Ever accidentally melt plastic in the dishwasher? Here is a way you get get it off! Cheap and effective. Plus it gives you a reason to clean your dishwasher.
Anything that cleans, does not clean itself people! Clean your stuff.

What about plastic that had melted directly on the heating element itself?

That gets tough. While the exact method of operation varies depending on the dishwasher's design, most modern-day models feature a heavy-gauge wire with a ceramic coating that's attached to a couple different brackets. As the electrical current passes through it, the wire generates heat. We do not want to damage that coating. Try the hot water, the polish remover to soften it up, and ideally plastic putty knife to get it off. IF you have use metal, be very careful. Another way you could try is just do the heat cycle on your dish washer, do that for about 5 minutes, open it up and try to remove with the plastic putty knife. Hopefully this helps and good luck!
Are you supposed to unplug or turn the power supply off? I had this happen last night a plastic lid fell down and melted right in the heating element where the clip looking thing is.

Hi there! I would say unplugging is not always realistic. I would rather go to the breaker box and turn off power to the dishwasher. The heating element works by running electricity through the thick wire that creates resistance and the by product is heat. I would avoid metal to metal contact and focus on using the hot water or acetone, and maybe a plastic scraper. If there is too much plastic to remove, replacing that element might be the next route. The plastic and or stainless steel shouldn't be harmed by the acetone, but this is another reason I run it once after cleaning empty just to make sure it is cleared out. Thanks for the comment!
Ugh yes...a plastic spatula and it STINKS... I hope we can get the smell out...no more plastic in dishwasher!

Try putting some vinegar in the tub and an upright cup, run on an energy saver mode without the heating element and that should help a ton. Glad the video helped!
