Rendering for Architects, Pt. 3: Setting Up Materials in 3ds Max
This video covers the main tools I use to apply materials to my Revit models in 3ds Max. You'll get a quick run down on how to apply materials from Corona's included material library, an overview of creating materials from scratch with 3ds Max's material editor, and an easy way to adjust how the textures are applied to your geometry (UV Mapping).
Here are some shortcuts to the main topics:
#1 - Corona material library 02:26
#2 - Building materials in the Max material editor 03:56
#3 - Adjusting your UV mapping 10:53

Your videos cover in minutes, what some Vis. instructors take a whole semester. This is the most concise and helpful tutorial I’ve come across. Keep them coming!

Haha! I think a lot of instructors tend to get too detailed, too quickly which is when people start to get lost in the settings and lose interest... I really think that creatively using the basics can cover 95% of most people's cases. Thanks so much for letting me know, I'll definitely keep them coming!

hey man, I just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial series, great job! I have been working with 3DS max and Vray + Revit for 4 years now, and learned bits and pieces from here and there, but I am still getting a lot of good practice foundation tips from your vids. Thanks!

Wow man just wow. You have broken down so simply what I have stuggled with mightely w/ 3ds Max: You don't need to learn every setting! I'm with the other comments, you deserve a wider audience. You made it fun again to learn. Thanks again.

Thanks man, appreciate it! I’m deep in the first year of having a baby but am planning on getting more content out there once life slows down a bit. Cheers!
Great Video. Hope you continue to upload tutorial such as this type, showing the step by step settings, and how to go through materials settings. Hope you could also show tutorials using Arnold rendering. Thanks in advance.

nice video.
Hello, thank you for this series of tutorial! It help me a lot. I have a question about reloading .FBX file after texturing in 3DS MAX. will the texture reset to revit material or stay in corona material? Thank you a lot for answering. 🤗
You are such a god dude

Haha thanks man!
Are there any adjustments, manipulations required to use SBS/SBSAR materials in max w corona render?
When selecting a new corona material in the material editor, nothing comes up, no sphere shaped object or anything, that’s with the corona physical material and the legacy material, any help would be appreciated! Reflection is also not on the basic options.. may have something to do with being on the 2024 version
Great tutorial! I often work with phasing in Revit (existing, demo, new). I noticed that when I import the fbx file in 3ds max, the components that are in the existing phase are grouped in one layer named "Phase-Exist". Is there a way to avoid this, or any work around to assign multiple materials to "existing" components from Revit? Thanks!

I found a solution! (changing the Existing material to "no material" in Revit phase filter graphic overrides)
*can u share your 3ds max file or Revit of the house so that way we can follow your steps better?*
Your video is awesome but I have a Problem maybe you can help me to fix it. When I bring my revit model to max, my model is on big object and I can't see the materials. You know why?

Take a look at the FBX “Presets”. You want to make sure you’re selecting the “Combine by Revit Material” option. That way it breaks everything up by material instead of importing it all as one object. Let me know if that helps!
