RENEWING A VISA IN UDON THANI, THAILAND

It's time to renew my tourist visa for another 30 days. I've heard Udon Thani Immigration is quite easy to use. Let's see if that's true.

Yeah 1900B at immigration. You could have done that last time if you applied for the dual or triple entry tourist visa from the UK before you left. Extend after 60 days at immigration gives you 3 months of no worries. Still have to do a border run after that though. Anyway doesn't hurt going to other countries, but eventually may not be allowed in if you do too many comings and goings.

@@jacked6 Yes…I’m a 72 year old Canadian with quadruple bypass. Northwest European ancestry. I learned about “Acclimatization”. Acclimating…..allowing the body to adjust to a different climate or different altitude. I flew out of Canada in the middle of winter…snow and ice. Landed in Chiang Mai, Thailand less than twenty hours later, and stepped off the plane into what felt like a very hot furnace. I made sure my apartment had north and south facing windows, four floors up to get a bit of a breeze, used the fans, but never turned on the airconditioning. I wore men’s Columbia button up shirts, summer weight material, fast wicking, fast drying, long sleeves that can roll up, one size too big….to allow air circulation next to the body. Same with my long pants. I dress more like a local than a tourist. Ventilated medium brim hat…. No socks of shoes. I go barefoot in men’s Teva Holliway sandals. I eat small, light meals….mostly fruit and vegetables. Noodles, little bit of fish. No western fast foods or heavy meats. I avoid alcohol, and drink mostly bottled water or fruit juice. I found that for two to three weeks…..yes I suffered in the heat. But then the suffering stopped. And I was able to ignore the heat. Even when we had several days in a row of 40° and 41° Celsius. I no longer suffered with it. Could I feel the heat? Yes. Did it bother me and make me suffer? Nope. Not any more. This acclimatization is lost when you return to your own country, and has to be repeated again next time you go to the tropics. You have to be willing to suffer for those first two or three weeks, and then you’re fine. Use airconditioning ? ? Okay……but then every time you step outside….it will feel like you are stepping into a hot furnace and you WILL suffer. I reached the point where I found air conditioning in a taxi or a store to be actually very uncomfortable….and couldn’t wait to get outside in the heat. I will never again use air conditioning.

@@robertwilliamson922 that's very dangerous however. Most health recommendations are for temperatures over 40 degrees to always be in air conditioning to minimize heat stroke. Fans can only do so much. Over 40 degrees and it just blows hot air on you. Most governments have extra recommendations for people over 60. Heat stroke is a real threat for your age bracket. Take care

The place you are staying are responsible for registering you within 24 hours of you arriving. Hotels etc do this online & the form is a TM30. So you need to get a copy of the TM30 form & take that along with your passport. Then as Eddy says they take the photo, do the photocopying & even fill in the forms & you pay extra 100 THB for all that so you pay 2,000 THB instead of the 1,900 THB.

@@rossharper-ds4dn Yes it’s up to immigration at the end of the day. The form Eddy had didn’t have the name of the place Eddy is staying or the address on it & neither of us had internet on our mobiles. The lady in immigration connected my mobile to the office internet so we could look the address up & fill this missing info on the form. So that was no problem at Udon immigration but other immigration offices might have made an issue of it & stuck a hand out for you to pay a fine that you probably not get a receipt for.

@@jtns2845 Everything in Thailand is like standing on shifting sands, looking through mud stained windows at moving goal posts & visas are included in that. Before the Pandemic there was talk of increasing the financial requirement for visas which have not increased since 2003, maybe imposing mandatory health insurance on the O visa same as the O-A visa. Most Countries that offer retirement visas to Expats on a budget are 3rd world & poor & Thailand is no longer classed as either of these. So we could see a lot of changes in the not to distant future & they might even scrap the retirement visa altogether. With the 10 year LTR that let holders bring in as much overseas income as they like exempt from Thailand income tax they are trying to attract wealthy Expats & they have targeted selling 500,000 in 5 years. So far they are miles away from the 500K target but you can see the direction they want to go. I am told it’s $500 to $700 for a 1 year business visa for Laos & you don’t need to do any business. Laos is also same as the Philippines in as far as if only has a territorial tax meaning it only taxes income made in Laos. Long term accommodation in Vientiane is about 3 times the cost of Udon Thani. Now In Laos put up a Vid 5 months ago & APARTMENT RENTAL COST VIENTIANE LAOS NEENEE LAO LIFE should take you to the Vid. It was an 30 day extension on his visa exemption stamp that Eddy got & your only allowed one of them & after that you have to leave the Country. Thailand give visa exemption stamps on arrival to certain Nationalities at no charge unlike other Countries like Laos & Cambodia were you have to buy a visa on arrival. There might be Countries that give visas & visa extensions at no charge but I can’t think of any. Thailand guideline for maximum stay on tourist status has always been 180 days & now with the change to the income tax rule & anybody staying 180 days or more being classed as a tax resident I expect Thailand immigration will strictly enforce this guideline.

Eddie doesn't know the difference between a visa and a visa exemption.

Depends which visa you get. I’m a 72 year old Canadian, and I’m eligible for the O-A non-immigrant retirement visa. It comes to $280 Canadian per year. 7,491 Baht. If you just go with a monthly tourist visa extension, you will pay much much more over time.

@@robertwilliamson922 I am on an O retirement visa & it costs 1,900 THB for a single entry extension which is the same for all single entry visa extensions regardless of visa type or length of extension. For a multi entry visa I first buy a single entry which they then put the cancel stamp on & stamp in a multi entry. So total cost is 1,900 for the single + 3,800 for multi = 5,700. You give the cost in C$’s so is that for a single entry, multi entry. Is some of the additional cost in THB due to fluctuations in the exchange rate &/or additional charges such as postage.

Going to a Thai inmigration office can be a real hassle, better book your 60 day visa beforehand.

Don't forget you'll need to show a ticket out of Thailand before the 30 days is up or they might refuse you boarding the plane at point of departure
