Removable Rear Apron (Valance) -- 1973 VW Super Beetle Subaru Swap

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Making the rear apron (or valance) removable on a VW Beetle makes engine repairs and replacement much easier.
Watch me struggle removing my rear apron to install my Subaru engine swap. Engine going in will be a hybrid EJ251/EJ255

Always wondered why the factory did not just make the rear apron a bolt in panel.

Use a spotweld drill bit..cuts a circle around anchor of weld.

Thanks for the suggestion! The bits for spot welds are definitely the best option, I was just being cheap

Looks like your apron was replaced at one time like mine. My car had been rear ended and whoever reinstalled it welded the piss out of it. Otherwise it's a few spot welds and it's out.

Yes that would make a lot of sense! Definitely didn’t expect the factory to put so many spot and seam welds for a simple panel

I feel your pain. I ended just taking the cut off wheel to it.

Sorry but I haven’t gotten to that yet. Video for the coolant system should be out next weekend and then I will be moving on to sheet metal work. Thanks for watching!

It really isn't all that bad, just requires patience. Mine also had damage from the previous owner so was out of shape and weakened from the start. Good Luck!
