Remove Stuck Bathroom Sink Drain Flange - Spinning

Removal of flange or collar on a bathroom sink drain that are stuck or spinning. 3 ways to remove the flange from the corroded drain body assembly.
When replacing a sink drain, often the top of the sink's drain aka collar or flange will be stuck on the top of the drain. If you have a dremel or a tool with a cutting wheel, it's best just to cut the drain above the pivot rod nut and then remove the flange from the top of the sink. If the retaining nut on the bottom of the sink's drain hasn't been loosened, sometimes if that nut is held with a wrench and the drain is spun, the flange will break loose. The flange in the video was there for about 33 years and was fused to the drain body.
There is a Know How Now video showing how to replace a bathroom sink faucet and also one to replace the drain.

Hugely helpful video. Now I will go give your suggestions a try (hoping I don't have to do the last resort cutting option!). One sink on the vanity was a breeze to get the drain assembly out. This other one is just stuck.

Thanks, tried everything else on a 45+ year old drain from the 1970s; the Dremel and 2 cut-off wheels made relatively quick work of the soft metal pipe (with eye protection & a vacuum standing by for cleanup). Made a mental note to never allow a lever-style sink drain in the house again.

You are welcome. When my house was built in 1952 a nail was driven into a lead drain pipe, and it finally started to leak on my watch. I bought a Dremel to cut the pipe out of a really tight space and then managed to custom bend a piece of PVC pipe to replace that section. I thought I'd never use the dremel again. Not only did it (and my small arms/hands - sometimes there are advantages to be a small female) save me from paying someone to tear apart the kitchen, but has saved me so many times.

I had to use a Dremel to cut then hammered it out. Once the pipe was below the sink hole use a regular screwdriver to tap the pipe out. Hitting lightly one side then the other.

Tried that on one sink, and it worked without "cutting with Dremel" bit. Unfortunately it did not work on second sink and there's no easy way to cut the drain with Dremel because idiots who installed that sink used very narrow ceramic pedestal instead of traditional vanity cabinet... I'll eventually remove it, but I beg anyone who might be installing new sinks or renovating old ones - for the love of God (or anything you believe in), stop using ceramic sink pedestals and lever-style drain stoppers, people! At the very least use spring-loaded "pop-up" drain stoppers, they're VERY easy to install and remove (and service the spring-loaded part, which easily unscrews from the top).

You are welcome. My experience is that if the flange/drain has been installed for a long time, odds are good it has to be cut out. I have a video that shows how to install a drain too. Best wishes for your repair. kzread.info/head/PLvce66kQTjJTz0cqcI_HDnaLbNLDONCVP

Hi and thanks. If I only need to replace the flange which is the round piece sitting on the sink, can i do it without unscrew the drain pipe and gasket below the sink. The existing flange have several holes on its side.

It's easy to remove the trap from the drain body. See the beginning of my video (link is below) on how to replace a metal pop-up drain. If the flange has not been in place for a long time, you might be able to get it loose using the first methods in this video. If it's been in place a long time, odds are it will not come loose and you will have to cut it as shown in this video and replace the drain. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5-flbZmobe8o84.htmlsi=jkWZyUA8zQHpzMVn

Thanks, is there a tool to tuck into the flange holes and turn the flange anti clockwise to unscrew the flange. I see my flange has 3 holes . It is Delta’s. I don’t have 2 wrenches to hold and turn the assembly structure below sink showing in your video. I need to replace my rusty flange.

I don't know of any special tool. Maybe a screwdriver will work. You might just buy a dremel tool and cut it. Harbor Freight probably has a cheap version dremel tool.

Unfortunately, none of these worked for me. I am about to use two pipe wrenches (one on the nut and one on the drain tube). Channel locks couldn't hold the drain tube. 30 years of corrosion. Sigh

@@Know-How-Now Haven't got back to it yet. But will bring the wrenches and a dremel with metal cutting disk. I know the dremel will work but if I don't have to play with sparks and flying disc dust, I won't. ;)
