    Hey Garry, thanks for the comment and kind words. The Renogy inverter (none charger) is also centre-tapped. The AC output is similar to what's explained in the video. I have a detailed wiring diagram to show how to wire an RCD to the inverter. It will be available on the website this week. I'll keep you updated. As a layman I will be copying your method as I have just about got my head around it, thanks to the way you explain it in a way a layperson like myself can understand. Kind of wishing I bought the victron multiplus ll now, but I have the renogy 3000w inverter charger so I will run with it set up the way you laid it out. Hey there, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Your kind words mean a lot to me and make all the effort I put into creating the video worth it. I apologize for not being able to source a contactor for 120v. You should be able to find a similar model that meets your needs. Ensure the contactor has at least two normally open (NO) contacts and one normally closed (NC) contact. Typically, they come with four poles, so you should look for two NO and two NC contacts. Also, ensure that the amp rating is sufficient to carry the current for the inverter. If you have any further questions or need additional help, please don't hesitate to contact me. Best regards, Jolly

    Thank you for a comprensive explanation why neutral to earth is needed for correct RCD operation with an inverter. A more expensive inverter charger from Victron, a Victron Multiplus, has the bonding relay/contactor built in, thus a much easier install. All the Renogy inverters and Inverter chargers on sale in the UK, for permanent instalation, 😢😊 are center tap design and where installed in a application with distributed multiple outputs sockets and metal cased appliances, are inherently unsafe unless a RCD is fitted with an additional bonding relay/contactor as shown in the video. 😢

    Hey Jolly, thanks very much for the informative video, I had a mare going through all the sockets, checking through all the wiring, trying to figure out where the neutral and live had been switched 😂 Out of interest, could the sockets just be run off one MCB on a radial circuit rather than having an individual MCB for each one?

  • @vandercampadventures

    @vandercampadventures

    8 күн бұрын

    Hey, thanks so much for your comment and kind words. Yes, you can install more than one socket on a radial circuit. The important things to consider are: - The radial circuit cable must be able to carry the current of the total load of the sockets. - The MCB must be suitably sized to protect the cable. Regards, Jolly

    Excellent video and have subscribed! very informative although I am now in panic mode! Has this issue been addressed yet? V3 p14 of the manual states it has the auto switching. Just got mine 2 weeks ago and if it is still not fitted then I am not sure what I will do for my son and his young families house boat installation. Trying to save every penny we can and had heard good things about Renogy (other than slow customer service) which is why we have invested in a DCDC charger, MPPT and the inverter together with 2 x 200Ah lifeP04. Not exactly cheap but cheaper than Victron and hopefully up to the task. Worst case I guess I could look at the relay option although then we start getting in to galvanic isolators etc and my head explodes! Keep up the great work and again, awesome video.

I have spoken to Renogy but they can't confirm if the automatic switch will be incorporated in the future. This information was removed from the manual so isn't in the newer versions. Out of interest, what manual version did you get with the inverter charger? V3.0 online doesn't include the automatic N-E bond switching. We've been using Renogy for 6ish years now, 2 years with our current camper and they perform really well and we've never had any issues. I decided to get an Automatic Transfer Switch instead of a rotary selector switch. Do you know if this would be installed in between the RCD and the contactor, or after the contactor? I know the inverter has a bypass mode but we didn’t want to be limited by the inverter when on hook up. So decided to get a ATS to auto switch over when hook up is on. Thanks again mate! • @vandercampadventures

    @vandercampadventures

    2 ай бұрын

    Hey Adam, thank you so much for the comment and kind words. It's reassuring to know it's helped you out. Ideally a short circuit current test should be performed at the mains hook-up to determine the size you need. However, this is impractical. Therefore, I would recommend 6KA. 6KA is typically used for domestic installations and 10KA is typically used for industrial installations. The KA value is how much short circuit current the CB can withstand. Hope that helps 👍. I now offer 1-1 assistance with installing and setting up the Inverter Charger so give me a shout if you need anything 👍. Regards, Jolly

    Hey up.. this is absolutely brilliant. Well presented and great understanding..content like this is very valuable even for us who will engage a sparky but it's nice to know why and how it works. I'm currently deciding spend extra on victron or enerdrive inverter (in OZ) which have built on RCD and neutrla earth bond, or go RENOGY inverter charger 3000w at a quarter of the price. ..My question. In Oz some say use and RCD AND RVD combined. But is your additional switch the same as just putting in a manual change over switch for shore power to inverter power do the same thing? To add more into the mix would I need a 3 position change over switch if I wanted to run between shore power/inverter power/petrol generator?? This is my dilemma picking the correct inverter and correct switching method for 240v. This would make another great video.

    Hey Gavin, thank you so much for the comment and positive support, it means a lot to know were helping. We swear by and highly recommend the Renogy inverter charger because of it's high quality at an affordable price compared to the competitors. Also, the lack of a N-E bond and RCD can put people off but i have designed a way to install an RCD with an addition of a N-E bond - I have a detailed wiring diagram for this. RCD & RVD - An RCD must be installed and an RVD is not required by regulations. However, an RVD can be installed with an RCD for additional protection. Additional Switch - The contactor and N-E bond setup in the video is not the same as a bypass switch. The contactor is designed to introduce a N-E bond when the AC output power is supplied from the inverter (not on hook-up). This N-E bond is required to ensure an RCD will function on the AC output and protect you. Changeover Switch - A changeover switch can be installed to bypass the inverter. However, in my opinion, a changeover switch is not necessary because the inverter has a built in bypass switch that will automatically bypass the inverter when it senses an AC input. There is a lot more to cover in this topic so would agree that this would make a great KZread video. Ide be more than happy to go into more detail and work with you to find the best solution for you. I can also design detailed wiring diagrams to suit your setup. However, i do charge for consultations, support and wiring diagrams. Thanks jolly. Watching the video are we concluding if ALL your 230-240v sockets are double pole, that's Means there is no need for a contactor switch ? Secondly, if there is no need for a change over switch from battery power to inverter power, how would this work if you plug in a generator into the external 15amp into the caravan? No need for may change over switch in that regard? I will run the 3000w RENOGY inverter as it's $400AU and already have a lithium charger,.so the weight of the inverter charger and the fact it's no earth bond anyway seems better option to run separate 240v charger imo. 3. Do you run battery to chassis ground or buss bar or shunt to chassis ground?

    Fantastic informative and thoughtful videos which should be receiving revenue from Renogy for doing their job for them. I'm going to be fitting the 3000W inverter soon and this has helped greatly, thanks. I'm planning on running a camping induction hob from it, so I need to be attentive to every detail as I'll be drawing a fair old wattage from it. Can I just ask, when you are using 240v sockets in the van, does everything go through your inverter circuit regardless of whether you are on shore power or not? Meaning, does your inverter always have to be switched on to enable the bypass to operate? Or do you have independent shore power sockets that would allow you to disable the inverter? Cheers

    Hey buddy, thanks for getting in touch. We don't really use RVD's in the UK, they're currently not a requirement in the regulations. However, some installations do benefit from them. The regulations state that an RCD must be used. Therefore, an RVD is to be used alongside an RCD as 'additional protection' and not to be used without an RCD. In some instances an RVD will pick up a fault before the RCD. I hope this helps 👍. Let me know if you have any more questions. Regards, Jolly

    Hey John, thanks for raising your concern. I presume your watching the video to gain knowledge and help with installing the product and how to get an RCD to function? As an expert on the I've provided a clear and concise wiring diagram to ensure your system is safe and meets current UK wiring regulations and standards. Something the product manual doesn't provide. The wiring diagram and product design have taken a few years of design and testing. This is to ensure the setup meets current regulations and will ensure anyone with a little knowledge can install it and be safe. Also, 20 years of electrical experience, time to make the KZread video and designing the wiring diagram. The price also includes 1:1 e-mail support from myself if you need any help or guidance. Based on this, we feel the £15 price is very reasonable. However, if you still have concerns please e-mail me.

    Hey mate at 13:07 you recommend using either a 30A or 63A RCD, I could only find a 40A one where I live. Would it be alright to use a 40A one?

    Hi Sorry to be a pain but in the recap at 13:04 it states 30mA MINIMUM for the RCD .Yet in the literature you highlighted at 10:13 it states 30mA MAXIMUM for the RCD. Have I misunderstood somewhere ? Cheers. Fattrucker

    Hey Fattrucker, Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. Your right, the recap statement of 30mA minimum is incorrect. The RCD must not exceed 30mA. Thanks again Fattrucker 👍, I'll keep you in mind to proof watch the next video before we publish it 😉. Regards, Jolly

    Hey Met, We're currently looking at designing a manual, document or kit for the N-E bond contactor. Does the AC output of your inverter wire directly into a DP socket?

    Please note that your inverter/charger does not have enough room on each end to cool plus mounted in a small enclosed space. With that said your inverter/charger will overhead and shut off.

    Hey Harry Thank you for sharing your concern. As someone who has worked with electrical components for 20 years, I completely understand the devastation that heat can cause. However, it is important to note that the manual guidelines for the location and ventilation of the inverter charger are just recommendations. While designing our layout, I was worried about ensuring adequate ventilation for the inverter charger. However, to follow the recommended ventilation guidelines, we would have required a space of 1000mm x 700mm, which we do not have. Therefore, I contacted Renogy support to express my concerns and discuss our proposed airflow and vents plan. Renogy confirmed that their stated ventilation guidelines are recommendations only. The most important thing is to ensure the vents aren't blocked and the air can move and circulate through the inverter charger, which should not be in a sealed box. Our unit is not in a sealed box; it's in a space allowing sufficient airflow. We have installed 2x 75mm drop-out vents in the floor, one on either side of the inverter charger. Additionally, we have created 3x 50mm vent holes in the seat base to ensure the air can circulate underneath the bench seat and electric compartment. Given my concerns, I have closely monitored the unit's temperature when the charger is charging at full power (65A), and the inverter is powering a high load. I can assure you that the unit does get warm, but not enough to cause any concern, even during a 2-week heatwave of 40 deg C. Regards, Jolly
