Repair a jammed Nikon zoom lens
Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm lens.
The issue was the zoom was stuck on the 55mm setting, it turned out the metal rails had bent due to the fall impact on the edge of lens. I was verrry lucky not to have a cracked lens or screen!!

Great video Shanen. Your attention to detail and clear commentary really helped me fix my lens. One thing that did happen in my lens was that the two little plastic "dots" that help line up the metal rings were broken and fell out when I took out the rings. I lined them up by using the ends of toothpicks (cut to about a half inch +/_) and was able to get the collar to slip over the toothpicks. I took one out and put in the screw and repeated this for all three screws. Thanks again.
Thank you for the excellent demonstration for fixing my Nikon 18-55mm lens. I followed your steps and now have my lens working just fine.

FLUX TV glad I could help!
Just home from a holiday in Cyprus, where my 10 year old daughter slipped while holding the camera and the lens hit the ground, I thought it was going to be a new lens but your video showed me all I needed to know (exactly the same symptoms) and the lens is fixed! Thanks for making the video, great stuff.

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to re-enact or re-construct your original repair job just to show it to help your fellow photographers. Very appreciated.!! It is so helpful and it gives me some confidence that it can be done by myself and I am going to try it out. I have the exact same lens (only serial number is different), so this video is perfect for me, and I have the exact same problem (and same reason as yours😀, just in a different geo location). And, though its your first video, you have very cleared detailed everything and the steps that a person needs to know while doing such a repair for the first-time. 🙏
Had this issue two days ago and succeeded to fix, thanks to you!

Thank you so much used this and Stephen Villagrasa's video to help me fix a dropped Nikon lens!
Yeah I just had this issue and instead of dealing with it in a sensitive manner, I handed it to someone who said ""they knew what they were doing" and then went and switched the mode to autofocus and then forced the barrel to extend and retract and it broke a part of the autofocus mechanism on the inside, which apparently helps to hold some things in there together. I've been searching for days for a used replacement lens...
Thank you so much for this! Saved my lens! I really thought I had to buy a new one.

Ace Trainer J I’m a noob too constantly learning hehe! If your talking about the piece at about 3:50 I just had a look online and it’s called a bayonet Mount ring. Here’s a link to what I think you mean (you should be able to find the assembly somewhere online for sale) I don’t think this part on eBay is the right one for the 18-55mm lens it’s more for reference to the assembly your talking about so you’ll have to dig around on the internet for it and check the images. m.ebay.ie/itm/Original-Bayonet-Ring-Barrel-Lever-Repair-for-Nikon-55-200mm-VR-Lens-Camera/262678073344?hash=item3d28d55000:g:-uMAAOSwlptaFTV9 Hope this helps! One trick I use on my dirtbikes, and now my camera lens.... For a screw that won't budge, try tightening it first, then loosen. Works like a charm for me nearly every time.
I have a lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II MADE IN THAILAND It locked the focus, it doesn’t rotate either manually or automatically you have some video how to disassemble this lens. I see several but not and with this ending 3.5-5.6GII I thank

Hi, is this the same for a 18-55 VR ? (the first one). Thanks.
on 16:53 how do you attach the wire and the thing you screwed on ?
Thanks from ploand
can i do this to my nikkor af-s 18mm-55mm?
Hi do you have a recommended UK repair company. I'm looking to get a 35mm D lens that intermittently doesn't AF - it's like a contact has gone or something similar.

Mark Shirley it may be your cable is damaged (white cable shown on this video). Mine broke off from the connector pin, if it is the same as that then you should check out my other video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6p9tpd_c8nVd84.html It shows you how to remove the connector pin from the bayonet ring, but then you’ll need to resolder the white wire back onto the connector pin.
What about solder the wire ? Thanks . J C
Hello Sir.. i have the same lense i bought last day cuz i thought it will fit to my Olympus E-PL3.. and im thinking to buy a converter but dont know what is the type i will buy. Can you Help me for this??
Do you know where I can get a replacement part of those metal rails? Turns out the rail on my 55-300 is completely broken and surprisingly nothing else is cracked or broken.. just that piece. :/

I'm dealing with this same issue. Except, after I double check that they're straight, and I test it out, it will smoothly zoom from 18-55 a couple times then start to get harder and harder until I can only zoom up to 45 without forcing it. Any idea what could be causing this?
@SSIcely

Hey Andrew, hmm I think it would still be 1 or 2 of your rails that are still not fully vertical or right angle from where the bend surface at the top of the rail (where the screws go through) meets the long shaft section. The rails will be stopping the lens sub-assembly (7:00) from moving up and down freely inside. All I can recommend is you continue shaping it until its as flat as possible and make sure you have a good reference for making sure they are flat too. Hope this helps!
I have same issue (jammed zoom) following your tutorial got the rails out but internal lens group won't come out yours seemed to just fall out mine seems stuck...how do you get the internal lens out?
@harryberry474
5 жыл бұрын
Got it out, the internal lens group tab wasn't in it's slot I used screw driver to pry it back into slot then was able to remove lens group. It's my daughters lens and she said camera/lens was on tripod and cat must have knocked it over...or her 2 yr old haha. The rails weren't bent it was that part of lens that fits into slot that had popped out of channel. So I guess there's more than one issue that can cause the lens to jam. The rails were fine. Lens is a bit sticky now though but it works good enough. Cheap lens though almost all plastic. If it wasn't for your video I never would have attempted this, THANK YOU for posting this.

Ah good! Glad you managed to sort it out Harry! Yeah it's all reliant on the metal rails that are like 2mm thick. When you get a bent rail it can be quite a pain to adjust to make sure theres a smooth operation, so I'm glad its not the case for you.
Hi, i tried fixing my lens the way u demonstrated.. But unfortunately it didnt work.... Theres something i noticed that was different for me, when i opened it up, the lens was in 2 peices instead of one like yours.. There was a plastice peice that rides on to the lens. I screwed it back on and it seemed like it would work but when i put it all together the lens was still stuck. What do you think i can do.. Is there still hope that it can be fixed?

Hi Marwa, what is the lens model name you have? The one I fix in the video is a AF-S DX 18-55mm lens. And the two rail pieces inside are made of metal (steel)
Hi. Does DSLR camera have any power sugre protection inside the body? I am just curious. For example, let's say I bought a new lens to my DSLR, but with damaged electronics. I put it to the body and .... the camera is damaged. It is possible?
@SSIcely
4 жыл бұрын
Hide Mac Seen as power is supplied from the camera body to the lens, it shouldn’t effect the camera. If the lens isn’t working electrically, you just won’t be able to use the f-stop automatically to get the focus you need among other electronic features in the lens.

Help?! I'm having the exact same problem but after taking everything apart. The lens won't slide out! It's completely stuck. Without the guide bars the lens moves the full range but obviously has no Focus. No up down motion. I wish I just had the money to get it fixed but I'm generally really good at these things.
@SSIcely
2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's the guide bars, they need to be completely 90 degrees from the mounting point so that the lens can slide properly. Take them out and keep bending till they are straight, make sure to use an object that has completely flat sides as reference to check how close you are to getting the guide bars to being straight.
Nice video. But I dropped my camera about one foot. On carpet. No way that bent those rods, which are about 1/8th inch steel. And when I took apart another similar, functional lens, the rails in that camera were also angled. Personally, I think taking the lens apart and putting it back together fixed the problem. Just my opinion.
How many cost ??
Hi dear, good video. My issue is focus ring struck. My cam now wrkg only in M mode. Manual focussing also not poosble due to struck issue. Gets blurred image only with this lense.

Hi amber bullis, from what I believe the white wire connects to the lens f-stop (focus). I managed to sever this cable from the metal connection altogether but fixed it by soldering back together. You have to strip the wire back a little to expose the metal wires then solder to the metal piece. I can make a video on how to solder it if you need?

@@SSIcely I took it to a computer repair guy that I know and he soldered it. But I guess I must have put the lens back together wrong. 🤷♀️Now it's stuck on my camera. Had 3 different versions of this lens but they all broke. Build quality is a joke. My trusty 18-70 still does the job.
I am DONE with NIKON. This is my SECOND NIKON. First one paid 2000 and right away error message random on 18-55 mm or 55-70 whatever lens. Piece of crap. Gave it another chance. Now a NIKON D3400 and the 18-55 mm lens is locked up. (Google it, big problem continual with many on the lenses this one more so.) And big money to repair it? They freeze out the affordable local guy? I AM GOING to CANNON next camera. MY LENS has a ribbon that cannot get it (short length ) apart or figure the release. Taking a hammer to it and mailing to the CEO. (I take care they not be able to refurbish and sell back to anyone. MADE in F"N "THAILAND" explains much. Like all other over priced short-lived electronic crap
