They do it all the time in France. We bought a house like this in France. And it had nothing underneath. When we bought it we put insulation and a dry wall ceiling in to get rid of the noise of walking in the rooms above. But no, they don't put anything under the floorboards.

Look, you are in a different country and maybe a more modern property? France is France. This is how they do it in parts of France. As I said, I put insulation then drywall underneath to make a ceiling in our home that had these type of floors. It eliminated all the dust and the noise. But some French like it that way. In some very old French houses, they have the floorboards with a thick layer of dirt and then a layer of tomet, which are a type of terracotta type of tile.tile. The dirt acts as an insulation as well as a bed for the tomet. But all this is very heavy and not good for supporting beams over the years. They then make a ceiling below. The world's a big place. And all countries are different. I think Ed intends to make a ceiling like I did anyway. Then you have no noise or dust. Happy days! 😊

I've been a custom building contractor for years and have installed floor decking directly over beams just as done by Ed. We built a custom timberframe home on an island nearby that passed all the inspections. The client was an engineer from General Dynamics. The architect called for 2" thick floor decking, tongue and groove clear Douglas Fir, no sub floor. Underside was exposed as the ceiling of the dinning area below. The planks were carpeted over on top side, finished on the underside. The major difference though would be the thickness and length of the planks. This is also done in custom builds for roofs w/ exposed plank cielings. A flooring contractor wouldn't do this work in the US, it would be the General contractor, as this is part of the frame of the structure. Best, Brian

In the USA 🇺🇸 many state and local regulations now require a subfloor and often due to higher increasing costs of heating a home more builders and homeowners are requesting and or automatically installing not only sub floor but as well insulation, which is Fabulous.

My house is well over 100 yrs. old, and hardwood throughout; no issues with squeaking etc. Back in those days, craftsmanship was good, and the wood was properly acclimated prior to installation. In todays construction a lot of hardwood is imported from China, no offense but they don't have the strict quality control, and so it's dense with moisture. People erroneously install it immediately, with out properly acclimating it to suit the environment. It should be in the house for a few days, however cheap chinawood often needs 3 months to finally have all that moisture dissipated. Not doing so leaves large gaps a year, two years later because it has shrunk. This is likely decent quality parquet.

I'm surprised you're not putting down a subfloor even though your joists are thick. You need an electric nailing gun to help you Edd. Well, Louie, I know your business is going to be very successful and I think Edd and Anna should video your progress. In the meantime, we all love you and the hard work you are doing now. It must be a challenge getting everything ready while doing this with Edd,

I started watching your channel when you bought the house and only had a quick showaround. If you are already at the flooring step, then not just you'll finish until May, but Louis even will rent the place for his shop. :D You're super fast!

This is going to be so beautiful! Louie is a great helper. You are lucky to have him. So glad you all are helping Louie out with his shop too. Wish him great success, but you all will miss him. The building front is so sad ... can't wait to see what your plan is for it! Here in the US we put down a subfloor before the wood flooring. lol Louie is the best, no problem from him.... lol lol

This is getting really interesting; I have never seen parquet laid. Hope you are going to leave those beautiful brick walls exposed. That would be quite unique.

Wonderful job, guys! I didn't know you don't put down a subfloor for a wooden plank floor in France. I've never seen that before in the US.

Hi, the parquet planks as single layer will move by drying and load and will open gaps consequently. You need a sublayer out of Plywood (OSB) or other load able planks. Independent the fire protection code in France must be reflected. Good luck.

It will be very nice. I did 2 rooms at our château but in the Swedish way. First a wodden floor on the beams and then the parquet on it, then you have endless possibilities of different patterns to lay

Edd! Here in New Jersey our flooring seems to be very different from there in France. Over the beams we put subflooring, usually plywood sheets, over which we lay the wooden flooring, what you call parquet. Any insulation would be fitted between the beams. Our wooden floors are usually oak or maple. Chestnut wood was used in the past as well, but between over use and a kind of disease, chestnut is rare now. All of this is fascinating!

Compriband tape works well around the periphery of a wooden floor. Also fantastic around the windows when you install them. Great job; beautiful flooring. Thanks for the vlog, as always, a joy. (ps a lovely bit of rump too 🤣😂 Thanks Anna)
