Renaissance Festivals: And Their place in modern Paganism

Ever since I was a boy I was always captivated by Renaissance festivals, and now as a modern pagan, I see them in a different light.
In this video I address some of the stigma around Renaissance festivals, while also making an argument for them having turned into "Heathen Hubs" for those who do not have a group to call their kindred.
I feature may clips from various booths and performers at the Kentucky Highland Renaissance Festival. Please consider attending, as they really are one of my favorite festivals!

here in denmark we have viking market where people come and show off their crafts and sells as they did in Viking times it might be an idea and do something like that
In eastern Oklahoma there is a Viking festival held in the spring and fall at the Heavener runestone. It was originally a state park now privately owned in order to fund the upkeep of what is believed by some to be a 7th century runestone in elder futhark. It's authenticity is debated, but a scholar from Uppsala university inspected it and concluded that it's authenticity would depend upon whether or not a Choctaw party seen it in the mid 19th century. Anyway, the atmosphere is much like a renaissance faire ( I bought mead from a descendant of Rollo the walking wolf ), with nice scenery. I've made a few videos about when I first got on KZread.

@@SplashyCannonBall I'm about 30 minutes from poteau.
I like how forward you were about you’re priorities brother, lmao ‘I got a really cool axe... i wanna talk about the axe... :D’
Thank you for supporting the craftsman! 🧙♂️
I have recently been interested in my Origins and aiming to get closer with my ancestors. I am from North West England, and after conducting a DNA test, I can confirm that I am over 30% Norwegian, which dates back to the Norse settlement in my area. After finding this channel it is helping me connect to them.

@@RagingBull_UK Aye, it makes sense, because I am from North West England, with Scottish and Irish families, and I have been told that we descend from Norse Gaels, who settled on the Isles

Hamilax most of your Norse wouldn’t be from the English it would be from the Irish. Irish are very norse-Gael. Especially in the east.
"How into it are you?" 😅🤣🤣
I love renaissance festivals too.. Always fun and you are right the art work at it is just amazing.
I actually perform at KHRF as "Luku the Mad Skald" and do a Norse themed musical act. I do several Heathen songs, including "Yggdrasil".
Michigan Nordic fire festival! You should consider attending. It's during the winter and there's a huge fire, they burn a Viking ship. It's an incredible time with loads of artists and craftsman there.
I know in Norway there are plenty of viking era re-enactment festivals that seem to be widely enjoyed by the Heathen community. So a Viking festival might be go over pretty well here. Great video man! Heathen Fest 2021, I’m in! Skål!

I live in England and we have the Jorvik festival and other viking festivals around Britain. I hope you arrange something over there and maybe grow in the future.
I can smell the smoked turkey legs and kettle corn even now. 😋
Now I can’t wait to stop by one of those cool festivals soon. Thanks once again my brother. Skal! 🍻🏰
Oh man, I saw one movie with a Wicca scene, picked up a single book at the library out of curiosity, and now I’m here. The internet is a crazy place
Grimfrost also makes some really good stuff as well from weapons to clothing to literature if anyone is interested in checking them out
Just a heads up. There's a viking fest which is a bit more our speed in Boone County Indiana mid August. Just figured I'd pass that info along.
Finding my way on this path, discovering your channel and learning more about the faith has been great. Ive always wanted to own alot of land, 10 to 20, or hel even 50 to 100 if I could afford it. But when I do get there, im definitely building a hall for all to come year round.
We have a "Mythical and Medieval fest" in myrtle Beach sc, that has a mead and beer tent, the crafty celts set up a booth and sell their jewelry, they made all the jewelry on the vikings show Theres a viking living history group that sets up And this year there was more norse booths set up than years before
Powerful message as always! Since connecting with the U.K community I cannot wait for events like these to start happening again! Many of us plan to attend them from all over the U.K. what a wonderful thing it will be! Skål Brother!
My perspective might be a little different as someone who worked and attended Ren Faires for a very long time. The pagan and heathen influences and roots have always been there-probably since the beginning. I mean even attending 20 years ago it was right under the surface. The fairies were one of the places you could really find stuff if you didn’t have a local metaphysical shop, and before the web commerce boom. There was definitely the secret club vibe since it was a place a lot of pagans felt they could openly wear markers of their faith. Totally the how into it are you. 😊 I love that it is coming to the forefront more. 10/10 would recommend Crimson Chain. I have a piece from the early 2000s that is still going strong.
Thanks so much as a new pagan...I absolutely love your content. It has been so helpful

Glad I could help my friend!
Here in Minnesota the Ren Faire is rather large and the thing I look forward to the most once the summer comes around. Particularly because I can support local craftsmen and find unique things for my practice. I love it.
My arrow fails!!!!! In all seriousness, thank you to my friends who came out and supported our fair! It meant the world to us the vendors and performers. It is such a wonderfully supportive community they have really felt the pressure of the fair season being delayed. Thank you thank you thank you!
The air B&B comparison is a spicy hot take 😂 but it works!
There is a Michigan Nordic Fire Fest! I follow Happy Little Heathens on YT and she included some highlights and discussions in her vids! Check it out!
Ren Faires are great. That's where I was introduced to heathenism. I started off as a Wiccan, then found out that Norse Paganism was a thing. Bought my first Mjolnir at the Holland, MI festival.
You need to visit a Celtic/highland games festival. I think it's a lot more like what you're thinking of. At the very least you'll have a great time watching people in kilts throw heavy stuff around. Also, guaranteed you'll run into more than a handful of pagans. But I would say you're thinking more along those lines for a Viking/Heathen/Pagan festival. You just need to come up with a main focus/event to center the craft and beer tents around.
The bottom line though, is having that sense of enjoyment after going. You could have a full on Midsummer's Blot on some land and have everything you ever wanted there, but if you didn't enjoy it what would the point be for you? The Ren-Faire's do have some cringe going on, but it's all in fun. Even the gods had their revelries and games. (Poor Baldur.... stupid mistletoe.)
I'm surprised the fair was allowed to happen. In Maine larger gatherings are not permitted.
i've honestly never felt a stigma, & i've been going every year for about 8 or 9 years.. i've made a lot of friends & memories there & if i'm honest, my love for it, on all the various levels, may have led me to where i am now. & following my ancestry led me there so.. it's kind of a full circle, (as with many things lately, i've noticed). i think it's a great place to meet up with friends, in an atmosphere that represents some of the little things in life.. free from modern constraints (if you choose), allowing you to truly embrace some of the old ways directly. & i don't mind that it's often a mixture of different cultures myself.. though an actual pagan festival in the same vein would be amazing! 🍻
I was thinking this was filmed last year. How in the world is Kentucky opening up for such huge social gatherings like Renaissance Faires? Is it because it's an out of doors event? The Renaissance Faires in my state have been cancelled due to COVID.
Great video. How into it are you? lol
There's a viking festival in Oklahoma. I went a year or two ago. I enjoyed it way more than the ren faire. Much more community oriented.

Are you talking about the one in Heavener?
with regard to finding more viking related materials when out. Do we think there is a natural resurgence happening or is it based purly because of T.V and films (marvel)
What about the Pensic War gathering?
Man, I need to find a local Ren faire for me. To Google!!
What if we called it something like "The Folk('s) Fest"?
Have you ever attended the Texas Renaissance festival (Scarborough)? If not you seriously need to go someday, it’s absolutely AMAZING! www.srfestival.com/

Scarborough is good, but held at the worst time of year - late spring when it's unbearably hot for anyone dressing up in costume. The Texas Renaissance Faire in Magnoila, Texas is one of the largest, if not the largest, in the USA. It's HUGE and well organized and attended and held in the fall, when it's a lot cooler and more enjoyable. My family still lives in Texas. As kids we used to go to both.
I have the same axe!! Differences cause theyre hand made but still!!
I would love a Norse burning man.
I'm pretty split down the middle on renaissance fairs, especially where I'm from, I don't think they're as commercial and fake as maybe the American ones are. But I do think it's a good source of handcrafted things and I do like supporting alternative lifestyles like performers working for tips, that's very much what I'm about. But I would say that the stigma is fairly detrimental too because of the whole "oh you're a pagan? do you go LARPing?" thing lol. Which I think can and does put some people off. Plus the pure cringe when you think about these places in general might put some pagans from "coming out of the broom closet" as Ocean Keltoi puts it lol. Skal.
You may be interested in what they're doing in Michigan...check out www.greatlakesmead.com and www.michigannordicfirefestival.com. BTW, I found these through the KZread channel "Happy Little Heathens - Stories from Midgard". It's a channel dedicated to kid-friendly Asatru education. Don't know anything about the woman who runs it but maybe a chance for a collab?
Just call it viking market
