REMOTE STUDIO: Using SRT with vMix and PTZOptics Cameras

Ойын-сауық

The Secure Reliable Transport protocol - SRT - has quickly become one of the core technologies used in modern video infrastructures. While SRT itself is content agnostic at a technical level, it’s use enables IP-based video and audio streams to reliably traverse otherwise unreliable networks like the Internet - essential for remote/cloud-based productions.
On today’s show, we’ll go over SRT in detail, and cover how to connect multiple remote PTZOptics cameras directly as inputs in a vMix Preset - without using any computers on the remote side.

37:22 - How to add a remote SRT input in vMix 38:49 - How to add more than one incoming stream through one PORT using Stream ID - I didn't know you could do this, this is invaluable!

Could this setup be done with the ATEM TV Studio HD8 instead of Vmix??

Hi @leproductionsny - I know the HD8 has a Remote Streaming Bridge that lets you send an RTMP stream from a BMD camera to the ATEM. I don’t know if this will work with any general RTMP STREAM. If it can, the PTZOptics cameras do support a native RTMP stream out. If not, I believe you could feed the camera into a Web Presenter HD on the remote end which would be able to bridge back to the ATEM. As with SRT, all of the BMD options will require port forwarding.

With multiple srt inputs, how can you sync them on the studio side?

  • @StreamingAlchemy

Synchronizing multiple SRT streams will require cooperation between the sending and receiving SRT end points. Typically, it is done by inserting a Network Time Protocol timestamp into all of the remote SRT feeds, then using that timestamp to 'align' all of these feeds on the receiving end before playing them out. This synchronization across feeds isn't a standard SRT feature. It is available from several software and hardware vendors as part of their SRT solutions. Thanks for watching! -j

Hi @Hassanakora - We use Shure E215 headphones plugged in to a Shure MV7 Microphone. They receive audio via Dante with a mix of production audio (Videos/LiveToAir Guests/etc) and an IFB from the control room. Thank for watching! -j

it would have been helpfull, not to just talk about, but also show from a completely different network. Also how to controle the cameras from the remote studio, would have been very usefull. We e.g. have some of ptz optics cameras. We want to install them in different places. The location guy just has to turn the power on. After that, we receive the SRT signal in our studio and we can controle the cameras with our joystick controller. How to do this? That would be nice to know.

Sorry we weren’t set up across multiple remote networks for this show. That said, the core setup concepts we covered would apply by changing the IP’s and Ports. If you want to control remote cameras you will need to port forward at each location to connect from your PTZ Controller to each camera directly. Once this is set up, it would be as simple as turning on the cameras. Hope this helps.

@@StreamingAlchemy Unfortunately not. We have now set up everything locally, released ports for camera and PC as in the example here on 8001 in the Fritzbox and set camera to caller and pc to listener with the public ip. We get no picture in vMix. Although we still have a slightly older version of the PTZ optics camera, it was already capable of SRT. However, we also get no image via the rtmp link. However, the camera image is displayed in the camera's browser window. I have no idea where the error occurs.

I want to send my church live stream directly to a TV channel for live coverage so I want to use vmix srt for sending the feed to them at the studio

Hi @princekumahamezugbe4944 - SRT is a great way to do that - especially if you are using the internet or another unreliable network to transmit your service. The TV station you are working with should be able to provide the details to connect with their SRT ingest point, which you can then set up in vMix. Thanks for watching! -j
