Removing the floor heaters and the floor from my Toyota Coaster

It has been a big week in the bus! I managed to get the floor heaters and all the hoses under the bus removed. And then I pulled up the whole floor!

    I didn't shoot the actual removal of the heaters and hoses underneath the bus because I didn't want to risk getting coolant and dirt on my camera. But I did shoot in detail the final step of disconnecting the hoses and closing off the coolant loop near the engine so if you want to see how I did this it is the second half of the video starting at 12:15

    I got them from Supercheap Auto. I had to use two on each hose because they weren't quite big enough to reach all the way across. But one on either side worked perfectly and so easy to use in a tight space

    I'm in the process pulling up the floor. I thought this was going to be easier than removing the ceiling and insulation....boy was I wrong. The floor is royal pain to get up. You make it all look easy. Pleez tell me everyone else struggles with the floor.

    Video editing makes a lot of things look easy 🤣 I think most people would agree pulling up the floor is a tough job. Also, I have had some previous experience with ripping up floors since I did this in my big bus a while back (see previous videos). THAT floor was a right royal pain in the butt and many a crowbar was thrown in anguish then I can tell you. So for me, after struggling with that floor for a whole week, the coaster floor was a lot easier. Bit still the hardest part of this build so far definitely.

    I have heard of people doing that but it's not something I considered doing myself. I'm not having a built in shower so only need hot water for dishes and a quick wash for me. I have a small electric hot water heater which I'll be able to run off my solar and if there is no sun for days I can just heat water on my metho stove

    There were a few sections of the plywood floor that had water damage and because I had a lot of issues with rust in my first bus, for peace of mind, I wanted to make sure this one was rust free to begin with, so I wanted to get the floor up to have a good look at the frame and treat any rust that was there (and there was some)

    Thank you so much for the brilliant videos, I have loved watching the progress on your coaster conversion so far. When you removed the rear heaters does this mean the bus has no heating now? Or is there a separate heating system for the drivers area? 😀

    Hi Ruth, there is still a heater in the dash at the front so I can use that when I'm driving and I plan on installing a diesel heater for heating when I'm parked up.

  • @AGirlADogandABus

    @AGirlADogandABus

    Жыл бұрын

    It cost me about $700 to buy the marine ply to replace the whole floor. That was two years ago though so I expect it would cost a bit more now as prices of materials, especially timber, have risen a lot since then.

    How did you leave the heater electrical connections under the floor - did you seal them in some way?

  • @AGirlADogandABus

    @AGirlADogandABus

    2 жыл бұрын

    At the moment, I have left all the wiring there. I didn't actually cut any wires to get the heaters out - I simply unplugged them. So under the bus is just the plug connected to the wire that runs to the dash., Just nothing is plugged into it now. I haven't really decided what to do with it yet. I might be getting an autoelectrician to do a few things so maybe will get them to remove all the old heater wiring as well depending on cost.

    this may sound like the dumbest question but you only need to have one hose bend / new bi-pass right, because we cut off both heaters but cut back on all the pipping up to the front near engine? am i thinking correctly?

  • @AGirlADogandABus

    @AGirlADogandABus

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes that is correct. The hoses run from the pipes at the engine, up to the first heater, then onto the rear heater and then back to the engine. It was one big continuous loop going through both heaters so once you have the loop closed at the engine that is all you need :) By the way, there are no dumb questions! Everyone that has ever done a bus conversion had to learn from someone else in the beginning.

    @@amandaalley77 I don't have a link sorry. It was just in a bin with a bunch of other different shaped heater hoses at my local Supercheap Auto. I took a piece of the old heater hose in so I knew what diameter I needed and could compare sizes and just found that one that was close to the right curve I needed. You could probably get something similar from any automotive parts store.

    I changed the hose because the old one was very dirty and worn. Also, I could not get the old hose to bend as tightly as I needed it to without kinking. The new hose was already curved into shape without kinks and it is in much better condition so should last a long time and less chance of leaks on the road.
