Thanks, Mark, another great video. For those that don't know the SpeakON connectors are from the pro audio world and are designed to be connected/disconnected many times. The XT60H connector (used for the turn-on signal wire) is from the RC hobby world and is primarily used on batteries so again it is designed to be connected/disconnected many times.

This video couldn't have come at a better time! Thank you for the thousandth time! I need my spare tire so this is perfect.

1:30 and/or to make more cargo room, if installed into someone else's vehicle (parent, spouse, etc), or for those who own two vehicles but one car audio system and want to enjoy system in both rides from time to time. Many reasons!!

This is exactly what I was looking to do! I built a box for my beater SUV and sometimes haul large stuff in the back so taking the sub out was a must. The only things I did different was used standard binding posts instead of the speakon connector as I don't plan to be swapping out the amp. I also 3d printed brackets for all the pieces including the XT60 connector. I find some of the XT60's to be a little snug sometimes and I'm sure with bumping around with time that glue might pop off. I also designed an RCA connector bracket that is similar to your block but it cups around the connector to further grip it and keep it from twisting. Love your videos!

Talk about a blast from the past. Saw many installs like that back in the 90's. ^^

i have been doing this for atleast 25 years, with every sub/amp and hoodboard in every car i owned (around 20) good to see i’m not the only one

I did this in my van, though I did it differently, so I'll offer that option here for others. The reason I did the portable setup for it is that when I'm carrying 4x8 sheetrock or plywood, I'll take the setup out quickly, carry the materials I need, then can easily reconnect the setup when done. Instead of using that type of disconnect you used, I instead used a pair of L21-30 connections, with the male leads on the box side, and the female on the vehicle side. This removes the need for having to cover it to protect from shorting, because the pins are recessed. SInce L21 sockets are 4-pin, I split up the power and ground to put half of each to a pair of pins, ensuring that half of the grounded side is using the ground pin that's designated in the L21 plug. For the RCAs, I used 4-pin trailer wiring harness set, which disconnects quickly and easily, and again only leaving the negative side from one of the RCAs as the exposed pin from the harness. The sub box/amp setup has an Audio Control LCi2 on it, which has auto-on (they call it "GTO") so no need for the remote power connection. So I only require 2 connections to remove the entire thing, and since it uses a twist-lock on the power plug, I don't have any worries about it coming disconnected when I don't want it to do so.

Wow its like when you need extra space for cargo its nice to know how easy to get the. Sub in and out very nice hands up for that built thanks for the info 👍👍👍👍

For installs like this, check out the AMASS XT60L connector. Same basic idea, but it's laying down and has two mounting tabs for screws.

Great to switch from your daily work day driver to your weekend cruiser .......

How did you know I needed this video??? I have a 2008 BMW M6 with a current build in the trunk. I need to remove it because the battery, fuses, and electronics are in the trunk. Upon re-installing the sub box and amps, I want to make some quick disconnects to simply the process of removal for car serviceability in the future. Thank you.

Neutrik makes 90-degree connectors so there wire could run parallel to the enclosure. Worked great on my home sub build to keep cable stress down.

If you wanted a way to secure the box in the vehicle use a couple of those quarter-turn cam lock latches that they used to secure commercial PA cabinets together with because those would only leave two small brackets in the vehicle once you remove the box

This is nice for a boat application I’m building a box for 4 8s that I want to be able to remove when the boat is parked

i used to use those rca connectors for a dj set up in a club. reliability was a real concern, as they usually wouldn't last long. I kept a lot of them in stock so that when it failed i always had a spare.

Have just done this in my 2011 Kia Grand Carnival (Sedona in the USA) with a prefab box, kenwood 12" and kicker zx200.2, all second hand. The amp has RCA turn on so only had to run power, ground and a hi/low converter that I tapped into the rear speakers. There's a large door on one of the rear panels that has the jack stored behind it, when the sub is removed the wiring will be stored in there. I didn't have the tools to make a mounting pad for the power connection so I just put the box mounted wires in an Anderson trailer adapter. Last thing I need to do is add mounting points for the box both with the third row seats up and also when they're down creating a flat rear floor.

Looks great and very convenient. Downside to this application is that it appears perfectly "steal-able"

The point is to not keep it in the vehicle.

When mounting the amp on the box (not recommended) should add either rubber mounts or at minimum an additional layer of wood, to reduce vibrations. The vibrations from the sub may cause damage to the circuitry. I had problems with an Alpine amp several times I'd get it repaired then a few months later again this was recommended to me by the guy that continued to repair it.

I purchased a new concept 4 gauge wiring kit for my subs. And I have to say I don’t notice any difference still pounds nice and hard. And all I had before was a cheap $15 boss wiring harness kit. I thought I upgrade it to the new concepts hoping for more of a bang and more power still seems to sound the same but the wire was really good priced was only 30 bucks purchased and shipped to my door so I can’t complain I’m happy.

How did you make the nice clean round bevels on the small white PVC blocks?

I've always been hyper paranoid about this (and if you're using a relay this doesn't matter at the amp), but I've always fused my remote turn on wires. A small glass fuse holder would make an acceptable remote turn-on disconnect at the box. You may have to buy 2 of them so you can use one as parts to make a cap/fuse retainer for when you take the equipment out though. Just a thought...

Neutrik connectors rock! They are used in pro gear eg concert speakers so they can be plugged and unplugged safely 100s of times. I would make this setup with just one neutrik connector from the car, including power, signal and remote turn on as they have multi pin models too. Look up Neutrik speakOn range (8-pin)

For the little yellow connectors. I bought some and they can be hard to pull out and push in. I would like to put a little grease on the metal connectors in side the plug. What type of grease would be appropriate?

Do you have any video that explains alternative ways to connect RCA and remote connections on a factory radio without removing the dash? Like using a RCA converter that connects to the back speakers and doesn’t need the remote 12v. Some people sometimes also only hook up to one side of the speaker. Do you have any video that properly explains when and why this can and cannot be done.

Great video; was wondering how to do the signal wire as I don't like any of the quick disconnects that have the signal wire as part of the connector. BUT ... have to ask - where do I get that wire holder that you're using at 11:16 into the video? Very clever and yes, I could make one, but like the fact that it's slotted for different gauges. I have to have one!

Deutch connector with bulkhead would be great for that sub box, those bigger connectors look like a golf cart charging plug

This applies to my circumstance perfectly. Obviously, you want the sub enclosure secure while in the car so it doesn't move about while driving. If you bolt the enclosure down, it's not so easy to remove. Do you have a method of securing the sub enclosure for this application where easy removal is desired?

Both my amps hidden but the huge subwoofer box time to time needs to be removed when i have to use my estate boot. What should i look for only to use to disconect the subwoofer box? Must be 10-12awg wire friendly 🤗 thank you!!!

How did you install that female speakon piece? Did you run the wires from the sub into that piece?

I was actually looking at doing this in my wrangler as a removable replacement for the back seat since it doesn't have much room at all and I need to make use as much of it as possible when i do need it.

Mark, serious question. Why have a quick disconnect on the speakers if the amp is never coming off the box? Seemed like an extra step for no other reason than looking cool. Correct me if I'm wrong? I would have done it if the amp and box were separate. 🤔 Right?

I personally like the NVX XQDC4 disconnect when doing audio installs on motorcycles and want a quick and easy disconnect that doesn't take up much space.

Any issues with these pieces melting? Saw reviews on amazon and some of them melted. If anything happens, the amp fuse should blow before anything melts, correct?

I have seen 4 pin (speakon) connectors where 2 pins were used for audio signal from the amplifier and 2 for remote turn on return (the speakon connector in the box has a bridge between 2 connectors). No speaker, no amp turn on.

Speakon connectors are cool. So are Powercon connectors. The cool thing about them is that you can replace the 12v accessory jack and panel mount them in the empty accessory hole (like most suvs have today in the cargo area) and have the connection point to the sub blend in with factory panels.

If you're using an aftermarket head unit with a maestro it's as simple as going into the menus of the head unit and turning the stock sub back on

How much power is lost with all those connections? if any. Genuinely curious.

That should be closer to the battery in the engine bay.

So if I don’t do all of this and just unplug my amp/subs is that alright? Or will the wires that are still connected to battery and alternator still need to be removed as well?

If the AMP is permanently mounted to the car and all I need to do is disconnect the box may I do it with the car turned off or do I need to disconnect the battery and then unplug it?

I had this kind of setup with box of two subs and its not durable. Amp doesn’t stay fix for long because of vibration. I even placed foam at the back of amp and even then the amp got loose after a few days

10:38 you apparently never tried Pioneers new version of that... When you connect pair that they provide for you, you would find it really hard to disconnect them, if you try connecting you own store bought ones to them, they hold on firmly... And yes I have tried a screwdriver to jimmy them out but that still doesn't work, it's a very good connection and may require wirecutters.

My personal thing for years, because it was my daily driver, I've mounted the amp to the box...then used 220 twistlock to run power, ground and signal, boom in to and out with a plug.... but those plugs are $50 each...

When reconing a speaker do we have to buy a specific or the exact cone or can we buy the same size but different souround hight cone

EMF made a video explaining this in detail. I bought a cone to recone a subwoofer i have and it blew instantly because it wasn’t the correct cone. Then again the tensile leads weren’t sewn into the spider

Its best if possible to get the specific one for your subwoofer obviously. If they dont make a kit for your sub then that can put a damper on things!! They make a sort of "one size fits all" type re-cone kits you can find online but the most important thing you would want to pay attention two would be if it was a single or dual voice coil, what the impedance is 2 ohm 4 ohm.....etc and most important the voice coil size. 3 inch or 2.5 inch whatever size you have so it will fit your sub motor. Matching or getting better quality the best you can like sewn on leds if your sub has that or if it has 2 spiders top and a bottom. All that is what you want to primarily focus on not so much the surround or stuff like that. Usually if you get a nice beefy re-cone with good parts that stuff is already nice and thick and well built. Sorry im just rambling on here! LoL. Hope that helped some at least!!!! Lol

I’m taking my sub out of my car because I need space for a day and I took the subwoofer out and disconnected the wires from the sub to the amp. Should I leave the amp as is or is it a fire hazard?

I used that power disconnect on my amp. It’s a great solution to pull out my sub and amp when I need to get to my spare tire. Only takes a few seconds. Can you recommend any quick box tie down solutions for the same purpose? I’m just using bungee cord but would like something cleaner.

Maybe mount 2 right angle brackets on the box then use wing nut style bolts that can be taken out by hand without any wrenches or tools etc.

Heyy idk if you read comments of old videos but make a 3d printed plug that disconnects and reconnects all together in one go ..it'll be satisfying to see it work

That's a lot of work for no real benefit. Plus for the high current parts(power) you need a solid connection with the metal parts. Using a poor connection can literally burn your car to the ground.

I really like this, wish I would of had this done in my Jeep.

Im going to do this for my 74 beetle, but i dont want a head unit just a Bluetooth amp.

I still wanted that sub test, see vibration and hear them longer.

I kinda have a noob question.... If anyone could help me..... A fused distribution block, It’s a 0 gauge in to 4 gauge out ... do I use the fuse the power wire is rated for or Whatever the amp is fused at? For example: one of my amps has 3 x 40 , so that’s 120 total, do I use a 120 fuse? Or whatever the 4 gauge wire is rated at ?

OFC 4g is good to 150A max. No more than 17ft.

@@jonanderson4474 I wouldn't go with wingnuts. Every insurance company I've had has told me that any equipment permanently mounted to the car is covered. Wingnuts imply exactly the opposite of "permanent".

@@jonanderson4474 how about hinges instead of L brackets, when placed upside down and countersunk you will still have a flat storage space instead of metal brackets sticking out. Or did you mean having them permanently on the box and bolt into the car?

2010 equinox and yes thank you brother I will use this a my set up tool. I have a fishing kayak and yes its 100 lbs you heard right 100 lbs. I was having issues installing/removal of my system but now never again thanks alot best one I seen so far but one question. Should I get a scorpion circuit breaker at the battery so there are no sparks when I do removal? Hmmmmmm I mean there will be a live feed to the power cable at all times and the kayak will be damp or wet so I'm going with the scorpion let me know what you think thanks again

You asked about a single connector of the yellow one. There is non that I know of of that style. But there is a connector that is called XT150, which is 6mm single, should be enough :-)

After repairing my own Alpine PDX M6, and seeing how over 90% of a modern amp's board uses surface mount parts, I'd never recommend mounting any amp directly on a box. I'd go an extra step beyond to see if the amp could be mounted on an isolator or some type of dampening material to reduce vibrations.

Can't we combine all three power, RCA and remote into a single plug? That way we will only have to connect/ disconnect one plug.

When you use high quality RCA wires this isn't nearly as big a problem as people make it out to be. No noise, no problem. The problem is most people use really poor quality RCA's, not even twisted pair, and have all sorts of noise.

the speakon connection in this scenario doesn't make much sense. It's bulky, and if the whole box is coming out... it provides no additional quick release to get the box out of the car. I'd say wire ferrals would be suffice with standard screw terminals or even mini lugs. The speakon connection would make more sense if the amp wasn't mounted on the box itself.

Can you disconnect the sub and turn the car back on?
