That’s so interesting because Ren dropped his Sick Boi hip hop album on October 13. It hit #1 in the UK. I didn’t know about Nas Halftime song being on the same date. That’s pretty cool. I don’t know if Ren did that on purpose or if it was just serendipity. Great reaction. I really enjoyed you playing Nas’s song first. Thank you

I worked at a big indie music store in when Illmatic came out (edit - I removed an incorrect date!) & remember it selling like crazy, but I definitely did not appreciate rap at the time. Raising a kid in the 2000s helped me find actual interest in some of the rap I heard through her, but until really recently I haven't gone out and looked for any new-since-1999 music, with my new broadened-appreciation of different genres of music, ya know? Now, I accidentally ran across Ren here on KZread a year ago and loving what he does has introduced me to rap I'd have never otherwise run across, and gain that appreciation for it. When Ren dropped his version of Halftime, I didn't even know if it would be a song I'd recognize because I had been so not into rap back in the day .. but I recognized it immediately, and it brought back HUGE memories of my early days at that music store, being exposed to all kinds of music such a long time before streaming made shit like that so easy. Anyway, I'm loving all the reactors who have such a deep love of rap that they're putting extra video together to help educate those of us coming to this re-take version who don't have the knowledge & understanding to compare what Ren's done versus what Nas created. 👍 So - thank you! I really enjoyed this.

If you peep the way Ren switched the cadence in the retake, then maybe you'll hear what I hear... It's almost an homage to 90's Hip-Hop. It's a little Wu, a little DeLa, of course some Nas, and a little Twista to close out the decade. It's pretty dope.

I really loved this reaction. A lot of Ren fans have been dipping their ears into rap after enjoying his music, and this seems to be rubbing some hip-hop fans the wrong way. I'm glad I'm being introduced to music that I didn’t give much of a chance to when I was younger. Ren's a real genre-bender, not only in his discography, but often in a single song (See "Ocean" or "Seven Sins"). One reactor asked if Ren was a rapper who could rock or a rocker who's trying to rap. I can understand their frustration when the answers came back that it was the wrong question, since Ren has always loved all kinds of music. Being fully independent, he's been able to do whatever he wants. He produces his own beats, plays his own instruments, creates his videos, mixes/masters/sings/raps/beat boxes, etc. My point is that I really appreciate your open and honest reaction, and I love that you played the original first as it was new to me.
