Totally understand. My daughter chided me when I bought a ticket to an event for myself then felt bad about it. She told me I do so much for everyone else, I need to spend some of that love on myself. Admittedly, I still felt bad and was going to go back and buy two more tickets, but it had sold out. Now, since the choice was taken away, I'm actually loving the idea of making it a whole day for self love. Possibly even an overnight so I don't have to drive home late two hours after. It's so easy to get caught up in the idea that the advice you would give to other people you seldom keep for yourself. ANd I know better, I shouldn't have to have an excuse to do it. It's not selfish, which is what the previous generations taught me.

I used to feel guilty all the time. Now it’s much better (though not perfect. Haha) One of the things I tell myself when I feel guilty is I’m allowed to take up space. Another is I’m allowed (or responsible for taking) to take the best care possible of myself. It sucks that the world didn’t give us these messages growing up. Thanks for sharing your drawers with us. I love seeing other artists art supplies!

Fran, te entiendo perfectamente a lo que te referís con un lugar para "echarte". Hay veces que lo único que querés hacer es eso... echarte. No dejes que nadie te diga que está mal o que sos perezosa....la mayoría de la gente no lo entiende. Algo que me ayuda y que podría ayudarte es deshacerte de la mayor cantidad de cosas que no uses...ya vi que algunas cosas las pusiste en storage....pero siguen estando ahí. A mí deshacerme de lo que ya no uso me libera un peso enorme de la mente y me hace pensar con más claridad. Besotes! Andrea

I feel you about the second-guessing the expensive purchases. In my case it does not come from a "i don't deserve it" position, rather from a "you could have not done it, you could have keep on living without it, because if now something happens, you already spent some (too much) money".

in my first studio that i rented from someone else it was in the basement and has concrete floors. my depression manifested as extreme tiredness. so i would lay on the concrete floor for hours. finally in a fit of guilt, i laid some fabric underneath me and started to trace myself. i did many paintings this way...now i'm an old woman and i have never made so much art in my life...things work out this way!

I used to feel really guilty about buying things because I hardly had any money and I would get mad at myself when I was short on cash for bills. I started saving money and spending money wisely on groceries and paying off my high interest loans. Now I buy what I want and I don’t feel guilty about anything. I recently bought a Tesla and I’m almost done paying it off. A few years ago I could barely get $2,000 rounded up for a used car. I was very pathetic with money and I felt bad constantly.

I 100% relate to that feeling of financial guilt, especially over larger purchases. Something that has helped me massively is to view money more as a tool than anything. Although it's easy to feel the pressure to always be saving money, that's not the goal...the purpose of the money is to help you progress. A couch sounds like the perfect addition to your studio, an investment into your mental health and physical health.

Yes, I feel massive guilt when making big purchases as well. A few months ago I bought a new couch and felt really guilty for a while even though the one it replaced was already one we got second hand, almost for free and we had it so long that it had holes in it 🥲 But I tried to convince myself it was okay because it is what my family spends most of our time in and I just got promoted and revived a significant bonus … I get what you mean completely … I don’t feel I deserve nice things. Even though in the end it’s a necessity…
