    Part one and two videos are very informative. I have followed ALL of Spencer's wallpaper removal techniques. My results were successful with little drywall damage. I wasn't expecting a successful outcome because I didn't properly prepare the walls before wallpapering. Patience and love is what's needed for this DIY project. Next I'm going to try my hand at skim coating.

Most of the top layer came off of the sheet rock in the whole bathroom. It has been a nightmare. I had told my husband they did not seal it before hand and that is why this looks this way. Couple questions: if drying time isn't a concern can I use just the Weldbond to seal the drywall both before and after skim coating? Also Weldbond recommends a ratio of 1 part to 5 parts water. I totally respect what you say no doubt! But I have been a painter for over 30 years doing mainly high end work for 20 of the 30 years, In Australia the paints could be different, but in cases like this a good coat of sealer is sufficient for the areas where the paper face has came off, for the left over glue I personally use a sponge with a scourer on it with warm water, the other thing that I would always suggest is to let the walls naturally dry,The zinsser is a great product but not necessarily user friendly for the handyman and as you mentioned a lot more costly, so In short let the substrate dry after you have removed the glue with either a sponge/scourer apply a sealer coat allow to dry fill all required areas where needed with base coat, sand in between lightly and apply top coat, sand all top coat apply all filled areas with sealer, finish with two coats of low sheen 👌

    Hey Spencer, appreciate the video - I've used the techniques in this video to remove most vinyl and grasscloth wallpaper with no problem. However, I'm removing vinyl wallpaper in my foyer and like most good quality vinyl, the top layer comes off in beautiful full sheets. However, the tan paper backing still does not come easily with water no matter how much I wet it. This paper backing is different than what I've seen before/what you've shown - it doesn't tear when pulled, it just breaks off. It's also not drywall brown paper because after scraping the backing while wet, I can see/feel the drywall behind it. Any direction you could point me in to removing it would be great.

    Well sir, first and foremost, I appreciate your passion. I have be redoing the walls throughout my entire house, and have found the gauntlet of wallpaper. Easy removal smooth walled, to think, stubborn border paper on textured wall. The thick, multi layered paper has given me the fits! I've been given all the advice in the world, and after watching this video I believe that: 1. I'm not using nearly enough water. 2. I'm not being nearly as patient as is required. I posses both. A good well, and patience. However it seems I'm not using either one to it's full potential. My walls were not sealed by the previous owner when they installed their 3 layers of wallpaper in places. For reference, I'd been trying with a 32oz spray bottle on the entire room. A new 2 gallon sprayer will be in my possession and utilized, with much more patience. I have no further questions, as I indeed watched the entire video(s). I just wanted to thank you, I'll put away my(the following is a list of tools from "advice"), metal scraper, heat gun, chemical wallpaper remover, tiger claw, and whatever else I've left out. I'm curious if you've ever used vinegar? I find it as a good go to cleaner, or sticker remover. Thanks for your passion and willingness to teach others, so one day we can teach.

How to remove from ceiling without rips? I watched your entire video. I'm only 5'3" 😂! Remove from ceiling? Spray water and let dry. Don't over saturate your walls. For me, it can get soft. Let me just change it because I thought you were hanging wallpaper; go ahead and put shellac which is an alcohol base primer on it. This will allow you to paint it now since all of the glue will be sealed by the shellac; but now you might have a rough surface, if you do, give it a thin skim coat, if you don’t have a rough surface, go ahead and paint it; but, if you had to skim coat, then go ahead and put Gardz Over your skim coat, wait till it dries and then put your favorite paint on it because you’re all set!

    we hired some painters and for an extra $100 they said they could remove the ugly wallpaper from our bathroom (the owner of the painting co. said this). He personally started it and got frustrated and literally walked out & went home! Leaving his 2 assistants to finish. They tried, but gouged a lot of the walls. I handed them a spray bottle with 1/2 ammonia & 1/2 alcohol + a dash if dawn dish soap. They told me later they were able to get all of it off thanks to that solution spray. They still gouged the wall though.

    I've removed hundreds of rolls and the very 1st thing I do is a small space in the corner BEFORE wetting the walls. IF it looks anything like this job, I heavily sand the entire wall with 80 grit sandpaper so the water can penetrate the vinyl coating which is mostly waterproof. Mix water with DIF remover, let it soak 2 or 3 times and BINGO. Much easier.

    @@spencercolgan there’s dustless sanders now Spencer. There’s also a special tool to score just the drywall paper allowing the water to penetrate deeper into the paper. Put a humidifier into the room you seek to strip wallpaper from. As you spray water on the wallpaper, the water will be able to soak in more completely and down to the adhesive without leaching into the air. In short...make that room a tropical mess!

    The house we bought has painted wallpaper. It’s this weird mesh wallpaper. I already stripped three layers in another room with these videos. So my question: what do I have to do with painted wallpaper?

  • @spencercolgan

    @spencercolgan

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don’t know what mesh wallpaper is but somehow I suspect that you mean Grass Cloth. Here’s what you’re going to do: 1. Do not fear damaging your walls. Get out a sharp knife and slice it diagonally long slices and then take your knife and slice it in the opposite diagonal direction… Do this in an area of about 3‘ x 3‘. Then take a 6 inch taping knife and trying to get the edge of a taping knife underneath these strips that you have sliced and start prying them off of the wall.

    Slice deeply if you’re removing multiple layers of wallpper. Don’t worry about damage to walls. Plaster can easily repair any damage you make.
