    I have a 71 f100 4x4 shortbox & I had a axle walk out on me so I put a new bearing on & it did it again in like 20 miles. So I bought another bearing & put it on & I think I only got 10 miles on that one. So I put the axle on the bench and spun it & ever so small I could see a wobble. It was bent. So knowing I need a new axle but didn't have one I welded the retaining ring on just so I could get by until I got a new axle. But I didn't slobber weld it on like that one. I put 4 solid tachs around it and was good. Never had a problem since. Just now getting around to ordering axles & that was 4 yrs ago!

    You do not know what you are going to find, until you take it apart. Who would go thru the trouble to weld the retainer, instead of just replacing it and doing it correctly? I think I would just repair your axles and put in the new bearings and seals. Then you know what you have is repaired correctly. Those drum brakes will work just fine, for another 80 years. I wish you and your family a wonderful new year. That trunk is going to be quite the driver when your finished. I think it will end up show car quality at least. That's a scary sight to see with the bearing just sloppy on the axle shaft like that. I did the 9" in my galaxie a few months ago and those bearings pressed on so tight they were jumping and squaking going on, same with the retaining ring using sunnen pressing lubricant to boot. I got the retaining rings off of mine with just a chisel, beat a groove into one side, go to the other side and beat another groove into it then it looses tension and it would walk it's way off, I had to cut the old bearings off of mine. Not a very fun job.

  • @joealbert7773

    @joealbert7773

    2 жыл бұрын

    A lot of times you can take a chisel and make a good mark on the retaining ring. Then just keep moving around the ring making marks. It will expand the retainer and it will come off.

    That's why I like GMC over a ford. Im saying this at the same time have a Ford in my driveway. They make a sleeve that you use red lock tite and a sleeve you tap on to fix that axle. Had to fix a few in my life. Glad you found it before. Tire and axle come off . truck slams to the pavement . you loose your brakes but you do come to a stop from dragging your rear end and bumper. Every ford i have owned ones a year I jack the back tires off the ground grab the tires and see if i get up down an in an out slop. If does. Time to fix. I don't know why I keep buying Fords. 😂
