Remix + Upscale: IT'S MY LIFE by TALK TALK - 40th Anniversary Remaster
Музыка
Writer-Producer CJ Simpson aka Perifractic presents a 40th-anniversary tribute remix and remaster of Talk Talk's "It's My Life", creating a live performance "that never was", by blending in live audio parts, and AI upscaled visuals, to honour the band's authentic spirit and aversion to miming, in a version that aligns more closely with perhaps their original artistic intention for this classic yet mimed performance - and all to reintroduce the iconic song to a new generation.

©️ This remix is presented for educational purposes as a transformative piece under Fair Use law. All playback revenue goes from KZread to the original songwriters and publishers listed below.
✍️ The producer writes: “Talk Talk’s It’s My Life (January 1984) was written by their indefinable frontman Mark Hollis (who sadly passed away in 2019 at just 64), and Tim Friese-Green (still making groundbreaking music today - www.timfriesegreene.co.uk). IMHO it is one of the most precious songs ever recorded. For many who grew up in the 80s it played a part in defining our early years, and with it's 40th anniversary approaching, a tribute felt right. 🎂
📺 The remixed audio plays along to a modest AI upscale using www.topazlabs.com/Topaz-Video... of what I think is Talk Talk’s best public performance • Talk Talk - It's My Li... The original music video famously featured Hollis with his mouth sealed shut throughout; a protest against artists miming during "live" performances. How sad therefore that their most fun TV performance features them miming due to insufficient TV studio capabilities on the day. 🤐
🎙️ To resolve this and create the best of both worlds I blended in parts of Hollis’s wondrous, melancholy live vocals - often indistinguishable from his studio work - plus live acoustic guitar melodies and live synth pads, all AI separated from actually live performances, to lend the single and this fascinating 1984 appearance on Italy’s Popcorn show that feeling of actually being “live” itself. 🎸
✇ For the audio I went back to the original 24-track studio masters digitised recently by an anonymous engineer • TALK TALK - It's my li... adding prominence to elements I personally love in the song (such as Ian Curnow’s Roland Jupiter-8 “animal” sounds 🐘 and airy Oberheim OB-X synth lead, or Paul Webb’s driving bassline). 🎹
🎼 The above was all done in an effort to create the ultimate audio-visual “live” version of the song that also stands on its own as a single, and that I hope you enjoy as my small tribute. 🎈
🎛️ Thank you for stopping by, and for reading me ‘talk talk’ about a song I originally bought back in the day (the CD of which I still have here with me) that helped shape ‘(it's) my life’ and lead to decades of songwriting my own music (euromantix.com), at times creating remixes, and on this occasion, coming full circle. 💿
✨ I should finally note that my instinct is to not touch something that is already perfection, but at the same time I feel Talk Talk and Hollis are criminally underrated, and so by creating a fresh version of the track with more of what I love in it, in an industry that is used to remixes and remasters anyway, the hope is it may introduce Talk Talk to a new audience who can in turn experience the magic that lies inside its four beautiful minutes.” - Perifractic

CHANGES INCLUDE:
0:00 Duplicated the "elephant" sound that fascinated me as a teen to here & few other places
0:01 Increased bassline & flange
0:04 Increased "seagulls"
0:09 Increasaed Oberheim synth notes throughout
0:10 Added country acoustic guitar AI separated from their "Montreux" 1986 live show (and pitched up as the live show was performed 1 semitone lower)
0:17 Used my special technique for adding chorus to vocals without using any effects
0:22 Introduced live vocals mixed with studio vocals (Hollis was remarkably consistent live & it's hard to hear the difference)
0:50 Synth brass pads mostly replaced with the more ethereal ones from "The Saturday Show" live performance • Talk Talk - It's My Li... (pitched up as it was performed 2 semitones lower)
1:19 The tail-ends of "ends" are one of the rare places it's possible to hear how Hollis's incredible live vocals differed from the single
2:31 Increased the percussive "fiddlesticks"
2:56 Another place it's easier to make out Hollis's live vocals
3:35 Ending tails off as a live performance would do, with Lee Harris’s fading drums revealing the live, unprogrammed elements (intentionally left untidied by me) that lie beneath on the studio tracks
3:39 Hollis's live vocals finally take centre stage and end with his sign off of, "Goodnight". Goodnight Mark.

"It's my life" is 40 years old? Damn, guess I'm older than I think 🤔 not only do I LOVE new wave (real childhood nostalgia), but Talk Talk is one of my favorites since it came out, lol. Gen X forever! RIP Mark.
Thanks for doing this, I love Talk Talk and the sound of Mark Hollis’s voice. They really are the most underrated British band, their later albums are incredible but having said I can’t stop listening to ‘Tomorrows started’ at the moment. Wish someone would make a documentary about them.

I love this music. I am 44 this year... so just a bit too young to have appreciated them fully at the time (I'm either the youngest GenX or a geriatric millennial, I'm not quite sure!) but I remember my mum listening to them all the time and this brings back many warm memories. It's actually quite frustrating to have grown up surrounded by so much awesome music, but missing out on seeing it performed live. By the time I was old enough to go to festivals etc. the world had moved on and so had many of them... but hey, I didn't get to see Mozart either, it is what it is!

What a beautiful labour of love ❤️
I'm not sure I ever tire of listening to this song. I clearly remember their music being played in the clubs when it was new. Years later I still appreciate it. This video is unusual in that it shows more of Lee Harris. I always think he was (and could still be) camera shy. While Mark had the voice, Lee was the eye candy!
Fantastic song. The 80's the best decade of music. Released a year before I would have started high school.
His terrestrial life has been paused at the moment but the life he's living now, that's for sure, it will never ends! We miss you Mark, R.I.P. Thank you very much for this video, Christian!

Fantastic band. Memories growing up in the 80s listening to KROQ here in SoCal.

Well im 49. I remembered this song like it was yesterday. Brings back a few good memories .😊
Thanks for this. I still play the 12" at my Balearic sessions in Cape Town. 🌅🌞
I had completely forgotten about this song and when it played a gush of memories from the 80's came flooding back in the most haunting way. This is a very interesting AV remix, now with added elephant! 🙂Nice one, Perifractic.

Love how they mimic singing and in the end cut to their actual mics. I forgot I saw that a lot back in the day. :)
This song is soooo good. I first heard it on the radio at work in 1997. Not knowing who made it and the title i searched for the song a long time. For some reason i kept bumping into Simple minds - Dont you forget about me. It wasnt untill Gwenn Stefani released the remake that i finally found the original ❤
I've only heard the No Doubt version before. I was a toddler when Talk Talk released the original. I like both.
this is golden. class.
still can't believe he's gone. :( such a talent.
I was a huge Talk Talk fan back then, and still is. Thanks for putting this together! ❤

I wholeheartedly approve of this, amazing work!
I've been listening to this band since 1984 -- I was 14 -- this album was my first. There is no one like Talk Talk to me. They were one of the few bands that evolved their sound, each album better in some ways than the last. I was 16 when Colour of Spring came out -- well, the 12" for "Life's What You Make It" which included this incredible b-side called "It's Getting Late in the Evening" to me presaging Sprit of Eden's sounds a bit. I didn't like the "It's My Life" album when I first heard it -- but I had a friend that would play it around me constantly. I found myself singing a song in my head, loving it, then realizing that "it's Talk Talk!" I've gotta listen that album more. What an amazing album. The free-jazz trumpet solo from Henry Lowther on "Tomorrow Started" still blows my mind. Thanks for doing this, and it's nice to see you're a Talk Talk freak like me. :)

@@RetroRecipes Mark Hollis was a true one of a kind. Totally committed to his musical vision but uniquely talented enough to carry off his vision. He only compromised once as Talk Talk in the 80's when their label wanted them to be a generic 80's new romantic type band. They did it for a while for Mirror man & the self titled single but Hollis soon rebelled & that was it, the Talk Talk we all love & then his evolutionary solo work.

Wow, didn't even know Mark died.. 😢 dunno how I missed that one. They were really unique. People used to say to me that it sounded so depressing, but to me it was really uplifting, especially when I was very down, I would listen to them and feel a whole lot better, energized and back, hanging in there with the tools to take on the world. Somehow there's something very comforting in their music, giving you a sense that you're not alone in feeling this way.

I seem to recall his family never made a statement as to how, so he might have been just sick - it was 2016 if my memory is correct and he was just 63. A little older than I expected.

Thank you. It's not so much spending the money as losing it... A video like this is put out solely for love and all revenue goes to the songwriters/publishers (automatically by KZread), but technically it doesn't cost me anything other than time (and lost ad revenue compared to a normal video), but it's well worth it!
Music... from before the Dark Times. Always appreciated.
This never fails to make me stop, listen, and remember. Such a beautifully haunting and ageless song.
Love this song, awesome job on the upscale.
Loved that tune when it came out.. still do.. ahh how time flies by and is the master of us all.
Solid gold. Induced chills. Never knew much about the band despite it being my generation but this and probably 4 other songs play on 1st Wave (satellite radio in the states) and for sure, defined our generations best music of this genre. Would love to see a retrospective of how you did this, perhaps a making of the making of. And thank you for the link to the multi-track download. Amazing that such a thing exists. (I grabbed my copy and will be firing up Logic Pro this weekend; it's sat idle for far too long).
Love this song brilliant upscale 😊
Brilliant! Thanks for doing this :)
Excellent work doing a recreation of the performance that never was... AI is amazing. I do recall this song from the 80's... underrated yes! Bravo to everyone involved! I'm playing the linked video, and it's lower in pitch like you said... I think it's better higher... and that's the way I remember it too... I guess that makes me biased?
Wonderful. Thank you.

Mark Hollis really was a genius. And he had the artistic integrity to stop quite young when, I presume, he felt he had nothing left that he really wanted to say, which I really respect.

Good tune, reminds me more of vice city, rather then when I heard it on tv car commericials in the 80's.
That kind of looks like Chris on keys. From the sides.. and if you don't get a real good look at him. Also, my mind is telling me I fell in love with this song because it was on the new wave channel in GTA Vice City.
I have always been fond of the Hammersmith 1986 live version at 8 minutes with the extended percussion bit in the middle and the guitar sound. may 8th. 8 songs clocking in at 56 minutes from the concert was issued by their label on a hard to find CD, but there is a bootleg with 10 songs or so.
