Repairing a BIG Mining Truck Cylinder Barrel | Part 1 | Machining & Welding
Ғылым және технология
We've got a cylinder barrel in to repair off a BIG Mining Haul truck! This is the hoist cylinder barrel off a Caterpillar 789 Mining haul truck and the inside has been damaged. In this part 1 video we show the step by step process of disassembling the damaged cylinder barrel and start machining up the new barrel. First is machining off the barrel end and head flange. We then start machining up the new cylinder barrel by turning down one end to fit the head flange. The head flange is then installed with an interference fit before dual shield welding the head flange onto the new barrel. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we finish machining, honing and welding the new barrel!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

These are signs that you're on the right track. Congratulations on being the absolute legends that you truly are... from here on the West Coast of the US at midnight. Because the barrel is ruined to the point that re-honing would thin the walls too much, but the ends are still useable, and that much professionally shaped metal is expensive.@@karlwithak.

I have been running lathes off and on since 1964 and I can certainly say that the lathe in this video is the crown jewel of all of them. And you Sir, set the standard for all YT machinists. This is not flattery, it is an educated observation from an old man that is a prick. Art from Ohio
I work in a factory in the US that makes those exact same cylinders, I just started watching your vids about a week ago, wild to see one in your shop. It's really amazing to see 1 man doing the whole process - subbing for part 2

Hello, Kurtis, Karen and Homeless, my wife watches the videos too and she said you had a new lathe. I looked and told her nope same one you had. As we watched I commented on how the ends had to be removed she said it was easy with good equipment. I told her no, craftsmanship was the key. A good man or woman knowledgeable with marginal tools is still better than a jury rigger with the best tools.
For fugg sake dude, I’ve never thought one man can handle so big parts repairs. It’s so interesting to watch!

Hey mate that's really awesome, all the best with your journey!
I have no training in your field of expertise, none at all. However, the way that you explain where the part fits, how it functions, what possibly caused the damage and the steps and procedures to repair enables me to follow with understanding. This is, ‘so good’.
hello, 1 month into the apprenticeship, its going well. i worked on something very similar to this today. prep for NDT and cleaning a few. love the content keep it up.
As soon as you said it was an un-honed barrel I got excited, I love watching the honing process. Will have to wait till next week though.
The confidence in your ability you must have to be able to cut a piece of equipment up like that is inspiring
Karen, you are the gold standard when it comes to filming and editing « how to » type videos. The various angles, the sped-up parts, the occasional slow motion sequences, the close-ups, everything is so on point, you almost forget about it, which ironically is a good thing. Never do we say « oh, I wish this was filmed differently ». Great, great job. You outdid yourself on this one. Homie’s back mounted GoPro was awesome!
Great video, and as always, the "go pro pooch" doesn't disappoint! He must give those cameras a real workout. After the last video I thought wouldn‘t it be nice if Kurtis would show the crane and the extend of the reach that seems to span the whole shop area. And here it comes? And I just thought it, didn‘t even speak it out loud for Siri to hear! If I have any other questions I‘ll just think of them harder in the future. Thanks for the immediate reaction.
Great customer service, hope they realise your quality of work. Great camera and direction Karen 👌 Thanks for sharing
That cylinder looks small on the truck, huge by itself. Just shows how big the 789 really is. Love you're show!

Cheers Karen and Kurtis. Hope homey has had a great birthday week. A dog at our house this week just lost her squeaky chicken in the bush, so methinks a visit to get a few more and I'm going to send one homey's way for a belated birthday present. Yous are a great team. Hope you have a lovely weekend.
When I was younger I wanted to be a machinist... I certainly don't have the patience for the perfection required to properly do any real machine work, the closest I ever got to a metal Lanes was turning brake discs and drums.. But I still truly enjoy watching your videos. As always, thank you for posting!
I really enjoyed the clock during the welding! It was great to see the time pass during the parts that were fast forwarded
Kurtis, you're welds are like butter! Just so perfectly even and smooth.

Timing of your uploads is just perfect for me in Europe. When I come to work it's always ready to watch. Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, Karen...you're skills are improving as a videographer and editor, seriously you are getting damn good and I see it with each and every video you two produce.

@aserta
10 ай бұрын
They have to be. If they were cast in one piece, a machine such as that (the dump truck) wouldn't cost ~3mill, but 5 or more. Gotta save costs where you can with these because otherwise, nobody would buy them. There's also benefits in the strength of the finite item, giving each component the best metal to exist with. Kinda like car rear axles. They're also made from cast components and either extruded (commonly known as non-seam tubing) or welded tubes. There's also the considerations of the manufacturer's cost for casting a component as large, in the required quantities to sustain the industry. They'd have to cast 20 of these every few weeks (if not more) to have enough to pass around the globe... they'd be throwing money out of the house. There's many, many reasons behind it. :)
