Dont explain yourselves... So many of these so called Ren fans have a parasocial relationship aka obsession over him and like to nitpick EVERYTHING. Ren is all about acceptance and lifting people up. Those people are not what Ren or the Renagades are all about. You do you and enjoy the journey! Pause, laugh, talk- its YOUR CHANNEL. They dont like it then there are hundreds of other channels they can watch where people just bod their heads and dont say a word.

Renegade here. Don’t worry about missing the twist at the end, many have. The story is so overwhelming that the mind is reeling by the final lines, making it easy to miss the word “twins”. Ren tells a tragedy in three parts to highlight the epidemic of knife crime and generational domestic violence that has swept the Uk and indeed North America. I thank you for your excellent insights and enthusiasm. At this point in your journey down the Ren rabbit hole, I think it’s time for some happier Ren. I would recommend either Losing It for a taste of Ren’s unique rapping skills, or Back On 74/ Message In A Bottle Retake for more of a singing Ren. Thanks again.

As you said Ren recorded it on the streets of Brighton, where there's a lot of businesses, no residential housing. It would be early hours in the morning when no one is around. Ren said, the police would some times get complaints about a disturbance. The police would arrive, and say, it's only Ren again. and leave, The Brighton police were used to Ren and his late night recordings

You guys are so right, Ren filmed this in an alleyway in Brighton, late at night. (I lived above the shops at the end of Violet’s Tale great to watch!). Some people did call the police when they heard the shouting (esp Screech’s shouting at the police!) when the real police arrived, they found out it was Ren, who they know from his years of street performances & went away happy! Welcome to Rens Universe! Try Money Game 1, 2 & 3 altogether 🙏♥️🙏

Guys, I first came to you thru watching your Sufjan reactions. Love him and you guys. About that time, maybe a bit later, I found Ren, then Ren reactions. I swear, Ren started a whole blow up of people reacting. I became a huge thing. His take is, it helps, him, it helps the reactors get his music out, and other peoples music, ect. Its that concept of rising water, lifts all boats. He is important. And thank you for seeing his rare talent. He does so many various forms of music, but does them all perfectly. Most of his music, is one take live. From his illness thru his late teen years, and alot of his 20's, he was alone in his room, barely able to cope. Music was his lifeline. He was able to perfect his craft, much like a ballet dancer learning all the skills to finally be able to dance the ballet. Ren has been in Canada for some time, doing the stem cell process, and doing other things to restore as much as they can, to him living a normal life. They are rewiring all the damages done to him by the doctors incorrect treatments, for years. God, protect Ren. He has so much to give us, on so many levels.

Agreed. That's what is so cool about watching different reactors. Fans that have seen these performances, often multiple times, are they here to feel self-important about how much they know and to criticize reactors for the way they react? Personally, I like authentic reactions of people's first time experience. Also cool if they want to go back and do a deeper break down of pieces. Whatever works for the reactor but keeps it genuine. The smiles and laughing might seem inappropriate for the story, but can also reflect an appreciation for the creativeness, skill or whatever else that captures the attention of the viewer. I hope you guys don't lose any of your authenticity in trying to live up to some sort of fan ideals. Thank you for the great reaction!

@@aura81295Yep - there are so many kinds of laughter that are NOT about mockery/disdain. A lot of the time when people laugh "at" Ren (like, when the lyrics aren't humourous), they're not laughing at *him* at all. It's their spontaneous reaction to being surprised by his creativity, or by being faced with yet ANOTHER layer of his talents/abilities, or at how he can manage to throw a huge left turn into his storytelling out of nowhere. It's laughter, but it's about expressing admiration, or respect, or incredulity. You're laughing at the absurdity that such an unbelievably talented human *exists,* that he's flown under the radar and isn't anywhere near as well-known as he should be, and you're laughing at yourself for being astonished, almost.

Yeah it’s definitely a lot to take in. It’s worth probably reading through the comments and watching again. You will probably pick up on a lot of things you didn’t the first time. Like, now that you know Jenny and Screech were twins, they were both 14 at the time. So Jenny wearing high heel shoes in the dark on a street she’s walked a thousand times looking to escape might make you wonder wait what is a 14 year old girl doing in that situation and realize it’s actually even darker.

Guys relax, I didn't get it my first time either, it's all good. I loved both your guys commentary, especially about Blake, what an excellent comparison, I've never thought of it that way, but I totally agree. Couple things, no song requests, promise...First, there is absolutely no order you need to consume Ren's music in, other than maybe doing his other trilogy, Money Game, in order, but even that is not that big a deal if ya don't. At the end of the day, it's your channel and your journey down the Ren rabbit hole, you might get some strong opinions on which song to do where, but the vast majority of Renegades will support your decision on which ever songs you choose in which ever order. Second despite the Renegades enthusiasm over the term "Bardcore", it is not something attributed to Ren in anyway, in fact Ren himself has rejected the term to describe his music. While Jenny n Screech is very much in the style of a bard from the middle ages, "bardcore" or tavernwave is a music microgenre and given it's moniker in 2020 during the pandemic lockdowns. In 2017 a youtube artist named Algal the Bard, released a cover of System of a Down's "Toxicity" in the style of medieval music. By 2020 it had a few million views, then a German youtuber Cornelius Link, did something similar with some other rock and pop songs and the trend caught on. It started being referred to as "bardcore", with many youtubers releasing cover songs in medieval music, with some even getting shout outs by the original artists they covered like Wu Tang Clan and Lady Ga Ga.

I know it was filmed in Brighton but the alleyways do look like a film set, the graffiti is so neat and the lack of litter/trash is just bizarre if you know the UK! I feel like Ren really messes with our heads by distracting us from the ever darkening story with the amazing guitar interludes. I loved the Blake comparison and completely concur that Ren is a modern day version. I think the visual component of his work is needed to best appreciate his work. Also, well done on pointing out the sheer complexity of putting it all together, especially as they were all done separately with Violet's tale a couple of years later I believe! I look forward to more Ren, expect the unexpected! Cheers.

This was actually three separate songs building upon the story. Ren eventually put them together, because they belonged together. Make no mistake, he’s meticulous about his work, and he and Sam will have planned each of these segments carefully. Both improved their technique over the time from the first tale to the third, and work as a teem, being nominated for their later work in Money Game 3, (and winning). Thanks for your reaction . He and Samyel actually have a pilot written for a series they want to do for Netflix!. Dark, twisted, musical tales. He needs to finish treatment and his next album before he goes for that. The Renegades are a force of love and support, because that is what Ren inspires. He is all about community and lives by the saying “a rising tide lifts all ships”. Watch his 1m subscribers video on defining success to truly understand the man and why we love him so dearly. The Tales are based upon a police blotter article in a paper Ren read, it was the story of a young prostitute killed by another youth during a mugging, then a responding officer killing the youth. In the article the commanding officer was quoted saying 'they were so young, it's such a shame.' 'It's such a shame' is a phrase Ren uses throughout The Tales. Some seem to miss that Violet's father 'tuck her tight, but never left the room. I'll spare you with the things he did, I'm sure her mother knew.' 'moved out at 16, a semi-detached council flat provided by a welfare scheme...' The only girl who would get a flat like that would be pregnant... she was likely pregnant by her father. Multigenerational trauma and abuse. Stevie calls her a 'little liar' and a 'fucking slut,' this could be because he figured out that she was pregnant before they got together. Levels. These videos were actually made a year apart. Originally it was just the two videos, but the third part was created to bring them back together as a way to understand the origins of the characters, the generational abuse, neglect, and trauma they led to their lives, a repeat of their parents, and the resulting continuing tragedy. Some people see 'The Tales' and think they are recent, or the 3 parts of 'Money Game' and not that they go back 3 or 4 years, and that his back catalog is so big. It is a tale of 'overnight success.' He is obsessive and rehearses endlessly and in filming does take after take, for 'Money Game Part 1' there were issues so they went all night with about 180 takes, for 'The Tales' they were done about 50 times, for Violet's tale there were 54 takes as something wouldn't go just right in the long live one take shot. They had one with rain showers at a very special moment but in review it wasn't as good, but in the used version the plane flying over stirring up the seagulls right when 'Stevie' pauses to see what he did to Violet seems just as special. This is Ren very much in 'Bardcore,' he spent much of his youth going with his parents to renaissance festivals and likely seeing the British pantomime plays, so this kind of performance was well ingrained for him. . . . . . Here is a bit of what I post to Ren reactors: Ren Erin Gill was born in Wales and moved to Brighton UK. Ren's dad got him a small beat up guitar at a flea market when he was 8 years old and Ren took it everywhere, obsessed with learning to play, and write songs, by 13 he spent most of his time learning guitar by slowing down KZread videos, and practicing piano. The only job Ren ever had was at 16 at a Coop and he was fired after throwing sprouts at a coworker. He began busking on the streets of Brighton where he picked up some money and that made him think he could do it for a living. He'd be in two bands that busk in Brighton, you can find YTs of them online, 'Trick The Fox, and 'The Big Push.' He was in school for music at Bath Spa University, and got a contract with Sony, but soon after his undiagnosed Lyme Disease was disabling and he went back to live with his mom in Wales where he spent most of his time in pain in bed with little energy to do anything. Sony agreed to let him out of his contract, he was 19. When he was feeling up to it he wrote volumes of lyrics and worked on his guitar. He says his hard drives must have 1000 songs on them. Part of his misdiagnosis (see 'Sick Boi') was bipolar and ME/CFS, he was put on many drugs including 'Diazepam' (see the video by that name), that made him hallucinate and was in part with the Lyme infection cause of psychosis and a sense of derealization from the drug he hoped would help (see 'Chalk Outlines'). He was certain he wouldn't live to 30 and at times was thinking of giving up (see 'Suic*de'), but maybe his experience with his childhood friend kept that at bay (see 'For Joe'), in trying to find answers when the doctors were making things worse, he got some information from an ME support group that suggested his mental health problems could be due to an infection. He went to a gastroenterologist with his mom and pretended to have a stomach bug that he said antibiotics worked before, he took them and his mental health improved. With that as a clue he got money together to go to an Infectious Disease doctor in Belgium who just reviewing history told him he thought he had Lyme Disease even before the test result came in, and they did show that. This gave Ren hope that he had a path, he began his road of treatment, and about age 25 he was making music again, you can find many old videos of busking on the street, a few collaborations, search under 'The Big Push,' he independently released his first album 'Freckled Angels.' Ren used a found space in the basement of a friends flat for 'Hi Ren' but the landlord came and told them to leave, they begged for more time, but they only managed 4 takes (Ren and his brilliant videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey do dozens of takes as perfectionists, and they have to as they are mostly all live one takes with no cuts or edits! Recall this when you watch 'The Tales' they did 54 takes just on the last segment Violets Tale alone in the Lanes in Brighton). After being kicked out, Ren thought 'Hi Ren' was a disaster, he wouldn't be able to fix as he was off to Canada the following week for a long course of treatment. But after editing the video he showed it to a friend who turn to him and said, 'this is going to change your life.' Ren was in Canada the next week as the number of 'Hi Ren' blew up. 'Ren Reactors' were now a thing on KZread, this drove his album sales when he dropped 'Sick Boi' and it became the number one album in the UK. . . . . . Some of Ren's works fall into a genre of storytelling that's gained the name 'Bardcore,' and one reactor actually mentioned the show 'The Witcher' and the character of 'Jasker.' A Medieval Troubadour or Bard. 'Hi Ren' was the gateway acid trip for most who found him, and then explored the pharmacopoeia of his back catalog as well as the strains of his new releases. 'Hi Ren' I'd put in his 'personal journey - illness path,' while 'The Tales' are more of his social justice sort of work. Here is what I can think of for recommendations: Ren Gill Music journey - his illness path: Hi Ren Sick Boi Crutch Diazepam Depression Chalk Outlines [featuring Chinchilla] How to Be Me [featuring Chinchilla] Cross between his path and his childhood best friend: Freckled Angels Suic*de For Joe Social Justice songs: Dominos The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full) [includes the three parts including Violet's Tale} Money Game Part 1 Money Game Part 2 (Official Lyric Video) Money Game ARG Eden Money Game Part 3 There are some 'fun' videos as well (going to need some to keep from using up all the tissues!): Power Murderer Animal Flow Love Music 1, 2, 3, 4 Girls! Uninvited Money Game Part 3 is his most ambitious production yet, most of every other video was done guerilla style (begging forgiveness rather than ask permission, using found locations - 'Hi Ren' he only managed 4 takes before the landlord kicked them out) They actually had a budget and arranged a venue for it, you can find many 'making of' videos for Money Game Part 3. This video was only released after an elaborate online collaborative puzzle solving game which you can still check out. Each video had a solution that when solved opened a new video with a new puzzle until you got to the 'Prize,' the penultimate video of 'Eden' then Money Game Part 3 dropped. Some of the videos in Money Game ARG sequence are 'Easter Eggs' themselves such as 'what did Stevie do after he attacked Violet?' Ren's 'Money Game ARG (Alternative Reality Game) contest. - - - - - Ren ~ Money Game ARG Playlist (Complete Series) Hexenkind1 27 videos 2,511 views Updated yesterday The whole money game ARG playlist with explanation videos from @RikaShae for the FULL money game EXPERIENCE (kzread.info/head/PLyK6PA3ZIW6ZTuGxd3FCTxAz1naJkQC6J) So yeah, just a tiny bit of a To Do List for catching up with Ren!

Ren is very ingenious; he leaves you small fragments, or simply similarities between, for example, Jenny and her mother Violet (She was silent) that form the character of the characters. There are many details that I missed on the first viewing; but I still enjoyed this masterpiece. I hope you continue to appreciate the creativity and honesty of the modern bard. There are still many surprises left... Great reaction! Thank you

He’s being honing his craft since 10 yrs old, music coming out of every pore. His genre is all his own, he does most things, however has had some strong influencers. Ryan, you were right, I believe they filmed it in Brighton ( where he lives, when not having treatment) at around 3am…and someone did yell at him to “shut the f$&! up!” 😂 So happy you decided to react. Your Community will form around you. Renegades are loyal to Ren, but also loyal to the reactors they choose. Small tip: Renegades will flood you with requests, even appear to hound you. YET: Renegades will also wait and wait for your reactions. In the Ren Rabbit Hole you will also find "Trick the Fox" and "The Big Push" 2 bands Ren has been a part of. Also a whole bushel of Collaborations with other artists. My suggestions include: Ren's thank you 1million subscribers and definition of success letter. Also : his many interviews with reactors, mental health professionals and news reporters. Yes I suppose his little reaction to CNN too. There is also so very much music already dropped and new music already dropping this year (2024). Good Luck! See ya for the next one. Love and Mushy Peas!

My opinion on reactors is that whatever opinion they have it's fine as long as it's fair and respectful. Regarding Ren, it's fantastic to see an independent artist (and I mean artist in its truest sense) have such an incredible impact. Just goes to show that having a fancy record deal isn't the only way forward. Ren's album 'Sick Boi' recently hit no1 in the UK album charts. I admire Ren for sticking to his guns and doing exactly what he feels is right for HIM. You will probably enjoy the many KZread video's of Ren busking with his band 'The Big Push' on the streets of Brighton on the south coast of the UK. I imagine you've had plenty of suggestions!

I agree with you about the "What is this???!!!" because it is something that has not been done before; so as you said creating genre. And I agree the "Tale of Jenny and Screech and Violet's Tale" is a Three Act Shakespearian Tragedy, in the style of the wondering minstrel bard. Ren has self identified his music as bard core, so that is confirmed. This is an ancient style of music; that goes right back through the wondering minstrel bards of the middle ages. The works of Chaucer sung in the Wife of Bath's ale house. And back to the Dark Ages of Anglo Saxon epic poetry of Beowulf, on through the Greek Homeric tales of The Iliad and The Odyssey and the beginning of the Choir. As Ren shows the music acts in part as interlude/intro as well as melodic emphasis and sound effects for the story. This form of story telling probably goes all the way back to Ugg twanging his Bow to woo the Chiefs Daughter. Or to complain about the Chief stealing the meat from his hunt, at the hut of the local Widow Ale Wife, where he and others would congregate to let off steam and tell tales of epic hunts. And then perhaps to draw on the local cave walls the tale of their hunt while singing acting and dancing out their day. And even to this day you see the graffiti on the walls as Ren acts out and performs "The Tales. As a sound engineer I spotted Ren's use of locational reverb as found sound. Something a stone age performer shaman would recognise and that has been shown to have occurred in ancient megalithic architecture and among the few still existing hunter gatherer societies that are studied by anthropologists today. They also got lucky with the Seagulls in part of the song which then was deliberately left in and emphasized in the mix. I think that what was done in the tales calls to that ancient genetic heritage we all have. All of it indicates the intellectual level of the performance production in this piece that makes it true art.

FYI for you guys or my fellow Renegades out there, If you haven't seen it yet, and you have a way to watch VR videos, there's a 360VR live performance of Jenny n Screech on YT. Ren performs it on a makeshift stage, he doesn't follow the route in the 3 videos, but the location, I believe, don't quote me, is the spot during Screech's Tale where he knocks on Patrick's door using his guitar. He sings a bonus song called "London City", that he almost included in the original tales, and reads a personal poem he wrote. It's a brilliant little short performance for about 200 or so people, and with the VR goggles on, you REALLY feel like you're standing front row, just feet from Ren!!

Sorry, not trying to be rude, but that's just not true. "Bardcore" it is not something attributed to Ren in anyway, in fact Ren himself has rejected the term to describe his music.

Definitely not a set. Filmed on on the streets of Brighton, England - it's a seaside town which is why you can hear seagulls in the last section when Violet is beaten by Stevie. All three sections are one shot takes performed live. He has a lapel mike plugged into his phone to record the vocals and his guitar is going into a zoom recorder under his jacket/hospital robe - followed by hours of meticulous mixing. It's absolutely staggering what this guy does.

For something lighter, and a tad autobiographical, watch Ren rap his back story in Power. Low budget, shot just with two iphones, Ren raps and Sam drives and you get a good sense of Ren's talent as a producer (he creates his own beats and mixes all this audio in his videos as well as co-directs them. In a videos like the tales, every movement, every camera angle, its all blocked out and rehearsed, every movement intentional)

Ren has a highly diverse catalogue. You have probably covered the ones that you shouldn't read the lyrics before to prevent spoiling endings.. If you are struggling with the words, and some of his delivery can be very fast to follow, then he normally pins them in the comments. If you are after more story telling delivery then it has to be Money Game parts 1-3. For number 2 do the lyric vid because the live version is an extract. For singing Ren, check out his Band 'The Big Push' - they are all brill but most reactors start with any of his street performances where he is wearing red braces. For rapping Ren, have a gander at 'The Hunger', 'Power', 'Fisher Rap retake', 'Losing It'. For more emotional content any live duet with Chinchilla, eg 'How to be me', 'Chalk outlines', or some of his older content 'Crutch', 'Dominoes', 'Dear God'. What you will notice with Ren is his lyrics are very word dense and beyond the occasional hook they don't repeat. So don't worry if you have to pause quick check the lyrics then go back a bit and restart. Enjoy Ren, I look forward to more of your reactions.

Hi guys!! Please remember that Ren loves reactors. He said he’d never copy strike anyone from using his music, so don’t feel the need to keep track of when to break. He said it in an interview with Knox Hill on Knox’s channel appx 7 months ago? (If you’d rather hear it yourselves). I’m a HUUUGE Taylor Fan, but Ren has definitely grabbed my attention. 1 singer. 1 take. 1 camera. 1 guitar. Freaking awesome. That trumpet sounds he made is so good! This song was a masterpiece. 🎉👏🏻 My guess about the lack of street sounds: I think they may have blocked off the alley for the video. Jenny was just like her mom, Violet. In times of fear from being abused (many ways, at birth by her father and at death by her boyfriend), Violet’s response was to be still and not cause more trouble. Played opossum vs physical pain. Jenny was abused by the same way as Violet. Except that her (unknown) twin brother killed her. Screech was more like his father. Screech never learned how to deal with anxiety or fear. Everything comes out as anger and not verbal communication. Instead of being able to be vulnerable with his girlfriend, he started to call her names and was awful to her. That’s the only way he knows how to act. Ren MADE this video (link at the very bottom) in 2014. It is awful to watch and see him like this. •Please read the description•. He didn’t release this video until he was announcing the release of his album “Hi Ren” about a year ago. He’s been doing so much work to get his health back to where he feels great again. Music got him through that painful decade. I can’t imagine all of the emotions that he went through for a decade feeling like this. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJWg1seheMLJftI.htmlsi=9q6F7VFucgkLzP8S
