When I was rebuilding VW Beetles to put my way through college. I was able to remove the mostly 40 horse engines in 10 minutes or less. I would put on Peter Frampton - "Do you feel like we Do" song as a timer. I used a four jack stands and one floor jack. Never had to move the distributor. I used a bolt that fit in the gas line hose and clamped it. Yes, laughed because I was thinking he for the heater connections. Brought memories back.

So, you don't need to touch the distributer to remove the engine? I would prefer not to if it's not necessary.

@@SpanishWorld-zu2nm My VW's were also in the 60s model, normally 1964 built later in the year, not a 1964 built with 1963 left-over parts. The distributor was the larger cap version with a thin vacuum advanced. Where in the video the distributor is what they call a .009 and has a larger vacuum advanced. But I still didn't have to move or remove the distributor, even on my 72 I had. You can mark the distributor, but there are alignment marks also for Top Dead Center if you turn it. I removed the cooling hoses, wiring and engine tin like in the video. Now, I did remove later on the muffler part first only to make more room and easier to remove the engine, but that adds time in removing it. Well worth doing that, I think. Then I wiggled the engine out away from the transmission shaft and lowed the engine down. Now, I had already placed my jack stands higher in the rear of the car and lower on the front end. That way, I was already to slide it sideways between the wheel and fender to get it out from under the car.

I once saw a technician change the clutch on a Beetle in 7.3 minutes. It was a demonstration in the Wolfsburg factory for dealers. 1966. He did not even seem to rush! Impressive

It's 2:45 in the morning and I came across your effort. Oh Man - fantastic video. Learned driving in a 1960's Beetle in the streets of Berlin, Germany. We had two of them in the family, reliable with zero problems and almost zero heat - but a little vase on the dashboard. Extremely funny when you think about it. We young guys floored it on the Autobahn ... purely hillarious. All these funny memories got revived by your video. I'm in my 70's now but recently sitting down in one of these Beetles felt like slipping into an old, well worn, comfortable shoe. Thanks for your video. Good Luck in all you do.

You have just filmed the story of my life! I am about to help my son pull the engine from his 1972 Beetle. I did it several times decades ago when I had a van and a Karman Ghia. BTW I owned a mid 1960s Mini in England in the 1970s. Mine had the smaller engine. I think it was less than 1000cc. It still had plenty of power for me. It was white with red interior. It was a great car. For some unknown reason the ladies loved it, some kind of magic spell.

This reminds me of when my Dad helped me take out a beetle engine for the first time 45 yrs ago and what fun we had getting the motor out took far longer than this.

I had a '63 camper. Didn't even need jacks. There's a body panel held in with 4 bolts and the rear bumper likewise. Slide a milk crate under the engine and slide it out 15 minutes. Gapping the valves was easier with the engine out so for regular tune ups out came the engine. I would often do this at the coin car wash and clean the engine too. Per John Muir I used a #2 pencil to plug the fuel line.

Nice! Like the magnetic parts container. My dad gave me a mint 69 Beetle that needs love. One thin is he had someone re-do the motor and paint. The motor guy took off the rubber seals around the motor so it looks like I need to wrestle getting my motor out to install new rubber seals! Thanks for the video.

The record for a VW beetle engine pull is 1 min. 4 sec. A driving, running beetle, remove engine, pull 1 meter away from vehicle, reinstall and drive away

I did this the other day, but the bolt that goes through the starter just span round and round. I obviously have an aftermarket starter without the little catch that holds the bolt head still. That turned it onto a 2 man job. My exhaust pipe came off in my hands when I pulled it also! Hahaha! BTW I've never had to move the dizzy when removing an engine.

As a further thought. Anyone saying they can remove a beetle engine in ten minutes or so. Set up the situation for it to be filmed. So we can all see and learn how to do the same. Without help of course.! This, I have to see.!

Yeah. They're that simple. I had a few Bugs and one Bus back in the 70's as a kid. I dropped the engines out of Bugs in about 14 minutes. The bus in 12. It only takes one jack for the Bus. You just undo the undoable bits like the Bug, support the engine, then push the bus forward a couple inches, using small jack adjustments to keep the threads from getting mauled till it clears the four bolts. After that , pull the engine straight back and out. Ridiculously good memories with that Bus. Too bad you can't restore a Type 1 or 2 VW anymore with just chump change.

Years ago in Australia I was told the record for removing a Beetle engine was just over 4 minutes. In a competition. Having had to take out my own, I cut holes behind the back seat to undo the top 2 bolts, and cut out the rear panel so I needn't lift the car up. And from a standing start, there was no way in the world could I get it out in 10 minutes. So can only conclude that those who did, must have had help. The clutch-cable alone would use up 2 minutes. Never mind the 4 engine bolts.!

There’s a few more things to disconnect; take lots of pictures! You’ll also have to remove the inspection cover from the bottom of the bellhousing and unbolt the flex plate from the torque converter. I think it’s four bolts? Little ones that an odd thread as I recall. I’ve only done one and it’s been a long time. It’s not too much different, there’s just a few more things to deal with.

Yes, they’re actually the transmission mounts. There’s two of them bolted to the bellhousing. You have to support the transmission and remove the cradle the mounts are bolted to from the chassis.

You cut the part out where you literally dropped the motor. Mine got hung up t0o, and as I continued to lower the jack, it dropped at least 8 inches. ALSO, you did not show the part where you tilted the motor backwards and skidded it out on its rear heater boxes scarring the garage floor 🤣🤣🤣

Now you know why you jack up the REAR of the car before detaching the engine. In VW meets contests they had an engine out in under 3 minutes, nothing broken either.

Back in the 70's when I used to do this, I would just put two tires under the transaxle and the body and it was high enough to remove the engine. For about15 to 20 years all I drove were beetles. Now knowing what I know about what junk they are, I would never ride, or allow a loved one to ride in one of these suicide machines. Just saying from experience.....................'mike
