Remove and Replace AC Compressor Clutch and Bearing Without Removing Refrigerant or Compressor
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
If your car's AC compressor is making noise, the clutch/pulley bearing likely needs to be replace. On my 1995 Toyota Camry, we replaced the AC compressor clutch bearing without discharging the refrigerant from the compressor or removing the AC compressor from the car. We removed the compressor mounting bolts and repositioned the compressor just enough to be able to remove the pressure plate and pulley to replace the clutch bearing. We also tested the AC compressor magnetic coil and clutch assembly before we remounted the AC compressor to the car.

Great video, I've never seen anyone torque the mounting bolts on an AC compressor before. You ladies are thorough! lol One small tip. Some compressors/alternators have dowel pins to align them to the engine. Cleaning them off and applying anti seeze to the holes will help prevent them from getting stuck and being difficult to remove in the future.

Great video. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. It cleared a few things I did not know where to start: using the pliers to lock the pressure plate. Others activate the magnetic clutch from the dashboard, unscrew the 10 mm bolt, turn it off and continue. However, that approach only works if the magnet is good, mine was damaged so your approach works best. One comment though: when using the extractor, it is very important to use the cup to support the extractor bolt on the compressor case, and not on the compressor shaft. Putting axial pressure on the compressor shaft "could/might" damage the compressor. If the pulley comes out easily, likely no issue, but if the pulley is very stuck the extra pressure is not good for the shaft.

Thank you, Juan, and thank you for the valuable info you added. It helps us all. Happy New Year!
Thank you for this so informative video. I was able to replace the AC compressor clutch without the need to bring to the shop to remove the refrigerant. My 1997 Camry has rusted bolts that I could not remove the lower bolt of the thermostat housing. I was afraid to force it because before doing it, I broke the adjusting bolt of the fan belt due to so much rust. I moved the compressor to the best position I could aware of not to let the wirings to the magnetic coil rub with the thermostat housing. Because I have no one to hold the tongue and plier while removing the 10mm center bolt, I used a vice grip and clamped tight a portion of the pressure plate to prevent it from rotating. I positioned its handle against the wall (see the photo). By hammering the handle of the torque wrench, I was able to remove the center bolt. The other harder one was the removal and replacement of the snap ring because I could not see clearly the holes where I should place the tool. My cellphone camera guided me to that. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN, MY CAR IS COOL AGAIN.

Thank you, Pro choice, for the kind words. I'm sorry to hear the bolt snapped on you. That's tough to deal with. If it had snapped on us, I would have gone to Pick-n-Pull, a salvage yard, and just pulled an entire AC compressor, rebuilt it (internal seals too) and put it on the car.
A few years ago I removed an AC clutch shim to repair my 1998 Frontier AC without unbolting or removing the compressor (AC clutch was slipping, intermittently). I didn't even need to remove the AC belt !!!
Great job.
