Remembering the Festival Of Steam
After our previous video exploring the Mallet Locomotive #227, in this video we remember the Festival Of Steam which took place in July of 2019 in Duluth, Minnesota.
With the help of some contributing videos and photos, used with permission, we look back at a huge event held at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum when the Union Pacific's Big Boy #4014 traveled from Cheyenne, Wyoming to the "end of the line" at the bumper at the Duluth Depot. Over 12,000 people came out to see the engine up close.
This is a video series from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum exploring all things trains while the museum is currently closed due to the pandemic. You can see all of the videos, mostly published during the shutdowns of 2020 at www.DuluthTrains.com/KZread

Special thanks to Fred Hoeser, Jeff Terry, Tim Schandel, Dave Schauer, and Josh Miller for contributing video and photos to make this video possible.

Jim wrinn. May he rest in peace
It was a terrific day!
This is the kind of thing that restores faith in humanity. Even though I wasn’t there it feels like I was sitting right in front of the big locomotive. Very special
When I saw the side-by-side steam loco shot, I thought, "Beauty and----the _beauty!"_ My true love is for the 19th Century locos, the Americans (AKA "Eight-wheelers"), Moguls, Consolidations (like the 332), and Ten-wheelers, followed by the later "Mikes," "Pacifics," "Mountains," "Northerns," "Hudsons," and "Berkshires," but there's an undeniable lengthy greyhound look to the Articulateds and "Malleys." Thank you. Great video! Stay safe, everyone.
8:56 theme : steampunk ken : visibly uncomfortable
Very nice memory!
Great! Simply just great! So many memories connected to the Depot and train travel. Keep it up...thanks to you and your staff for these wonderful journeys into our transportation history.
I believe we met two of Ed’s relatives at Strasburg one day. They seemed really nice
Love your videos . my family and I enjoy watching them. Can't wait to come back to the museum again.
You captured a wonderful memory. Thanks.
I’ve been waiting for this video! I love 4014 I saw it three times in 2019. The first time was in Northfield, MN. The second time was in South St. Paul, MN. And then finally when I was on a summer vacation in Colorado we drove to Cheyenne, WY to see it coming home after it’s tour of the Midwest. Wonderful memories from that year.
wish i could have been there that weekend. i did get to see the 4014 come through my town on the way to duluth. i love union pacific's steam program. it's to bad the 261 couldn't have made it to.

If you can make it to the St. Paul Union Depot in June during their Train Days event 261 is going to be there to celebrate it's 30th anniversary of being restored. Steam theme for that event going to be lots of fun I imagine. Big Boy won't be there but thought I'd mention it after seeing your comment.

Superb video. Great fun. I was not able to get to Duluth, but I saw the 4014 at the SPUD. I even had a nice conversation with you, Ken. Then I watched the 4014 pulling the grade out of St. Paul on its way to Duluth. 2019 was a good year for steam.
What a great video. Thank you Ken and LSRM.
Another great video. My kudos to all who made this video. Thank you very much. Be safe and healthy please.
Thinking about the BIG BOY, If the UP was going to run it from Washington to New York. I would make sure I camp out at my old favorite Hot Spot, Holmesbug Junction. Of course once it hit NJ NY tunnels, the engine need a Electric Locotive to escort it to Penn Station
Though I couldn’t make it to Duluth to see her, I had plenty of fun chasing the 4014 through Wisconsin on her way to Chicago. The event looked amazing though, here’s hoping we can see another similar event in the near future!
Wow! This is fantastic! Tank you for putting up the vid!
Thanks, very good brought memories back. Good work. wish that I would have been there.
At the SPUD the big boy was not able to go through the switches on the east end due to the many wheels on the tender
You should try to reach out to other steam museums for a collab, such as the Colorado railroad museum or the Cumbres Railroad
what about the many times the 261 visits Duluth
Need to fix the typo in the thumbnail. What's a "FLASHABCK"?
what chime does DM&IR 332 wears?
