Rendering for Architects, Pt. 2: 3dsMax & Corona Basics

Let's explore the main features of 3ds Max that you'll need to make awesome renderings from our Revit models. You don't need to have any previous 3ds Max experience, I'll break down all the relevant UI elements and features you'll need for Arch-Viz. After an epic crash course in Max, we'll build a simple template file that will help streamline your rendering workflow and save time on future projects. Lastly we'll link in your design from the previous video and setup your first rendering with Corona. By the end of the video you will have applied a white override material to the scene and set up a global HDRI light so you can start doing lighting studies with Corona's interactive renderer.
Here are some shortcuts to the main topics:
#1 - 3ds Max overview 01:27
#2 - Rendering settings template 07:58
#3 - Linking your Revit model & your first rendering 12:36

    Great video series, very concise and informative. What is the benefit of linking the .fbx instead of the actual Revit file? I'm guessing it has something to do w/ exporting the landscape separately from the building model. Thanks for putting in the effort on these videos, keep it up!

    Hey! Apologies on the late reply, missed this comment. It’s largely to help out if you’re working in an office with multiple people. One person could be designing the building in Revit while the other person is setting up the landscape, site work, context, etc. in Max. That way when you relink the building you don’t also relink all the site context and risk have some modeling blow ups. It’s not 100% necessary but can cut down some headaches occasionally.

    Hi there, I really like the channel! Hopefully we get to see more and more of your video's between the two software's? Why would you say its better to LINK FBX over LINK Revit? I thought you would have more flexibility over your Revit file having it linked into max? Or is FBX always better? thanks for your time

  • @VanVoorhisArchitects

    Thanks, yes I have a bunch planned and am sure I’ll come up with more as feedback rolls in. Let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see! One of the biggest reason I do the FBX link is that I’ve just been doing this for years and the “Revit Link” was practically unusable until some of the recent versions of Max. That said, I’ve tried it and the ability to link in just a specific 3d view makes it very similar to the “FBX link” but I’m not totally convinced yet for a couple reasons that just depend on your workflow. I often export the building and site separately as 2 FBX files which keeps the exported geometry pretty light. Repeatedly linking to a Revit model fully loaded with notes, furniture, structural and MEP stuff just takes longer. Also the geometry isn’t imported in the layer manager into separate layers like it is with the “FBX link” which, while nit-picky, can be useful. Though arguable the biggest issue is that it requires you to keep Max and Revit in the same version. When you have a dozen plugins that work for one version of Max, then you have to wait for all of those to be supported before you can upgrade Revit. The “FBX link” isn’t affected by Revit & Max versions so you can keep your program upgrades a bit more independent of each other. I think Autodesk is pushing the “Revit Link” going forward but I’m not convinced yet. Give it a shot though, it might work great for your needs!

  • @VanVoorhisArchitects

    Hey Suvin! Thanks, I’ve got a few more planned that I’m just starting get to lined out. Stay tuned! There are a few difference between “link FBX and “link Revit” but they really still accomplish the same thing. Link FBX was the better method until the last couple versions of Max when they fixed a few bugs. I think Link Revit will be a good option for some people going forward as long as your Revit model is well organized. Max will ask to link to a specific 3d view set up in the actual Revit file which is the main difference. You should still get the same import options as Link FBX. I’m still partial to exporting a separate FBX file just to keep things a little separate, but ultimately both methods will accomplish the same thing. I’d say try both and see which one you like!

    Thanks for this useful set of tutorials! I used to work in rhino with Vray for rendering but then I switched to Revit and I was looking for a way to get nice renders out of my 3D models. The only thing I noticed is when I import the revit model as an fbx geometry in max all the curved, rounded and sweeps components are faceted. As an example, instead of being curved, an arch will show 16 or 20 segments, reminding me the awfull sketchup geometries... Is there any solution for this?

  • @VanVoorhisArchitects

    @VanVoorhisArchitects

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey, no problem! Yeah, 3ds Max will always triangulate curved geometry from Revit but you can control the import and make it look smoother. In your relink FBX options on reload (or in the presets modify tab), there is a slider under “Curved Objects Detail.” Try turning that up and seeing how it does. You can also try the “Auto-smooth adjacent faces” box which will sometimes help as well. Those are probably the first steps I’d go with. If you’re still not happy with it, you can start to add or try a “MeshSmooth” modifier to the curved geometry but that opens up a whole lot more options to fuss with, which may not be what you want to deal with yet. Let me know if those help!

    Hi! Thanks for your quick reply. Curved objects detail slider is already to the top. I tried Auto-smooth adjacent faces and it worked. It is not perfect but it is way better than it was!
