Since I am a busy composer/performer and full-time faculty, I could never keep up with such a business. However, I am now contacting people who may be able to connect me to major companies such as Yamaha, Roland, Korg, etc. If any one of those companies gets interested to start a production line, I will be sure to announce it here. That being said, this certainly would be for a niche market, so I honestly am not sure if they would get interested…

What I am most impressed with is where you are taking this instrument musically! I can hear the musical language of people like Chick Corea becoming further enriched by microtones as found in the makam concept. Bravo 👏👏👏

This is almost exactly what I'm looking for! I wish something like this existed on the market that wasn't just a MIDI controller, but had its own sound engine so you could just plug and play without needing a computer.

I would be very interested in buying one of these. Not just for the microtonality, but it has such a distinctive timbre that I love. Really nice looking aesthetically and with a smart design the way you've kept the layout like a "normal" piano but fit the extra sharps in on top. This is the coolest musical invention I have seen in a very long time. I wish you success with your patenting.

I really am flattered by your kind words! Thank you so much 🙏 FYI, the prototype in this video is too fragile and too expensive. However, we’re now working on a more compact, lightweight and not necessarily fragile version that’ll be 3D printed using high quality materials. It’ll be much cheaper than what this prototype would cost as well. Stay tuned!!!

If you wanted more tones while keeping familiarity for pianists, you could add a short sharp/flat key between B and C and another between E and F. The Wikipedia article on the late Renaissance/early Baroque archicembalo shows one that has 2 manuals, of which the upper has 17 keys per octave like the Renaissance 17, and the lower has 19 keys per octave, with the added 2 keys as described above, the combination being intended to get 36 keys per octave, although 5 turned out to be redundant when producing 31 notes per octave.

Congratulations, I think this is a great achievement. In my humble opinion this instrument might be just a market research away from mass production. I have seen many semi professional and professional keyboard player-entertainers in the middle east who try to emulate microtonals by pitch bend wheels etc. These people will definitely show interest in this instrument as well as all the musicians who are into makam concept. This instrument has the potential to breath new life into contemporary music, pop, jazz. It is a broader palette for music creators who are very well accustomed to the piano keyboard.

I'd love to make a 19 tone keyboard some day that I can use to play 19, 12 or 17 for example by just re-mapping/un-mapping keys as needed, though I have barely done any woodworking nor electronics so I'm probably not going to make anything like that for a long time since I'm more into programming

Congrats on this amazing achievement, so are the intervals devided equally per octave for all 17 notes or perhaps there are other ratios you take advantage of above? Asking because the harmonies you get out of this instrument is truely magical and refreshing, quite hard to put my finger on though. thanks for preserving/building upon what our ancestors have given us! First of all, thank you SO much for your kind words and interest 🙏 I’m truly grateful for that. The temperaments I use do not divide the octave into 17 equal steps. It being a digital instrument/MIDI controller provides the advantage of being able to use any kind of unequal division out of which I select my desired 17 steps - I tend to focus on early European temperaments as well as a number Turkish makam modalities/flavors.

There are definitely hundreds of people out there I know (on microtonal Facebook groups) who would be interested in such an instrument, and probably even more with another couple of short keys in between E&F and B&C. Microtonal keyboard instruments are a growing niche, and I'm sure if this instrument or similar was available for purchase many people would be very happy. By the way beautiful keyboard design. Are the measurements similar to many 16th century Italian harpsichords with split keys? How do you find the transitions moving to that back row of keys? Also very glad maqam was incorporated here, it's great to finally see a microtonal keyboard instrument produced by someone with experience in that world too.

Sorry I forgot to answer your questions. Yes, the sizes are very similar to 16th and early 17 century Italian instruments. And I feel that I can move around easily around the keyboard.

@@msanlikol great range, I'm pretty sure I have the same on my Korg SV-1 keyboard. Pretty enormous if doing harpsichord repertoire (my harpsichord stops at F6, and even that sounds pretty strained), but it's probably fantastic for organ and more modern keyboard stuff. By the way, if you do want to gague interest and the viability for expanding the project to sell instruments, we can definitely set up a little survey in the microtonal groups, where there is a total base audience of probably 8,000 or more, and many of them will surely be interested.

Very interesting. It's a good point that for those of us who are used to the piano, the various 'isomorphic keyboards' are difficult to play, ironically since they often advertise that they should be easier to play than the traditional keyboard layout. In addition I have a hard time adjusting to the thought that a controller with 'buttons' is a musical instrument like the piano (that's only prejudice). I didn't know about the renaissance instrument with split sharps. Did you consider more keys in the octave, like black keys split in 3 or keys between E-F and B-C?

Thank you SO much for your interest and detailed comment! 🙏Anything more than 2 keys become overly complex as far as fingerings and stretches are concerned -- that is if you are really aiming to 'play' this instrument. However, I did consider E-F and B-C but during an early tryout with a small model it was clear to me that even that particular configuration was challenging visually as well as fingering wise. More importantly though, when one considers that one can easily create three microtonal flavors of pretty much any given key (such as F1, F[#]2, F[#]3), it almost becomes redundant to add more keys.

This is amazing (and the makam jazzlike music is cool. Maybe you could make a song like that in the hicaz makam lol)

Öncelikle güzel sözleriniz için çok teşekkür ederim ☺️ Bu klavyenin tuşlarının boyları eski ve yeni standartların arasında ama daha çok son dönem klavsenlere yakın zira üst tuşlara erişim açısından tuşların boylarının günümüzdeki standarttan kısa olması gerekiyordu. Her halükarda çalım tekniği konusunda beklenmedik pozisyonlar haliyle ortaya çıkıyor ama şu anki boyut sayesinde ben henüz bir problem yaşamadım.

I love all music and have always found eastern music that is microtonal to be capable of very haunting, spiritual, hypnotizing and transcendental melodies. I do have to admit as a guitarist with ears acclimated to western scales that sometimes it just sounds like it's way out of tune. I believe this happens when I hear the foundation of familiar major and minor scales combined with the split sharps. Anyways, that just my observation from ears acclimated to western scales (I'm not even sure if that's the right term) and it's more so when the instrument sounds like a traditional western instrument like a piano, Keyboard and most of all guitar. When I hear split sharps on say, a Sitar, I don't get that "out of tune" instinct like I would on a microtonal guitar etc... Very fascinating! This looks like an amazing instrument that can be used in so many creative ways being digital.

And, when you say “ears getting acclimated” I think you’re spot on: even though I’m no stranger to the world of microtones, strangely enough, I always find my ears normalizing the initial odd sensation I have toward the edgier microtones over say 15 minutes or so. In other words, after playing a certain microtonal temperament for about 15 minutes I find that my ears start acclimating and normalizing the pitches! Thank you SO much for your interest 🙏

Seems to be a great keyboard for Urmawî and Ottoman music, but the sounds? How about a historic sanrûr sample? That would be something! However, on a lute I require only 2 additional frets a comma apart from the chromaric ones to get the full 17 tone scale. But what if you, like Necdet Yaşar decıded you need an uşşak ın between kürdī and segâh? On the tanbûr ıt is just another little piece of gut wrapped around the neck…

Hello, thank you so much for your interest and detailed comment. Since this is a digital instrument it is possible to change the sounds and the tuning. As a result, if you wish you can use, as you suggested, a santur sample and/or you can change the tuning of each key. For example, the second 17 key tuning I programmed at the end of this video, in fact, uses an uşşak between a segah and a dik kürdi :)

I am fascinated by all things keyboard and have pondered other tunings for years but boy I must be so diatonic that I started to feel queasy.

Have you considered selling the plans for your instrument? I agree it's unlikely a big industrial firm will take on such a niche market, but it's exactly the kind of thing that would tempt a DIY hobbyist. Besides, concert quality acoustic instruments are pretty niche too, but there are no lack of dedicated people to make them, provided the customer will pay a reasonable price for what may be weeks or months of work.

If you listen to microtonal music long enough, does it start to sound like it’s in tune?

Totally!!! Ear tends to normalize the tuning environment for sure. This is even more noticeable with temperaments which use only pure thirds, for example. At first, ones ear registers pure thirds as noticeably flat. But shortly after you no longer hear them as such. In fact, at various times, I caught myself doubting whether I had changed the tuning or not! 😁

I grew up with microtonal music ingrained in me. Everytime i used to try to play the piano as a kid i just felt like it was limited. So it's definitely something that you'd get used to with time. Id recommend listening to eastern maqam music to really get a proper hold of microtones cause Western music doesn't do it justice

I am sure that that can feel weird at first, but isn’t it fascinating that that’s exactly how great European composers such as Monteverdi and Frescobaldi perceived music? To them a flat and a sharp were absolutely two different pitches

Hi, thank you so much for your interest! There has been enough inquiries that I’m now working on a 3D printed version of the R17 ☺️ The prototype in this video has a mechanism that is too delicate/fragile… The 3D printed version, hopefully, will be more compact and much less fragile. However, I’ll maintain the beautiful looks ☺️ So, stay tuned! Once the 3D printed version is ready, I’ll announce the price tag from here

However, there is the potential of a developer getting such a production line started. I will keep everyone updated about such possibilities.

@@msanlikol Maybe you could approach Roland... They have discontinued their C30 digital harpsichord and there would definitely be a gap in the market for 17 (and 19) keyed electronic harpsichord/organs that would allow various meantones to be programmed and played. encouraging this work.

Hi, first of all, thank you for your interest. Second, I did explain my reasoning for 17 keys as opposed to 31, etc. in the video. But, in a few words: I would like to be able to fly on the keys, not search for them while wrestling with awkward fingerings. A digital instrument which can easily switch between different temperaments with 17 keys works better for me. It may not for you. And I would certainly respect that.

(I have a high ed. in physics, sorry for that) Is a good idea, anyway. Isomorphic keyboards like Lumatone has some good properties, but you must study to play on them....... one more time)

@@nartoomeon9378 exactly! I was trained as a pianist and on R17 I can easily tell where I’m on the instrument. I can improvise with great precision and rather easily. If/when I need to change the temperament, it’s just a simple touch of a button. And, with 2-3 options per pitch at a given time, I can play almost any modal or historical tuning/temperament - for example, while classical Turkish music uses a tuning system where the octave is divided into 53 steps (+ a number of additional exceptional pitches), most makam [modal] constructs do not necessarily require more than 17 pitches per octave… In the end, anything beyond 2-3 options per pitch would require a different instrument but, to be perfectly honest, I just am not necessarily interested in those types of musics.

I appreciate and respect your comment. But these days there are really good piano sample libraries. So, having a digital instrument gives the benefit of being able to employ such sample libraries and not be stuck with 1 temperament only until the person tuning the instrument comes back again…
