Painting my 101 Year Old House

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Restoring the cedar siding and exterior pine wood trim on a 101 year old house. Full restoration of original wood siding with scraping, sanding, priming, and painting. Replaced rotten sections of trim and tightened everything back up. Very labor intensive, but worth it in the end.

Great Video, This explanation of house painting is exact. The steps you have taken are exactly what I did 20 years ago and still is holding up. I was younger then and now turning 73 I will be refreshing some sections this summer. Lots of work, but worth it.. Thanks for the refresher course. Old lady in MA

Wow awesome job Katie. I have done a repair and paint on an 110 year old house and I can really appreciated the time and hard work it takes to do a job to a high standard. And don't those old homes look so smart when freshly painted. Also I discovered that keeping up the cleaning maintenance was a great help keeping the house looking cared for. I don't think I would ever recommended using power washers on the old homes unless super low pressure. Great job.

Super helpful to watch your process and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing! My house is a 135 year old Queen Anne Victorian and has recently had the old vinyl siding removed. My biggest challenge in thinking about painting it myself is reaching the highest gables. Glad to see you used a man lift! You’ve given me a good dose of motivation.

  • @olsenkated

I bet your house is gorgeous! And maybe a diamond in the rough if it has just been uncovered. I used to be afraid of heights, now I just respect them. The man lift was so much easier on the body. And my feet are thankful! Standing on a ladder all day is definitely hard on the feet - they aren’t destined to stand on such a small surface. Best of luck on your project - I would love to see photos! They simply don’t build houses like they used to.

You guys really did a great job and I am glad your boyfriend came to help because this is one of the most difficult jobs you can do. I just started my house today and I am doing it alone. The last time the house was painted was 18 years ago after my fathers death. My Mom and I worked and painted every single day and it took about 3 months. Two coats of primer and two coats of paint, so in reality we painted this house 4 times, UGH!!! We did a good job for it to last this long however!! Congratulations and best wishes to you and your new home!

Katie, what a fantastic job you did on this! I grew up in Oshkosh so as soon as I saw the Kwik Trip I knew this had to be Wisco :) I am doing the same thing starting this fall and continuing through next year. We have a 1950's built home that was originally sided with cedar siding 12" reveal. That was covered in the 1960s with aluminum siding... and I've been pulling that off and finding the siding still in very good to decent shape. I plan on doing exactly what you have done. Sadly there are no Menards in Upstate NY, where I live now. I'll be using Sherwin WIlliams paint and an oil-based primer too. Go Packers and Go Brewers!

Katie, You inspired me 😀, as I have been thinking of painting the exterior of our home. I am a 60 yr old women who is a DIY kind of gal. I saw our neighbor paint the exterior of his home on his own. He did the prep work, and paint work by sections. He is a single man who works full time, so he did if on weekends. It was a long process but the results were so amazing. Again your an inspiration Katie....great job👍 One day at a time!

@@weirdmatter That is so sweet of you to say! I think so many people have forgotten what it is to take pride in what they do and own. Just because I can't afford to buy a move in ready, no maintenance required house, doesn't mean that I can't have a nice home to live in. It was a fun process to restore the outside of this old home. And quite affordable. But I am so glad to be finishing up with the massive project that I signed up for haha. It was a little time consuming.

Im surprised no use of a sprayer when it came to painting?! just goes on so much faster. Probably would have been worth it in the long run to save time. But I’ve also never used one and didn’t want to mess it up. I’m definitely not an experienced painter. Just a DIY gal with time on my hands, an old house, and a low budget. I got lucky and most of the eaves have been updated to metal soffits.
