Hey brother! Thankyou for reacting to my song! I agree with you, the hospital gown is dehumanising because of its connotations with death, and beyond that It just looks ugly as hell there's a stigma attached to a wheelchair aswel, but as someone who spent years bouncing back between hospitals and too sick to move for many years of my life, rather than push my past into a little box I figured id just flaunt and own that symbolism, with all its negativity cause it feels more empowering

Hi Rollen. It's been a long time since I have seen your channel pop up on my timeline. I am Glad you are reacting to Ren, and I hope you will go down that rabbit hole. Great reaction as usual. I only recently learned about Ren and have gone down this rabbit hole ever since. Many of the subjects, experiences, and emotions expressed in his songs touch me on a very personal level because I can relate to and identify with many of his struggles. A little background on Ren that I gathered from the internet. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue. His illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours a day. Ren was initially diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome. It would take seven years before he was finally correctly diagnosed with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and brain damage. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. He is currently in Canada for more treatments. Ren is an incredible and unique artist; he plays multiple instruments, has great vocal ability, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. From what I read, his videos are generally shot live, all in one take by his friend. I recommend you check out some of his other work. The trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unexpected ending; WATCH THEM IN THE STATED ORDER, as this is the flow of the storyline or just watch “The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full)” which includes “Violet’s Tale at the end. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. I would watch the official live music video. "Chalk Outlines" is one of my favorite songs rights now. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation. As a solo act, Ren performs a range of genres, much of it hip-hop/rap influenced, as well as guitar-based ballads. His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) and any of his performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up) are awesome and well worth checking out, both the busking (street performances) and their live recordings. Ren has impressive vocal and instrumental skills. He is one-of-a-kind and appears mature beyond his years. Ren just released his latest single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next 3-6 months that he expects to be gone. The song that put Ren on everyone's radar over the past month is his song "Hi Ren," which went viral and garnered more than 2 million views in a matter of a couple of weeks. "Sick Boi" is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren"

From the "No, this is not for me" to the "this part I don't like" but shaking your head because Ren is so talented and finally clapping your hands. I had the same trip with Ren's rap. I truly hated rap, but I must admit Ren has won me over and after watching Knox Hill explaining Ren's rap song I understood what I never did before.

The WOO HOO HOO part, I take it as like Paul Simon's line "the music was flowing and blowing my way" and then this detractor voice pops in , he takes that progression all the way to the Demon/Angel archetypes and then resolves the conflict by embracing and incorporating both within this own wholeness. And then the music starts flowing again.

It is all about self acceptance. The good and the bad. The dark and the light. As the great Alan Watts said “the reason why you want to be better is the very reason why you are not “. It’s not about allowing the light. It’s about not sabotaging it because you haven’t dealt with your dark. It’s a firm of clinging. And clinging impairs the dance. Great reaction. I think this is a piece of beautiful and vulnerable performance art (I believe shot in one take) that has the capacity to change the listeners perception of self. Glad it moved you in the end. Shows how we get caught up in our own perceptions and it can be so easy to miss such an important message.

About the references to evil and the Christian version of the Devil etc, I think he's pushing the envelope in this regard and taking the mask off, pointing out that what we call "evil" is really just that dark voice in everyone. We dress up this side of human nature in devil horns because it's easier than admitting that we're all just humans capable of good and bad. He has said in a live stream about this piece that he's not a religious person, but he appreciates the stories. I think he's trying to show us that there's really no such thing as "evil", just humans allowing that dark and destructive internal voice to take over.

  • @adriancorkerball4464

Good take, the whole piece is split up in to sections but it all fits as one, his negative side makes the more compelling arguments telling him to manage expectations and keep perspective, it is his hopeful side that lashes out in denial and is provoked in to admitting his ideas about being a genius, he loses and threatens to kill this negativity, which in turn provokes this side of Ren in to stating how ridiculous it is to talk about killing emotions that conceptualise human beings, listing traits of evil that have been there since Eden. Then Ren hits clarity and forms a redemption arc acknowledging these things exist, but so does the opposite, which some people know as hope. A genius piece of art.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. 9:38 "But that shouldn't be the takeaway" made me rewind 3 times. Also at 9:53 when you talk about he guitar playing and saying that it is imprecise and a bit off, and then say, "I'm not diminishing it", when ironically, most of the "imprecise" parts are straight up diminished chords. I know you didn't mean for that to coincide, but man that was perfect.

I like you, you got a subscriber. I think you’d like Ren as well. I like what you said about the duality. I’m a big existentialist, I think that all of the horrors of history have been committed by insane people who get off on power and destruction. But they required the OK of the populace. I think that the general population see themselves as only good. I think the reason then goes something like this if they are good than anyone who agrees with them is good and that means they cannot do bad because they’re good. Of course that makes anyone who disagrees bad and bad people can’t be good so…. Simplistic, I know, but I’m all about simplifying complex ideas so that they’re more easily understood.

You say that woo hoo hoo hoo hoooo is not your favorite part. I struggled to find meaning in it. He starts the song off with it, and its a bit off taking. Then he finishes with it. What it represents to me is the ends of the pendulum he talks about at the end, kind of like bookends. The pendulum starts on one side and transfers to the other. He has this constant struggle inside his head, and the woo hoo parts are essentially the quotation marks to allow us to hear the inner voices in his head. I think thats what the woo hoo singing is
