Today we will be taking a very underestimated highspeed train, in my opinion the Renfe Avant S114 'New Pendolino' EMU. It's a full trip on the highspeed line from the beautiful Valladolid to the capital, Madrid so I hope you enjoy the video!

Some clarifications, as I usually take this train: The journey is 182km, and the best time is 53 min on the non-stop AVE services. Before the opening of the High-Speed Line, the only option was the classical line that is 250km and goes through a mountain pass, so the best time was around 2 hours and 30 min. The high-speed line avoids this problem by going through a 28km tunnel that is one of the longest in the world.
I love the S-114, it is definitely my favourite train in Spain. A single ticket is cheaper than an Ave or Alvia service and you get a more smooth and silent ride than taking the iconic "duck" trains (S-102, S-112, S-130, S-730) despite taking the very same time to cover the route. You don't get a cafetería service aboard, but it would feel pointless to have one for a just one hour trip. I only wish they had at least one level floor door per side to allow easier access to reduced movility people and some extra space for the overhead racks. But overall, the train serves it purpuse really well and the exterior aesthetic look great. Too bad that we don't hace more of those on the Spanish tracks. I have heard they were initially planning to purchase 30 sets, but they were reduced to 13 because of their high manufacturing price.

Madrid Chamartin is in a huge amount of enginering works for more capaciy, specially in constructing more standard gauge platforms. The new standard gauge north-south tunnel in Madrid has opened in late summer. This october starts the change of Madrid terminus stations for some services (form Puerta de Atocha to Chamartin) for the enginering works in Puerta de Atocha. Also Chamartin is in a huge amount of enginering works to increase capacity, specially on standard gauge side.

Well, the price certainly explains why the train was almost empty. One question: what happened to the previous generation of Spanish Pendolinos (roughly equivalent to ETR460/470) which were operating on iberico gauge on Valencia line (and probably elsewhere) before the HS line was built?

S-490 units have been out of service for a really long time due to security issues with the bogies (more or less the same issues as in CP S-4000 "Alfa Pendular"). Fortunately, they are being repaired and will be used for Medium Distance services, initially in southern Spain, with a top speed of 160 km/h (instead of the 220 km/h top speed by design). It was mainly used in Madrid to Valencia "Alaris" services, in this 1668-mm-gauged line **BUT** it was a extremely short train for the passenger demand in these services. Then, it served some few other services, like "García Lorca".

Yeah the Alaris sets have gone, but the S114 standard gauge Avant services still run!

@@NonstopEurotrip Not yet. These sets are being refurbished. Obviously, the "Alaris" service has gone, but not the trainsets. In these sets, the bogies are being replaced. I think these sets will not be pendular anymore. The old caféteria area in 2nd coach is being filled with seats. They are installing ERTMS, GSM-R and new version of digital ASFA signalling systems to these units. They are also installing driver rear-view cameras. In the end, these units will have 171 2nd class seats + 2 spaces for wheelchairs, and they will be again in service for much more than a dozen years.

Lovely video! I’ve travelled on this train before a couple of times with Avant and it was lovely. I’ve used the AVANT S-114 and S-121 EMUs for this journey and I much rather prefer the S-114 EMUs. Not really a fan of the S-121 EMUs as they make more noise and aren’t as comfortable and smooth. I do have to admit prices were a tad bit expensive when I took this service with the S-114 in 2021. Great video! ❤

Nice. Used those trains on the Warsaw - Gdynia route a couple of times, they're very good I think: decent level of comfort and good food option on that route.

Just one note about the English text - "Wheelchair facilities are in space". It might be clearer to say they are available. Great video as always and that peacock looks so beautiful 😍 and talking about this new train set I am quite impressed by it and in terms of features this new train set tick all the boxes but yes, level boarding is going to be a minor drawback.

I just took one of these yesterday from Santiago de Compostela to Madrid Chamartin. Quite alright, decent food options on board, clean toilet, but what I found weird was that there was no wifi on board. But one thing to note. At least, Santiago de Compostela to Madrid could be cheaper flying Ryanair, but all the tickets were sold out.

From Santiago to Madrid are S-130 trainsets "Alvia", not "Avant" S-114 trainsets. S-130 are Talgo long-distance trains, featuring on-board cafeteria, and also a top speed of 250 km/h. S-114 are high-speed medium-distance trains. In medium-distance trains, there is not on-board cafeteria, but automatic vending machines.
Seems quite expensive, I know a lot of people don’t like the toilet tour but my wife uses the bathroom often and it’s important for her to know how clean they are and she loves Spain but more up around the basque region, probably cooler there

In poland we have the same train. We called it "pendolino" andit have ED250 number. We drive it 293 km/h!. Sorry for bad englisch

Castille and León, the *(by now)* only autonomy in Spain where the conservative and far-right people are happy just because they govern there, like in Italy after last Sunday's Legislative Election *(I'm writing this on Monday, because I'm a Channel Member & I can watch videos early than you)* P.S: The name "Madrid-Chamartín" no longer exists, from December 2020, the major station in Northern Madrid is called "Madrid-Chamartín-Clara Campoamor" But you surely are questioning who is Clara Campoamor. Well, she was a woman elected for the Spanish Parliament in the Spanish 2nd Republic (1931-1936) and she was the woman who made that in the 1931 Spanish Constitution, the right to the Spanish women to vote appeared for the first time in the history of Spain. Now, the Government would change the name of Puerta de Atocha Station to Puerta de Atocha-Constitución de 1978 (The constitution we have today), but the government encountered problems to rename that station, as the Government of the Region of Madrid wouldn't change it due to historical and/or agricultural reasons, due to a Virgin, the "Virgen de Atocha" and/or due to the Esparto grass' lands there were before the station was constructed in the 1850's

@Nonstop Eurotrip On the land in the area currently occupied by the Atocha station in Madrid and the Ministry of Agriculture building, etc... What existed in S. XIX was an olive grove, the so-called Olivar de Atocha. It is on these lands that the primitive Atocha pier was installed, a precarious wooden building where the first and privileged travelers of the so-called "Camino de Hierro de Maria Cristina=Maria Cristina Iron Road" (by the regent queen, Widow of Fernando VII) between Madrid and the royal site of Aranjuez, where the closest Summer Palace of the Spanish monarchy was located. There is another in La Granja de San Ildefonso province of Segovia. And very close to this one of the avenues for walking, the so-called Alameda de las Delicias, which was laid out in the XVIII century in the time of King Carlos III, in what is the area of the old Madrid Delicias station, headquarters of the National Railway Museum. Said museum is in a more than lamentable state of conservation, the building needs an urgent restoration, which was the head of the line of the Madrid to Caceres and Portugal-MCP Railway. The preserved pieces also need a lot of revision and cleaning.The locomotives, they are all dead and even the only one 2-4-2 "Confederation" of RENFE preserved from the series of 10 built, which was restored at considerable expense by the Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviario-ADIF, the disastrous bureaucracy and Spanish legislation is what prevents them from circulating on the general network of Iberian gauge no historical train with steam traction. What the Lord does not say that criticizes the rulers of the pseudo-right, is that those of their pseudo-ideology of the left and ultra-left, It is that theirs only know how to impose and govern by decree, they do not negotiate and agree on nothing in any government where they are, whether they are municipal, regional or national. Democracy is something else and they go against the current Spanish constitution. They have only known how to create division, poverty and tension in the Spanish population. In my opinion all the current Spanish political mafia parties are the same and the worst are the "Nazionalistos" = Nazi + Clever. Basques and Catalans (For corrupt, thieves and shameless). Finally, I do not know how the article "Pendolino" is titled when the Renfe Operadora 114 series (also the previous 104 series) do not have any assisted pendulation system of the kind developed in its day by FIAT Ferroviaria and after the sale of the division by the Italian multinational, currently in the hands of the French conglomerate, Alstom Transporte.

If only Alstom could of manufactured the new Pendolinos for the LNER (East Coast Main Line). Those New Pendolino trains are identical to the Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino used on the West Coast Main Line.

Rode round-trip from Madrid to Segovia twice and found the journey comfortable and quick. Super nice trains.
Great video as always. I had never actually heard of Valladolid. So, it was nice to see some of the city at the beginning of the video. I've noticed on the past few videos you telling where you can skip forward to to avoid the toilet review. Do you get a lot of complaints?

Definitely. You should take "Avant" service from Valladolid to Madrid-Chamartin-C.Campoamor, suburban train from Madrid-Chamartin-C.Campoamor to Madrid-Atocha, and AVE from Madrid-Atocha to Malaga
The vending machine is not broken, but the company that serviced them went bankrupt at the beginning of covid and nothing has been done to resolve it since. All trains run with them (half) empty

There are flagship trains (AVE, normally S-112 trainsets) running from Leon to Madrid-Chamartin-C.Campoamor, calling at Palencia and Valladolid (they do not call at Segovia-Guiomar). Between Valladolid and Madrid, there is "Avant" tarification available for these AVE services, but -- sometimes -- the AVE tarification with early booking is cheaper than "Avant" tarification, which is a real scam all over Spain. S-112 are faster than S-114 trainsets, as they run at a top speed of 300 km/h in this line; they take about 55 min to make the trip.

After the opening of the Basque Y and the finishing of the complete renovation of the portuguese liation (the Beira Alta line) there wil be even much more trains in this line because the international conections to France and to Portugal will be restored. Nowadays in this line there is also a service to Salamanca that can be later extended to Portugal.
