When he mentioned CDs I was thinking but you never had to deal with cassettes and the woes , having a pen on hand to put between the cogs in hope you could straighten out the twist, or a record and hold the edges and placing the needle so delicately no grubby fingers. CD's compared were robust :D

LMFAO!! Brotha, my daughter knocked on my door the other night, thinking I was awake, I was out cold with Illmatic on repeat. I had flashbacks of the wicked early 90's after listening to Hip Hop on KZread. I remember listening to this before leaving the East Coast. By the time I settled out in my new neighborhood, Nirvana was everywhere. It happens.

A fun bit of trivia - Rickashae did a video looking into what the censored word in the "rap without Ren" scheme is. Turns out that Ren loves his rabbit hole stuff so much that it's actually taken directly from the comment section of Nas' Halftime on KZread. Someone asks the question "what is rap without Nas" and Ren fit the whole scheme around the most liked comments - hockey without ice, china without rice etc.... What a move! Haha

Nas said once in an interview that Big L was the only rapper to ever make him wonder if he was good enough, when he was still on the come up, after hearing a tape of Big L freestyle at the Apollo. Ren shouted out (RIP) to..... Big, (Craig) Mack, Pac, Lil Peep. "Sleep is the cousin of death" is from "NY State of Mind". Dude that’s fucking funny about the CD. Please don’t even start to talk about a cassette tape or God forbid a track these kids has been off their shoulders no Bluetooth no streaming? Seriously? You’re not serious right? New York State of mind shout out at the end Flippin the bar from the nasty one. I don’t know where you’re from in the US but I live in Nashville now, but I was born and raised in Staten Island and then Jersey until I was 40 so I can’t remember if I bought illmatic 2 or 3 times from wearing that shit out! I can’t remember what year it came out but it had to be early 90s right? I’m pretty sure it was one of the first 10 CDs I ever bought. Off the big whopping author line to rest in peace, big rest in peace Mack, the notorious one and Mack Miller then he says 2Pac then he says little pee. I followed by rest in peace RAP. Now that is a dope rhyme scheme right there paying homage to the greats that paid the way, but left us too soon at the same time! This might be sacrilegious, but I’m gonna say it I think that Renren will reach Nas level before all is said and done. I don’t think he will be a better rapper straight up but as far as all around artist he is already there IMO.

I didn’t know the history or references, but it’s been amazing hearing those who do know catch different references and call back to Nas and his history etc - the Waviest Guy, when Nas was called Kid Wave, and also had something called “Wave Gods” the video of which includes cold snowy streets. My personal fav part is the sales/sails leading to pirates/pie-rats/pied piper (rats to the music), patch (on eye)/patch (music patch), I/eye/aye (captain), hooked (addicted, Captain Hook, pirates again also the rats in Hamlin hooked on the music)…waviest guy (the Nas reference but also pirates on a ship on the waves, plus he turns to nod to the car …waving at them)… I’m sure I missed parts of that too that others have caught - there is the fact he released it on 3/14 - pi day… When I first heard this, I’d listened to Nas’s track first and I though OK, I can catch a few references and then it’s a lot of just having fun and paying tribute to the greats and references to other Ren tracks - but so many layers to this cake! Even at the start - Flaming Sambuka - is a shot…and then he takes a shot. The China without Rice and those lines taken from the comments from fans on the Nas Halftime video…so not just a tribute to Nas but also his fans… How…just how!?
