I get lots of questions about Renfaires and how to go to them and have fun so I thought I'd make a video about it! I didn't want to make it too long so there will definitely be another part for costumes, and maybe a third part if it seems like I've missed a lot of information. If you have any questions or important things that I've missed let me know in the comments so I can put it all in another video!

My partner and i get overloaded pretty easily, so what we like to do at the ren faire we visit regularly is find a tree in an area with not a lot of people and we sit and people-watch, or one of us will doze while the other watches our stuff. You get a good rest in the shade and the aesthetic experience of lounging under a tree with your lover in fantasy clothes. Try an area that's on the periphery, off to the side of a stage maybe. Ironically our favorite spot is near the town center in a small copse of trees that make it hard to traverse, so people stick to the other side of town center where the food and stuff is.

In my part of Canada they tend to call these events Medieval Faires, not Ren Faires, so if you're looking for something in your area, try that as a search term too.

As someone who has performed at my local renfaire for over a decade, get there AS EARLY as you possibly can. Waiting two to three hours after opening at my faire would make you wait in an hour to two hour line to get into the parking lot. Most faires have opening gate shows so if you get there super early, you won't have to wait long before entertainment starts.

I was 18 when I went to my first Renaissance Faire - I went with my mom to Bristol. She had some interest to begin with, but she ended up enjoying it a LOT more than she expected (and she's not a real nerdy person). You'd be surprised what your parents may be into! Editing to add: If anyone has the chance to go to the Louisiana Ren Faire, deff go! It's in November so you won't be dying of heat exhaustion! I used to go while I lived there for college

The parking pass for the Minnesota Ren Fest is new this year. I haven't ever bought a parking pass for it. The parking has always been a nightmare. It sometimes takes an 1.5 hr to get in and another 1.5 hr to have. Hopefully that helps reduce the parking issue

  • @sarahjriley

Minnesota is owned by the same management company that does Michigan and they're implementing a parking pass this year too and blaming local ordinances 😒 I don't mind paying for it (I do season passes so I get it included anyway), but at least be honest about it... We've had nothing but issues since they took over...

@@sarahjriley Interesting. I didn't know that. I've only been to the Minnesota faire as a toddler and then again as an adult so I didn't really notice a difference because of the huge time gap.

I will add to bring disposable tissues or something like that in case the porta potty toilet paper runs out. And eye drops if you wear contacts or get dry eyes because it can get really dusty, depending on venue/location. Take the porta pottys into account when you're planning out the skirt/dress situation, as it's pretty cramped in there. And for anyone asking about how to store things in ways that match your outfit: tie-on pockets can be made easily, can be huge and hold lots of stuff, and can easily match an outfit or go under your skirt/dress if it has side openings, like apron-front skirts.

Minnesota Ren Faire is transitioning to paid parking because they have gotten so popular it's created a major parking problem in a town that is too small to support it. It's actually really bad for the roads, o now there's also a park and bussing situation that gets you a $5 coupon.

For any folks that are going to King Richards Faire (Carver, Mass.). I have not been recently, however, tons of MUD & humidity & mosquitos ! (Carver, Mass. is the land of cranberry bogs !) I know last time I went parking was an issue, nit sure if thats still an issue. I LOVE @JacqueZ.Whipper, who is a local guy (used to be a radio guy locally) if I go, it's mainly to see him & his "sidekick" @SesCarny !

I know my local ren faire does this but STUDENS CHECK WITH YOUR SCHOOL FOR THE REN FAIRE FIELDTRIP OPTION!! my school had a free field trip to the ren faire, so the only thing we had to pay for was if we bought anything in the ren faire. That was when I was finally able to go to the ren faire for the first time. Yes if it's students day then PARENTS all the bars and taverns will be closed. Along with individual shop's rules. The leather shops did not allow you to go inside and touch anything. While the jewelry shop let you try on their clip on earrings and elf ears.

I've always gone alone myself. I wasn't much of a friend making guy growing up, so I do not know anybody well enough to go on a multi hour drive and eight hour day with. I have mad multiple good friends at fairs however. I do sometimes get depressed when I dwell on my loneliness, but there's still nowhere else I'd rather be.

I’m going to my first Ren faire in two weeks, it’s a 4 hour drive away and over the border (Canada to the US) My husband & son are dropping me off by myself and doing their own thing. I’m hoping that I can find others to hangout with but I’m fine by myself if not. I’m an 8 hour drive away from the Minnesota one so I’m planning for next year 😊 I’ll also have a small one just outside my city next year as well so I have lots of opportunities to wear the dress I’m currently making!

Super bummed we can't make it to the Fae ball, but with flights and stuff it just wasn't financially a thing for this year. I really hope its successful enough to happen again, because we'd love to make it in the future. Also, a huge thank-you for this video. I've done the SCA thing for awhile now, but never actually been to a Ren Faire. Which is silly, because it looks like a great time ^_^ Looking forward to one of those in the future!

Idk when I'll be going (the pirate weekend is unfortunately during Rosh Hashanah otherwise I'd 1000% be going that weekend) but I'm definitely going to try to make some friends when I'm there. Bring cash to tip any performers you watch too. If they have physical CDs or thumb drives for sale, buy them there instead of online. Some fairs don't pay their musicians or pay very little, so they need those tips and CD/merch sales. Even if you sit and just listen to one song, leave $1 in their tip jar. If you don't, be prepared to be heckled as you do the walk of shame. Also, going to fair by yourself is fun, so don't worry if you can't find someone to go with you, you will meet people!
