Remove Chain Saw Cut - Beautiful Walnut Wood Turning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Been saving this chunk of Walnut that was cut from a huge trunk area.
It had a larger chain saw kerf that looked as though it would limit the diameter I could make. Watch and see how I save it.

The maple insert would have been a nice addition, BUT doing what you did made for one BEAUTIFUL bowl. Walnut is beautiful anyway, but you have elevated this piece to a whole new level. Gorgeous turning Gary!

Thank you Doug. The maple strip was an option. Only to not lose any diameter. I could not break up the flow of the grain in this one. So after jointing the edge and looked at the match there was no question. On a very straight grained piece of walnut yes it would work. I was thinking about you as I glued it together. Was pretty sure you would like it. Merry Christmas my friend. Gary

Thanks so much Ralph. For sure I was not going to put the maple or any other wood in there just to keep it 1/2 inch wider. Some who did not know the story would be wondering why in heck did I cut a piece just to put a strip of maple in it. This wood speaks for itself and speaks pretty loud at that. Now to look for the other pieces I saved after cutting up the stump. Thanks for watching, Gary

THIS is why I love walnut, Great save! I'm not opposed to splicing different woods together... the results can be very beautiful. In this case, with the grain so closely matched from just removing a chainsaw kerf, I really think that you made the right choice.

Thank You Gary... Walnut is always WONDERFUL!!! I use to have a huge Japanese Black Walnut in my backyard. I was able to save some of the wood for block planes but I regret to say most of the heart wood was lost due to my young age, ability & knowledge to keep/store the majority of that beautiful tree.... The glue joint worked out perfectly fine but a strip of Maple would have been equally fine with a different look. Just beautiful .... TM

I wasn’t sure about your choice at first, I’ve filled chainsaw cuts with epoxy in the past which has turned out very nice but that bowl when finished was magnificent and you can’t see the join at all. Great choice gary. It’s a pity you lost diameter and height whilst turning however, who cares when you see finished product. I was a little surprised to see you using carbide tools in your turning, you are such a traditionalist with your turning and could have easily used parting tools for same result. I really enjoy your videos gary. Keep them coming. The variety and techniques used are great.

Thank you very much Greg. I am sure the right color of epoxy could work. I only use carbide when it feels like the right place. My carbide tool is one I made the handle and bar for. Extra long and extra strong. On the uneven edge I felt it was the best to use. Especially with my left wrist bothering me. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks Bill. That could be an option. To be the wonder grain pattern that was in this one deserved a chance to flow from one side to the other. And it worked perfectly. Had this been a more plain piece of wood I most likely would have put an accent piece in there. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, I think you did the right thing. I think a smaller bowl, or bowls, would have been just as beautiful because that's a beautiful piece of wood but I like the bigger bowl and I like that it's all Walnut. I think the Maple would have distracted from its beauty. Maple is a good accent for Walnut but I don't think I would have liked it for this project, personally.

Just beautiful Gary! What an amazing piece of wood. It made a lovely bowl. I was hoping you would fill the saw kerf with something instead of cutting and gluing. Also I would have been tempted to leave the bowl rim uneven (aka Phil), and finish it by hand after. I doubt if either of these choices would have had the result you ended up with though. Cheers, Rick

Thanks Rick. I have it a lot of thought on filling the cut. But wanted to cut it and hold it together then choose. The grain match as perfect as you could want and I think it looks so much better all Walnut. Now if it was a Cherry slab i would have filled that with Walnut. Thanks for watching, Gary
