I've had Remington 740s and 742s in various calibers. I've never had one jam but I've kept them clean and properly lubricated.

I've had one of these for years, I had it not go completely into battery all the way a couple of times the first time at the range when I shot about 20 rounds. I had not cleaned it before shooting it that first time. When I got it home I cleaned it thoroughly (filthy!) and lubed the bolt/raceway, was pretty dry/dirty since it's direct impingement like an AR15. After that (15 years ago) it's worked fine and haven't had it malfunction in any way since, apparently they like to be clean and lubed like an AR. I did have a gunsmith tell me that if you buy a new magazine for a 742 the feed lips need to be tweaked for the gun to feed properly, I had a third one fitted by him but the other two (came with the rifle) worked just fine as did the one he fitted.

It was cleaned and lubed properly. No amount of magazine tweaking helped neither did trying other types of ammo.

The plastic bolt cover is missing. It takes 10 minutes to replace it. Remove the trigger assembly and the bolt handle, and slide it in from the bottom. You're not supposed to run that gun without it.

I have two of these and they run flawlessly. I must say I hate the term "Jammed!" Thats a crappy generic term for it didn't go bang on the next shot. A better question to ask is what is it doing? Does fail to pick up a new cartridge from the magazine? Does it fail to go into battery? Does it fail to extract? Does the bolt lock back without an empty magazine? This information is critical to diagnose the problem, and each symptom has it's own likely cause. As an auto mechanic the most annoying complaint I hear from customers is "My car won't crank", yet they cant tell me if the starter is turning the engine over or not... Like a car these rifles require maintenance, the gas system and chamber must be kept clean, the receiver rails should be clean and lubed, and never store the magazines loaded as the spring will fatigue and cause poor feeding.

@@MovieMaker225 it’s really just poor designing trying to keep up with the market at the time. Shame because I really love Remington firearms specifically.

@@MovieMaker225I know AND because it readily takes detachable “higher” capacity magazines. I have the 30-06 with multiple extended mags it’s the stand in for a m1918 untill I finish my modifications to an actual hunting BAR. I’m dressing it up to look like an M1918 and modifying it to except m1918 magazines

Your problem is most likely the magazine feed lips on the rear right, looking at the mag from the back. That's what my problem was, and it seems you have the same problem I had.

I happened to watch a USOG video on this gun last night. He said the issue a lot of times is bad feed lips on the magazine, maybe file/sand em down a touch. I’ve also heard if you buy one of these used have the headspace checked and to run them heavy lubed. Good luck. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Its cleaned and lubed properly. Tried all kinds of adjusting the magazine and different brands of ammo with different bullet types and different bullet weights. These rifles are just a flawed design.

They jam a lot when they get dry. You need to strip it down and clean and lubricate it regularly. Light synthetic grease reduces failure rate dramatically. One other potential problem area is the chamber. If the rifle has slight rust or congealed old oil from sitting for years, the chamber can grip the shell and slow the bolt. I use a large brass brush with 0000 steel wool dipped in Hoppe's. Chuck it in a drill and go to town for 5 minutes until the chamber is polished. That will have your Woodmaster flinging shells in no time. I found a KZread video on the subject kzread.info/dash/bejne/hn2flcqkoaa3iso.html
