Renovating A 100 Year Old House | One Twenty Main Episode 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Join Jaime, Brett, and the Perkins crew and follow along as they finish renovating a 100-year-old house on Main Street in Bryson City North Carolina... 120 Main Street.
We are picking up in the middle of this project, with the commercial storefront already finished over the last year.
This is a very interesting structure, with 140-year-old house that has a brick storefront that was built off of the front to the sidewalk on Main Street. Brett and Jaime decided to keep both portions of the building and make it a multi purpose property, even though it is very interesting looking.
The back part of the property will be turned into a short term rental and will be remodeled using local and re-purposed materials! Jaime and Brett have some cool tricks to make this property look awesome for a very small budget.

For anyone who has never done construction, I just want to say, I have never had more FUN than when I helped my brothers-in-law build houses in San Diego in the late 80's for about 18 mos. when I was out of work. I learned many skills which I now use today as a home owner trying to fix up the old farm house that we now live in in Ohio. These guys are helping me figure out how to solve some of my problems on that house. Love these videos!

Boy the block next to the ladder would have saved me. Broke my back 2 years ago falling off a roof. Gotta say it’s not falling that hurts. It’s the sudden stop at the bottom.

As someone who lives in a brand new house (we are renting) where nothing was done right, I would have really appreciated if the original workers had at least a little bit of skill. Every single door was installed incorrectly. while they opened and close, there were some huge gaps on the back and front doors, the door trim was extremely crooked on them, to the point where they couldn't even be correctly fixed. The second story floor is so bad that when you walk in the master bedroom furniture along the walls moves. The floor is about as lumpy as the back lawn. The painters don't know the first thing about painting, the repairs were done so poorly in some parts that they had to be redone more than once. If I owned this house, I would raise hell, but the owners bought it as a rental, so I don't think they care that much about the "smaller details". I am hoping to buy my own fixer upper in the next few years.

I appreciate you making comments like "hanging it in the center of the building sounds easy but it is more difficult than you may think" and "Jamie is taking extra time to think about the layout because he doesn't hang signs everyday." This is helpful because I think when doing a project, something may sound easy, but it's not always as it sounds. And the very thought "this should be easy" or "this shouldn't take that long" puts added pressure on me (us) and can cause me to rush through it rather than slowing down and taking inventory before doing something. Thanks for your honesty! - Ryan Mandala

Drip edge.. On my current project I noticed the 1x2 (fur strips) under the flashing was most effective. On the original part of the house they replaced the 1x4 trims (rotted) with 1x4.. first time it rained.. I could watch the water connect from the drip edge to the 1x4 to the roof frame. The side with the 1x2.. this doesnt happen. Probably going to try yank the 1x4 out. Just food for thought.
