Remembering the "Unbroken" spirit of Louis Zamperini

The bestselling book "Unbroken" told the harrowing true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympian and war hero. Captured and tortured by the Japanese during WWII, he returned to Japan years later to tell his tormentors he forgave them. Chip Reid looks back at the remarkable life of Zamperini, who died this week at the age of 97.

He died 5 years ago today. I remember this story on Sunday Morning. I saw the film and read the book. This wonderful man was a true hero. Not because of what happen to him in the war, but how he lived his life after. He refused to be bitter and angry. He lived his life. God Bless Him! I hope that someday Unbroken is made again. It was good, but I thought it was lacking in telling his story. Thank you Louis for your service to your country! Thank you for being you!

..I'd say because in the end God changed his life for good. He started off life wild & unlovable yet determined thus his successes. Shaking hands with Hitler however was no great thing & yes he did do well in areas of his life but it doesn't mean he was a great person. His alcoholism almost lost him his wife & his life..but then God..Jesus Christ gave him a new heart! Perhaps Jesus is really the One you should talk to. Look at the miraculous things He did..the cruel things He endured & the death He died willingly for mankind. He alone, was no ordinary man!

Indeed, and I can see why they call the movie unbroken in the first place. Even in the darkest hours that louie had he never gwve up hope, and even when he was imprisoned in a japanese detention camp he took all of their torture and still kept persevering, and even after the war louie found and mustered the courage to forgive the japanese for what they had put him through. Truly he is one of gods greatest creations, and a very good inspiration to people around the world. May you rest in peace louie, you were a good man, no a awesome man.

as a japanese, luois's story makes me cry. You have to remember that normal Japanese people really admired him during the 1936 olympics, just like everyone admire Usain Bolt now. Watanabe was truly the epitome of evil and had small man syndrome as he wanted to be like his brother but never made it so he took his jealousy and rage out on everyone else. He was also probably bipolar, which made this the worst combination possible. RIP Lou, you are missed bro.

Louie Zamperini , returned to Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands from June 2001 to July 2001, I was on same island as overseas contractor with Raytheon when he was giving this one interview to Kevin Barnes, another contractor who also worked with Raython Technical Services, Louis Zamperini spent 58 yrs away from what was known as "Execution Island" in WW2 the Central Pacific Ocean, he gave a 1 hr 45 min interview exclusively with Kevin Barnes in the hot tropics , Louis never missed a beat, he narrated and told his story. The interviewer said he never got a questioned in until 10 minutes near end of interview. Lou recounted every faceted detail of his POW status while being held on Kwajalein for that time in May 1943 . Truly fascinating 👌

I don’t think anyone could really in their own strength. In a different interview I believe from CBN he said once he committed his life to Jesus he was able to find strength in God and forgive. As the Word says with God nothing is impossible. And as Loui said “hating someone is self destructive, it only hurts yourself.” Angelina also said she’s never known anyone with so much joy and love and he’s funny… this is how we are blessed when we choose to submit our lives into heavenly poppa God. He fills us with himself… love joy peace faith strength endurance etc

Just finished the book! Louis Zamperini was an adventurous rambunctious youth, an Olympian hero who competed with and against Jesse Owens, and then became a World War II soldier in the United States Air Force. He was a survivor of a plane crash and went adrift for 2,000 miles on the Pacific Ocean for 47 days with no water or food while he was surrounded by sharks and vultures. Zamperini was rescued by the Japanese and then routinely beaten as a POW and as an enemy combatant under the care of the most notorious psychopath in a secret prison camp. Subject to starvation, all kinds of emotional and psychological abuse, Zamperini was finally scheduled to be massacred with his friends and fellow captives when the A-bombs were dropped on Japan. Allied victory would eventually bring him home to Torrence, California - his home. Then the nightmares, the PTSD and a battle with addiction began. No one it seemed could help him - but him. Although Zamperini's powerful legs had once set world records at a young age; it turned out that his forgiveness was his most awesome strength. It was a kind of forgiveness that religion at it's best teaches. It took seven years for the author of "Unbroken" to write the story in the sunset of this remarkable man's life. Skip the movie and read the book. You will want to know every last detail. That's what a good book does.

Andre Y s there were two different planes. Zamperini had to switch planes to the Green Hornet because his previous plane almost downed in the sea before too. They did a bombing on a Japanese occupied island and they were shot and almost didn’t have enough fuel to get back home. So the green hornet wasn’t shot down, it was the first that was almost I believe.
