Remove Intake Manifold To Find Leaking Head Gasket - Toyota Rav4
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I show you how I removed the intake manifold on a 2004 Toyota Rav4 2.4 4cyl so we could get a better look at a coolant leak. As always please refer to your shop manual for the proper instructions and repair procedure.

Sir, you do a really good job of giving detail instructions on disassembly for the task at hand. I especially like your patience and seeking info when coming to a problem. I do a little wrenching myself and I like working with guys like you.
I'm watching them out of order but still enjoying the way you explain everything without being condescending and it feels like you are talking to the person watching. I know these are older videos but I'm thoroughly enjoying them. Thank you Mr O.
Your biggest asset is your patience. Truly amazing!

My Biggest Respect for all Mechanics outthere , because they have to remember where everything and every single bolt goes back where is supposed to go, and doing it right. 👏
Any video that rips apart an engine (or intake in this case) is great! Combine that with it being a SMA video.. then well, you have hit the top of the mountain boys and girls.
The look of disappointment as you describe a diaper is gold.
I've seen a lot of your videos but this is the first Toyota I've seen with problems. My wife's 2009 Corolla has never gone under the knife. Interior looks like new.
1999 toyota ranv coolant leak rear of engine hope it ain't head gasket. Already working on 1995 honda odyssey with timing belt failure. Doing all . Valves, gasket kit and timing belt kit.head at shop. You and others taught me well. Greatly appreciated especially now that I'm retired on fixed income
This has changed my mind on ever owning a Toyota
I was considering buying a 2005 Rav 4. Now I can make a more informed decision. You are very patient.
Really a wonderful video, thanks! I thought I'd mention the Intake Manifolds on 2004 RAV4's (and maybe other years) are known to go bad internally with the result being a louder than usual engine at various RPM's. No squealing or anything like that, no check engine lights, no loss of performance. Over time, the engine starts sounding more like an old lawn mower than an automobile engine. It happens so gradually that you don't notice until it gets particularly bad at lower RPM's. A good way to diagnose is with a mechanic's stethoscope from the bottom. Another characteristic is the louder "rattle" will peak at about 1600 or 1700 RPM's then fade away again, but even that doesn't happen every start. As for that awful bolt nearest the battery, that will take the longest to remove and reinstall. I had to disconnect the hot lead from the battery and move the cabling back to have enough clearance for a socket wrench. This is something to be careful about because you don't want to short the positive lead to ground, otherwise you'll be making a special trip to the Toyota dealer for a new fuse block. To prevent this, disconnect both battery terminals temporarily. When reinstalling the intake bolt, I recommend duct taping it into position (small piece of tape) so when you go to tighten, all you have to do is push straight back with the socket. I failed to do this the first time and lost the bolt down in the engine compartment. That ended up being 30 minutes wasted trying to locate the bolt. Oh, by the way, I purchased an aftermarket Dorman intake manifold from Amazon for about $165 as I recall. No problems and the car is nice and quiet like new.
Had the same problem with a customer's 05 RAV a couple of years ago. The car had about 70,000 miles. For them it was time to buy a new car(a Subaru Outback). They offered me the RAV for what the dealer was giving them. The dealer didn't know about the leak. I declined and now after watching you I know I made the right decision!

Lol smart man :)
Here's a quick trick to help get the intake out without removing the fuel rail. Disconnect the motor mount bolt and use a strap from back of motor to front of frame and roll the engine forward an inch or so. Then pull out the intake.
always wanted a rav 4. this video cured that want
Have to do the intake manifold and this actually helps a lot
Im a certified youtube journeyman now. Tnx Eric O
Found these, gonna run thru the set!! Nice ob finding the leak!!
If you ever do anymore. Pull the intake, exhaust with the head. As an assembly. It so much easier other then getting the knock sensor and harness bolts back in there from the rear.
difficult car to work on, but you did it, well done...
Wow! I have never done any of these, but they seem a pain for a 4 cylinder. You really got me hooked on your channel Dr O. My wife was like : " What the heck are you doing on YT all evening ? " I'm like : " I'm watching Dr O! " She's like : " I never knew Dr OZ is on YT! " LOOOL! Then she's like : " Well,at least you're home watching YT and not out cheating on me! " LOOOL! Haha don't let your wife see me and fall in love haha no jk man. Well I am glad I can bring you some form of entertainment :) and stop you from having an affair lol
Did one that was locked up .. replaced the motor with a recycled motor took three days because had to disassemble the lower half to turn crank which was a pisser. . To get the flywheel to turn .. some cussing happened. .lol good job Eric even if I'm 4 yrs late .
super vid my brother. keep up the good work. real appreciation here :)
Pressure test and patience would have revealed that leak. The coolant has to go somewhere and even with other small external leaks the "diaper" would eventually reach saturation and become obvious. Under pressure in a cold engine a good thermal imager would catch it also. Not many places coolant could have been escaping in that scenario. Cooling system leak dye also. Just some thoughts... love your vids btw 😎
Thank you for the info,,,n great job! I just subscribed to your chanel 👍 Looking forward to more good content.
I know this video is old but i was reading the comments amd by god why do some people try and sit there and be a keyboard warrior and go back amd forth with Mr. O when he clearly knows what he is doing . whew
The wife just bought a new Rav4 with 1.8L . She got the 7yr. 100k mile warranty. Probably trade it in before the warranty expires.
Wow, huge job but very cool! I have 01 rav 2 rad changes (rad gasket) but I see tiny lowering of overflow bottle ...engine starts but a little long crank time also on start races to 2k idle but slows right down ...maybe gasket gremlins? Thanx for max video!
Nice video. Definitely helped me some
The foam looks like it serves as a support for the intake aswell, it is plastic so I think it can flex a lot more than other materials and possibly crack easily without support
Great Video, thanks for sharing!
And here I thought I had it rough with the intake manifold on my 1996 toyota tacoma which has the engine essentially rotated 90 degrees. Much easier to access. After I watched the whole video I saw it's not exactly the same. My manifold has an upper, and lower section
would you consider doing a video demonstrating how to bench bleed a 4 port master cylinder and how to install it?
That Rav4 rack and pinion looks like a real PITA to get to when it needs replaced !!

Do you have a video on diagnosing a coolant leak on a v6 rav4. Mine is a 2007 and I noticed the smell today coming from the engine bay. The resevoir was empty and I could see an area of moisture as well as more liquid than normal coming from unusual areas on the skid plate.
It's hard to assume if head gasket is leaking especially on tight space could be small crack on the engine block i encountered once
In my Haynes manual in the first paragraph it says to remove the fuel rake.
Thanks for the video.
I remember seeing a trick where in this case where you just need that HAIR of clearance on FWD cars, you can rock the car front and back in park to rock the engine and trans front and back as the parking pawl hits the stop and tries to rotate the drivetrain as it's dragged or pushed by the rolling car. Put your hand or foot on the parking brake, rock the car back and forth really violently, and then when the engine had jerked and leaned far away from the area you need clearance in, slam that parking brake on to hold the chassis in place and therefore hold the drivetrain in place torqued away from your parts. 👍 It'll give ya that 1/2" you need, works even better on total piles that have torn every motor mount asunder and there's nothing but hope and dreams keeping the lump connected to the chassis. 😸😸😸
I am going to half to do this to a 2002 Camry 2.4 liter, can you give me the part number for the TAP Set and did it come with enough inserts or did you purchase separate, then that metal guide plate, did it come with the tap-set or did you make it? Most Appreciative!!!
Hello...i would like to know if the head gasket toyota engine rav4 1AZ FE will fit the 1 AZFSE?
I work on the service side of toyota. And those 2AZ-FE motors are notorious for oil consumption. I would recommend a rebuild if your gonna do that with the timing chain cover reseal. And yes the water pump sucks in those. After 60k you'll start to see coolant residue under the shaft... And after 90k oil leak on the timing chain cover, where the head meets the block. And about 120k is when the oil consumption starts. Sometimes 60k.... Good luck on the vehicle.

Alex Vega I hope you're saving up for a rebuild. I would.
I see that you got the intake manifold out without having to remove the cowl and what the cowl bolts to. Might save me a little work, thnx. Would this be the same for the 2007 Rav?
.... just wondering Eric if once that manifold was off, plug all the disconnected coolant lines and openings then pressurize the cooling system to 5 or 8 lbs with your handpump thingy in the rad fill hole .... make a leak or seep easier to see ?
Eric O I'm struggling to watch your videos. I'm a big fan of yours and love watching them. The problem is, I watch them on my TV. The advert starts part way through, then when the video commences, it automatically jumps to the next video. I've contacted KZread many times with no reply. I was wondering if you had the same complain from other subscriber's?
May not have applied here but I often find raising the engine slightly helps with removing the intake or whatever when I get in that situation where clearance is a problem

Oh yeah for sure but this being AWD it's locked in there pretty good...
Is there any issue with removing the foam "diaper" and not using it anymore? I had always thought it was bad to have that there as it seems it may be the cause of the bolts stripping. The foam insulates the aluminum block thus keeping the heat retained in it. Since the opposing side doesn't even have one, the heat dispersion is uneven. This perhaps causes the aluminum to fatigue thus making the bolts strip. I have a 2009 camry with this motor, and from what I've read, they "fixed" this problem by making the headbolts 10mm longer. Not really a fix in my opinion....
Its amazing how people dont take care of their cars and let cra just sit in the engine bay, the channels for water run off, and then wonder why things happen. id be interested in seeing what the inside of this poor rav4 looks like. GROSS by my standards. hahahaha. my 2013 s60 is pristine and when it goes to dealer for anything, they cant believe how new it looks and still smells. Excellent video Mr Mechanic!! details and very nice disassembly process. you should have been a surgeon. you need work gloves by the way?? 😊
hey i have 99 nissan altima with intake manifold bad gasket. what you think hpw much is it going to cost me for fix any guess..?
I'll be interested to see what I see when I tear into it. Evidently these have a problem stripping out the 3 rear head bolt holes in the block. Sounds like a party to me!

I guess this giant foam piece is to insulate block heat from the intake, providing cooler air to the engine. And we all know: cooler air=more O2=more power
The insulator insulates! It keeps the cheapo plastic intake from melting and buffers the viberation so the cheapo plastic intake won't crack and break off.
Hopefully the newer "2018" Rav4 is a little cleaner to take apart. While I'm hoping maybe I'll never have a problem with the intake or the head gasket.
Nice job dude...man, those snap on flex head ratchets are the cat's meow, got like 20 of them. I didn't like the comfort grips at first but they have certainly grown on me. I have a hammer head 3/8dr on the way, we will see how it goes.
@SouthMainAuto
9 жыл бұрын
They are the bees knees that's for sure. I got myself a pile of snappy ratchets my self. Felt the same way about the comfort grips too, but they do seem to work ok. The earlier ones with the fat handles use to snap in half but now they switched to these skinny ones and they hold up good. Congrats on the hammer head, you'll love it!
How many miles were on this car? My sister had an '02 that had some major antifreeze leaks.
good vid

It's a heat insulator supposed to go to store some of the heat off the block
what is the green knob next to the intake for??
When i was watching you take that intake off in my head i was like remove the torque mount and push that car back a little in park will make the motor move forword
My toyota hilux was worked on to replace the coolant bypass hose. The intake manifold was removed and since then the truck performance reduced. What might be the problem here? Is it a must to replace the manifold gasket after opening it? How do I tell if there's a leak?
No, Doctor O, the wire mesh is to keep the squirrels and mice inside. The rodents are what makes the vehicle go. And I hope these head gasket jobs pay at least eight hours. I needed to remove the intake manifold on my 2009 CR-V and I discovered it had to come apart in two pieces to clear the radiator. Well, there are five bolts holding the inner plastic/nylon piece to the back of the metal intake. Once I figured that out by blindly feeling around in the back it came out easily. Assembly was a piece of cake even though I had to put it back together blindly. Once you know how it comes apart, putting it back together goes pretty darn quick.
You will need that insulator diaper thing. Well not right away but it keeps the heat off that plastic intake. After a while if it doesn't get put back on the intake will get heat soaked, bc brittle & crack. But it wouldn't happen for a while depending how often you drive it. Might last for ever or might end up cracking the intake in a few months.
Do i need to jack up my vehicle to get to all the bolts?

ryan wirling Yep actually I own one. It is about 15 years old. Still works great :)
This happened on my old 04 camry too.
I am trying to make some room to remove the timing chain tensioner without removing the intake manifold but the wiring harness is on the way. On 21:00, that plastic part attached to a metal bracket on the right side that's holding the wiring harness, is that on their with a fastener or does is just slide on and off of that bracket? Trying to determine if I can simply pry it off of the bracket or not. Thanks!

2:00 - I could have really done with those hose pliers last weekend.
rav4 are my faverat
What brand of sockets do you use?
@2:03 those pliers you used, if you grind off the tips of them they make great plastic clip removers.
I think the sponge is just insurance to help support the intake, maybe from vibrating and cracking
can someone give me se advise on how to remove the manifold ?the gasket is sealed tight and can't move it at all .how can I remove it with out damaging it
My head gasket failed on a 2005 Toyota RAV4 169k miles. How much to fix this please.
I seen that before removing the fuel rail and injectors you actually pulled the intake back far enough to see the gasket, so I'm wondering if I can get away with not removing the fuel rail and pulling it back far enough to replace the gasket?
