    I do have a HUUUGE problem with these videos. It is like showing the video from the 10 hour spray painting, but not the 130 hours of prep, cleanup, etc. 1. Need closeup, close-up, closeup, of wood after blast. Since we can't touch. 2. Need video of cleanup. 3. Need video of post blast prep, from sand, to recall, to prime. 4. Need accounting of media price per 2000 Sq foot., as a $3000 media price tag might spike feasibility. 5. Show the honest prep. I know one stray bead, hitting a window will break the window. Done it. 6. A serious discussion of cedar bleeding with deep pits, even if properly washed and primed afterwards. 6. The houses here, stripped in 1988, have zero peeling, today, in 2018- thanks to deep pits that the paint can grab. Most vinyl Siding done in the 80s has been ripped off and redone in this time span, due to warping and loosing nails. However, expect 40 square foot per gallon on your first coat of stain/paint etc.

    How did the blaster do on the soft cedar? Did you get the "sandblasting effect where it removed the soft pulp making the surface very grainy where it would have to be sanded afterwards? Could you blast painted plywood soffits without damaging the wood? We paid a power washer guy to do this with a trailer 5000psi unit a while back and the result was worse then the before job appearance.

  • @plymouthrockdustlessblasti7710

    @plymouthrockdustlessblasti7710

    9 жыл бұрын

    All I can say is overall the client was happy & pleased with the results. It did not leave it completely smooth as you would expect when the cedar was new, but using water and crushed glass was a great deal less aggressive than any other method in comparison - and we only used roughly about 70 psi. The good thing about this system is that we can regulate both the output air pressure and the media/water flow. Plywood soffits can be done but it may result in slight roughness, however couple coats of paint should be able to hide any blemish.

    Some homes might need some sanding after, depending on the initial build up of paint from the start. We hadn't followed up on all jobs but many of the homeowners leave the shingles as is after blasting. With lead paint, we try to contain as much as possible, using 6 mil poly and keep in mind even though we are using water & crushed glass, most of the water vaporizes on impact leaving the debris on the ground sludgy.

    Hi Sammy. Basically when removing contaminants/lead, we use the same process. What is different is that by using water with media (usually crushed glass) this will keep the dust more centralized, basically eliminating it because of the water mix and drop to the ground because of the media is mixed with the paint. Due to the weight and gravity being heavy, it will just keep them from traveling in the air. You will get particles of course that will travel due to the high pressure, and some mist, but the dust itself is eliminated.

    Jeff Stumbaugh I have the strong pressure washer that you're talking about (10 GPM, 3,500 PSI, using a 45° nozzle), it damages the wood usually, it leaves the wood all hairy, so you'll have to sand it after it dries. If you have to insist on paint that doesn't flake off, it digs a hole in the wood as soon as it comes off and also all around the hard to get off paint spots. the wood gets extremely soft once it's wet. If someone knows of a method or trick to get the paint off from wood with a pressure washer without damaging the wood, please let us know. Note: I have the same problem with my small 5.5 GPM, 3,600 PSI pressure washer also using a 45° nozzle.

    'Dustless Blasting' is one of the only methods approved for use in this process. EPA's concern is with the 'Airborne Dust' when removing Lead or Asbestos. Many governments are turning to this process for removal of these contaminants. You can do more research by searching dustless blasting EPA lead/asbestos. Hope this helps.

  • @testacleas
    @testacleas7 жыл бұрын

    How do you to do this while still following all of the EPA lead laws? I've looked into several ways of stripping paint off my house and every time I run into frustrating rules about putting plastic down, containing dust, contaminated water, and other lead contaminated materials.

  • @plymouthrockdustlessblasti7710

    @plymouthrockdustlessblasti7710

    7 жыл бұрын

    EPA laws are pretty strict. When we strip homes yes we do contain the area as much as possible, using 6 ml poly. The main issue the EPA is concerned about is 'dust'. By using water with our system, the dust is virtually eliminated & contained immediately. Water mixed with media is heavy, therefore all the paint mixed with water & media drops to the ground. After the process has been completed, the lead based material needs to be rolled up and disposed of properly.

    Even more concern than EPA is OSHA. You CANNOT put a respirator on a worker without first having a physicians approval to don a respirator, respirator fit test pre work blood lead testing. At minimum workers must have a two-hour lead awareness training. Some states require 8 to 24 lead training and a state lead abatement license. Many folks say, sure my equipment will remove lead paint and proceed without following OSHA and EPA regs. The "dustless" system should include laying poly to capture debris, water run off and wind break. Do it safe or don't do it!

    That is correct. Most of the water however will vaporize on impact and mix with the material being removed from the home and that media, in this case Crushed Glass. When this happens, most of what you see on the ground is contained in a slug material so we don't need to worry about run off, but in any event, the ground is contained using heavy poly. Due to the use of water with the media in the hopper, once the pressure hits the surface the heavy weight drops to the ground and does not linger in the air - air quality was recently tested on a large exterior building with lead at the Newport Naval Base with no harm to surrounding air - See pics on FB to get a grasp of the project.

    Ruffled just a bit, but far cleaner and smoother than any other process, depending on how old the wood is and how long the paint has been on the shingles. Our experience is that some shingles/clapboard (couple at most) over time may become soft due to paint and water absorption, but overall, we've never had a client who has complained about the end process. They've always come back to be astonished of the before and afters! We have many close up pics on our sites to see the end result...

    Got to get lead off eventually, on all houses. Even siding over, you must deal with it 20 to 40 years later, when the Siding starts to warp, nails loosen. Best to strip in a controlled manner... Also, years of lead gasoline, and sun peeling, has taken a toll on all existing soil.

  • @plymouthrockdustlessblasti7710

    @plymouthrockdustlessblasti7710

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I've heard others having the same issue. Problem is when you pressure wash you are not removing the contaminants from the wood, so trying to lay paint over that would not allow it to soak in. Using the 'Dustless Blasting' method however, not only removes the paint but also the contaminants while etching the wood enough to allow the paint/stain to soak into the wood. In either case, you must allow the wood to weather dry for some time before painting.

    pool chlorine and simple green concentrate or all natural/free laundry detergent. chlorine is 2x as strong and makes it on the house stronger. The soap is mostly just a "wetter" to make it cling longer. I only used tsp to kill the heavy moss on my roof when I bought my house. you could also use wet and forget for roofs. probably safer. I like to stray from using any strong or funny chemicals to avoid killing plants or weird reactions. spray let sit till everything browns out or disappears, rinse off. Try to avoid letting it dry and presoak and rinse all the plants. If your washer has a strong mixing ratio the siding will easily rinse clean.

    Depending on the homeowners request, most of the jobs we do, the homeowner had planned on repainting the trim, so they were not concerned about removing some of the paint on the trim, facia, soffit, etc. Many actually want us to remove as much as possible on the trim saving the painter time and the homeowner $$. All jobs are geared to what the client requests.

    Even more concern than EPA is OSHA. You CANNOT put a respirator on a worker without first having a physicians written approval to don a respirator, respirator fit test and pre-work blood lead testing. At minimum workers must also have a two-hour lead awareness training. Some states require formal 8 to 24 hour lead training and a state lead abatement license. EPA requires all contractors who work around lead to attend a 10-hour EPA lead class. If you cannot follow the minimum EPA & OSHA regulations you should not be in the paint removal business. Many folks say, sure my equipment will remove lead paint and proceed without following OSHA and EPA regs. The "dustless" system should include laying poly to capture debris, water run off, wind break and proper disposal. Who wants to spread debris on a clients house and lawn where kids may play? Do it safe or don't do it!

    It's most likely because its painted...your not supposed to use paint with cedar. Your really supposed to use opaque stain (which looks like paint but absorbs into the wood). If painted it needs a oil based primer....and not many painters use oil based products anymore but oil based will also absorb into the wood similar to stain.
