Still a bit sad that even in first class, they can't seem to be able to properly align the seats with the windows... But that's a general remark with most of today's trains.

Every time I saw these trains they’re absolutely rammed (probably thanks to the 9€ ticket!) It’s fast and frequent, that’s really all you’d need and expect - one really annoying feature is the driver cannot override the door sensors therefore the doors simply will not close if someone is in their way. 😅 Awesome video :)

Yeah this seems like so much better of an experience than during the 9 euro ticket. It was always completely full. One time all 4 toilets on the unit i was on were out of service. At 1 station i literally saw someone run out of the train, take a piss on the other railway track and run back into the train. And the madman made it in time due to the train not being able to leave due to overcrowding!

As a semi-regular RRX rider (don't take it for work commutes, but do ride it often for leisure purposes), I can say I absolutely love these trains. Their design is great and includes a lot of conveniences and clever features. I once rode on RRX trains for three hours and it was still enjoyable, 90-minute trips I've done several times. The seats are comfortable, the interior design is wonderfully clean and as spacious as it can be, the lighting is great - nice and warm in the evenings, and the performance is outstanding. The RRX to me embodies a modern, fast and stylish regional rail service. It has a strong visual identity and backs it up with strong rolling stock. The way the Desiro HCs can accelerate makes you question if you're on a train, or in a sports car sometimes. I think having such a system is great for North Rhine-Westphalia, which is sometimes looked down upon as run-down and underdeveloped. I'm glad we have this distinct system that stands out among all the others and that shows that despite our rough edges, great things are happening here. Glad to see others agree!

@@jan-lukas If you look at cities like Duisburg, Neuss or Mülheim, you could certainly be forgiven for thinking NRW is some run-down, grimy and poor state. There are definitely several cities that struggle financially and that look quite stuck in the 90s or so.

I am happy that you liked the RRX so much. I live in the most eastern part of Northrhine-Westphalia wich is probably the part of NRW that is most far away from the Rhine-Ruhr-Area. But nonetheless we have two RRX lines connecting this region to this area (RE6 and RE11). Recently I took the RE6 from Bielefeld(where I live) to Dusseldorf and to Cologne and back and I really enjoyed the trips. It is quiet and most of the time it seemed reliable and it is very fast. One funny story I have about this train is when I was on my way back from Cologne (to Hamm where I had to switch trains) and the train had to wait for passengers to exit the doors at some station so that we got a few minutes delayed. The train driver made an announcement where he angrily explained that the people should let the doors close when it is beeping. At the next station the same problem occured so he took the time to make another announcement where he thoroughly explained it again and appealed to let the doors close and that it would be better for anyone if we got back on schedule. At the next stations it went very well and after every stop he made an announcement where he was very happy and thanked the passengers for their coorporation and told them "You are the best".

A favourite of mine too! I always liked the look and feel of the RRX. Due to it's stunning livery, classy interior and no-nonsense ride experience. The trains travel at high speed through a densely populated area, stopping only at key stations where many get on and off with relative ease. Almost giving the feeling of an Intercity. Lastly, its capacity offers a large amount of seats (except during the 9 euro-period obviously, where every RRX train between Düsseldorf-Köln-Koblenz and through the Ruhrpott was filled to the brim). Compared to the other German regional express trains I experienced (of which DB, Westfalenbahn, BWegt, NordWestBahn, VIAS, etc.) I like this National Express service the most! Great video : )

These trains are owned by the state and rented to (currently) national express, or whoever wins the next tenders for the lines in question (for up to 15 years) - originally some were run by Abellio, but they went bankrupt, and so their lines were moved to national express as an emergency program to keep the trains running. I believe some other states have similar programs, but traditionally anyone who wanted to win those tenders had to bring their own trains. For those who don't know, I believe national express is a private British business, and Abellio -is- was a subsidiary of the Dutch national railway.

One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is the Desiro HC's unbelievable acceleration (comparable to light rail metro trains). On the 50 minute section between Cologne and Aachen it can easily make up five or more minutes of delay on acceleration alone (when compared to loco-hauled stock and other EMUs). The trainset has a design speed of 125 mph, so it takes no time to get to 100 mph. As for the capacity, if you're unlucky you'll find that these trains can easily hold double their usual passenger number. Not a fun experience though, unless you like to spend your time smushed against a window.

Excellent video. Glad your trip on German rails went well. We have had a less enjoyable experience with them recently, with over an hour late departure (defective loco) from Cologne on the SBB service up the Rhine to Zurich. Due to a casualty on the line south of Offenberg, we were all told to get off the SBB train at Karlsruhe (as it was to be terminated there) and on to an already overcrowded ICE which was to be delayed for over an hour at Offenberg. It was chaos with very few announcements or help from staff. Anyway, there I spotted a local train to Freiburg im Breisgau and then another there to Basel Bad. In all, we were 5 hours late at our destination, Bellinzona.

It was an awesome train, I appreciated the free wifi and sockets, but such was not avaliable on the regional train which was sad, and it was also slightly slower, and this was my first experience with Deutsche Bahn being late/broken down/cancelled.

There is a trick for 24 hours tickets you buy in the VRS (Rhein Sieg public transport association) as official fare rules state that a 24 hour ticket allows you to travel "to any destination that is accesible with the chosen price-level from the starting point of your journey". Practically this means that you can buy an online ticket from the middle of your journey (i.e. Leverkusen, which is half-distance between Cologne and Dusseldorf) and save up to 50 % for return tickets and even more for 24 hour tickets....this is not how these tickets are meant to work, but its hard to prove thats its illegal to use them this way...

Although the RRX is certainly one of the better regional express trains in Germany, its comfort can by far not match Stadler „Traverso“ or „Mika“ trains in Switzerland which are in my opinion the best a regional train can offer in Europe. Sole exception may be regional trains in Sweden and Norway as they benefit from a wider clearance.

Many of the regional trains in Denmark also have excellent comfort, which is mainly due to DSB choosing to save money by using a single train type for both intercity and regional services - which means that the regional trains get full intercity comfort level! Some other trains have been acquired later that are more typical regional trains, though, and those aren't quite as comfortable as the older trains.

Together with the Stadler KISS (which stands for „komfortabler innovativer spurtstarker S-Bahn-Zug“ (internal SBB code RABe 515)) BLS (Bern Lötschberg Simplon) has an extremely modern rolling stock that are awesome to ride.

Slight correction the RRX scheme and the RRX Siemens Desiro HC trains are owned by the transport authority and leased for operation to initially 2024 to national express Rail Germany and abellio Rail NRW (subsidiary of the dutch state railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen). After in 2021 abellio Rail Germany went into administration due to the effects of the c thing and the fact abellio overbid themselves (samething happend to the German passenger rail subsidary of French railway company SNCF: keolis Deutschland) the operation was awarded as operator of last resort to national express till the end of the year 2024 afterwhich after North Rhine Westphalia might change the operting company once again. RRX is the name that the NRW regional express network is destined to become... But that is planed for like in 10 years... Compare it to TFL-Rail which did become the Elisabeth Line

The classic Loco-hauled / Twindexx Multiple unit double decker Carriages from DB Regio on some other lines in the region are MUCH more comfortable. Also, many seats have a really shitty view out the window as they are badly aligned and also often feature these huge spacings for the part that is openable. Lastly, the announcements are the most unnatural I’ve ever heard and are way to loud. I think every regional train in Germany is more comfortable 😅
