's way for a belated birthday present. Yous are a great team. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

This channel can teach people things that you won't learn from a book or in a classroom. Kurits is showing how to in real time problem solve on the fly to get the work figured out and done right. Dude knows what he's doing and doesn't have to over-dramatize anything, just solid get in and get it done. Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, Karen...you're skills are improving as a videographer and editor, seriously you are getting damn good and I see it with each and every video you two produce.

Mate, that HFM @ 2:13 you welded on, has to be nearly worth A$50. Just a backyard swarf maker, and steel is bloody expensive now. Years ago, when the Monetary Standard was in the process of being sorted out, they tossed up between Gold and Aluminium. Steel has gone up more than Gold, this last few years. Nice Job, Kurtis.

Steel is stupid expensive. Both cost of material and shipping has doubled or more in recent years.

  • @aserta

    @aserta

@@KennyEaton603 Yeah, but that's on account of the muscovians destroying one of the biggest steel plants in Europe in their lunatic bid to destroy Ukraine. Then there's the sanctions they got hit with as well, basically it's artificial in nature, not because suddenly steel is a highly sought after commodity or rare item. There's plenty to go around, just not from the sources that made it a stable item. Until production makes a workaround in other countries that will inevitably step up to the plate (like various other Asian, Middle Eastern or African nations taking over Chinese manufacturing to remove China's monopoly) the price will be high. Hey, at least it's not like with copper, where they all rallied to make the cost obscenely high on purpose... making everyone with a neuron, wonder exactly what did we learn, if anything, from the last time we had this happen(read up on Yasuo Hamanaka). There's enough copper around to construct an entire city of copper, and i'm not even talking about copper in use, or copper in junk yards. Copper in ingot, being kept off the market like diamonds. Don't you just love this world we live in? 🤣
