No, that's the problem -- she's an amazing girlfriend to men and women. She's just -- Maureen loves everyone. *Everyone*. There are no "former" lovers to her -- Mark is simply not her current lover, and Joanne is. She simply, literally cannot understand the concept of limiting her affections to a single person. Even her lies are only there because she understands that her current lover will be hurt when she finds her next current lover, and she wants to avoid hurting them as long as possible. Maureen makes you feel special and unique because, to her, you _are_ special and unique -- but to Maureen, _everyone_ is special and unique.

This is my favorite number in the whole musical. I love that it's a watershed moment for Mark but for Joanne it's a cold realization about just what she's gotten herself into.

Mark saying, "I feel great," it's the realization that all Maureen's drama and heartbreak is officially not his problem anymore. And Joanne saying, "I feel lousy," like it's just occurring to her. It's like, "Congratulations Joanne, you've got Maureen and all the baggage that comes with her. If you want to see that as winning, that's up to you."

“You should try it. In heels.” This whole song is so classic.

The way he say's 'fucknig' makes me smile every time😂

Tracie’s facial expression on the “she can be so obscene” line is my favourite part of this whole number 🤣

No I searched it because I saw it years ago and it’s fantastic ☺️

I remember when I was like fourteen and watching this musical for the first or fouth time, I was really confused why they wanted Maureen at all. Like, just from this song, she seems like someone that gives you more heartache than what's worth. They literally compared the feeling of being with her to 'feeling like drinking gasoline'. At the time I thought, I guess they love her, nothing to do. But now I just wish they became friends and dumped her.

I always interpreted it as them loving Maureen's good side too much to let her go and it's kind of like "I'd do anything for her no matter what" which is a really toxic concept of love

2:43 I learned to tango as a middle schooler but was super short and was substituted into the “follower” position often so that line hits hard for me.

During "The Tango Maureen", the eyebrow lift and jacket toss were added because the actors were having fun during rehearsals and the director Chris Columbus liked it. After "The Tango Maureen", when Joanne is talking to Maureen on the phone, the TV screen behind Tracie Thoms showed reflections of the crew. All those shots had to be sent to ILM to remove the reflections.

Also Marks Head "come here" movement is the famous "Wanna Dance" signal for Tango in Argentina during a Milonga (Tango Party) men use that movement across the room to ask a lady to dance without using words since usually the music is meant to sound without the voices of people dancing/talking

I stumbled across this movie when I was like 12 and I happened to catch angels death and i cried so hard not even knowing what it was and I'm 25 and my love of musicals is all thanks to this movie

this musical is just SOOOOO NEW YORK lol

My only complaint: I wish they'd put Joanne in a hot suit rather than a dress for the fantasy sequence.

She would have to fit the rest crew at the dame part they're having, so I guess that's why (& most tango dangers are realllly strict about this dance stereotypes -at least where I come from); plus, that's just a fantasy of Mark, & in his eyes she's 'just a girl', at this point. I totally get what you say, though, & agree that this would fit the character way better:)

Ok, so a couple of days ago, my friend showed me this song, and Take Me or Leave Me, and before I watched it, he told me about the movie, like how Maureen was bi, and her girlfriend was a lesbian. He also told me that Elsa's voice actor was in the movie, and that she acted as Maureen. At first, I kinda didn't believe it, until I heard Maureen sing in Take Me or Leave Me, then I was like, "Holy fucking shit, they share the same voice actor!"

This is the only time when it becomes an actual movie.

I'm two months away from an associates degree at 41 years old but realizing I should have pursued theater arts. fuck. life moves too fast.

This one time I was simping hard foe my ex and worked with her new girlfriend on my ex's art thing while venting to her about how toxic that ex is. Then we went to her performance art piece about how put out SHE is by gentrification, as an artist, not acknowledging the dozens homeless people profoundly and disastrously affected by the upcoming sweep of "her performance space." Then my ex and her girlfriend joined the friend group at a diner where our buddy's new girlfriend bragged about killing a dog. It's not like the new gf had anything more important going on, she was just representing survivors of sexual assault in court as a lawyer. The older I get, the more I view everyone but Joanne as a villain.

Imagine how right it would have been if Mark shrugged at that point and just briefly tango’d with the guy. Oh well, even Rent wasn’t there yet.
