My dad was a big Trekkie and I remember him bringing home the first issue of Starlog. After he read it he gave it to me and I fell in love with it. We would always bond over the articles, my dad kept his subscription till he passed away in 2005. Unfortunately I gave up my mandatory reading of starlog in 86. Thanks again for bringing back some wonderful memories Junkman. Keep up the great work

Starlog, Epic, Fangoria, Famous Hollywood Monsters and if you were sneaky Heavy Metal were the magazines you used to kill time when you were in a grocery store and your mom or grandma runs into someone they know and decides to talk in the store for 40 minutes. Before KZread there was Nintendo Power, Wizard, Star Wars Galaxy. What would make kids heads explode now is the fact that many of these magazines were printed in cheap black and white newsprint. No color and the tiniest of thumbnail images.

Starlog was, along with the UK magazine, Starburst, my go to source for movie info in the late 1970's, and early 1980's. I still have quite a few of them, but I do regret getting shot of the special editions of Starlog - Heroes, Villains, Spaceships, Aliens, Planets, Weapons, Toys, Special Effects, etc. They were awesome. Thank you, Junkman, for making this video. It made me very happy. Nice mention of 'Blake's Seven', too. You're perfectly right. It was never about shonky effects - the ongoing story was everything. And it is definitely worth binge watching, if you can. Still hate that last episode, though - it still hurts bad.

Like a couple of people pointed out. Magazines like Starlog was our internet. Being in a “fandom” during that time was literally like having a second job. Like JM said; the ads and the “personals” section was where you’d sometimes find the real gems. Maybe it was a piece of merch that you had to go to the drugstore to get a money order to send in, or if it was a “smaller operation” it was ok to send carefully concealed (they used to stress that to kids all the time) cash via snail-mail and the wait would begin... Or you might find VHS trading clubs (again, mostly through mail) to get things that just didn’t exist here, like video rips of anime laserdiscs, uncommon or even common movies at a time when it wasn’t unusual for the MSRP of a VHS or Betamax to be from $40-80 each. This was also the time when Dungeons and Dragons was first showing up, so there were lots of RPG or tabletop games that you’d otherwise never knew existed. I ran a C=128 BBS at one point back then (2400 baud dial-up modem using a dedicated 128 message board/ up/downloads piece of software called “Dragonfire!” and for a very tiny period something like that stood out from the other 8 Bit BBS’ that were out at the time. And yes, there were months where I’d pay to have my BBS number in the “classifieds”. I think it cost maybe $5? And yes, I remember Starlog always including an article about video games of some type almost every issue. Lol, fans could take it a step further if you happened to somehow newtwork through phone calls, snail-mail and then BBS’ that would have relevant message boards. All text though. This was way before you could post pics or anything like that. Anyway, lots of fan groups would “irregularly publish” fan magazines “fanzines” with all the articles, stories, photos, etc finally being cut and glue-stuck onto pages, photocopied, assembled and finally mailed out. I was in a few of these communities during the print media era, and as I’m sure you can imagine, it was a labor of love. It was kind of like something that a community like this would come together and do in their spare time... Great vid JM

I enjoyed Starlog magazine since I was a kid. I would get it at 7-11 stores along with Cracked magazine. I once put an ad in Starlog in 1991 (as you found out), and had an epic response. These were the days before the internet when now we can get all sci-fi information for free.

Back in high school, after class I go 2 different school supply stores, one called MACES and the other called BOOK SHELVES. They both had used magazine section. Every time I visit I look for STARLOG magazines. Most of the time I can't afford them, so just read them there. I usually hide the STARLOG magazines behind the crochet magazines or the food magazines, so that I can still read them the next days to come. Or I hide them until I have money to buy them.

People waiting in line for months, every fast food, movies like Fanboys came out that was based on it. People saying current SW can compare to even Episode I in terms of popularity, fan engagement, basic relevance , are kidding themself. I’ve watched two out of the four new ones only a single time.

I used to love Starlog Magazine. Especially the editions dedicated to Star Wars. I was lucky enough to even get a Starlog Store at our local mall in the early 90’s. Dave Prowse did a opening weekend appearance there and signed autographs for $5 each. I kept going back to get more and more autographs. At least $100 bucks worth. At one point my family and I were the only people there for maybe an hour. He was very gracious and we were able to talk to him for quite a while. We even took a number of photos with him. My daughter (now 30 years old) made the mistake of making fun of my Star Wars collecting hobby so I posted a picture of her with her mom, dad and Dave Prowse on Facebook. Her “Cool” friends loved it. It even outed one of her best friends as a rabid SW fan and cosplayer!!! My daughter had no idea. Now they want to see my collection. I guess that backfired on my daughter. The store had many more autograph appearances by other Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Batman, etc...actors and comic illustrators over the years. I compiled quite a nice autograph collection over the few years they were open. All in person and all very cheaply. I had all sorts of things signed. Not just photos. Don Post helmets, toys, posters, replica lightsabers, film cells and sculpted mugs among other things. I also did a lot of Star Wars toys trades and purchases over the couple of years it was open. I went there nearly every weekend and loved it. I was upset when I found out they were closing but I really cleaned up when they had their going out of business sale. Tons of toys and autographs. Another thing that I loved there was that they also sold back issues of the magazines. I think I purchased most all of them back to the very early issues. It was a fantastic magazine and really cool store. I hated to see them go. Thanks for sharing and bringing up some fond memories for me.

Thanks for the retrospective. I loved to read Starlog magazine as a kid, I’d always look at it while I was at the grocery store with my Mom. I’d also looked at Fangoria, Famous Monsters Of Hollywood and Heavy Metal. But Starlog was the only one my Mom would buy me because it didn’t look too violent. That’s was our internet if you wanted to know when movies were being released, it had interviews with the special effect and makeup people, supporting actors along with the behind -the-scenes look at movies they were being made or past movies like Star Wars or Alien. I remember the issue they had on Aliens and it really cool. I still look at Fangoria, Famous Monsters and Heavy Metal at B&N but I sure do miss Starlog. Once again thanks for the review and the link to the website so I can look at the back issues.

I recently rewatched all of Blake's 7 (because of you mentioning it a while back.) so I decided to run through it again. It's character/plot driven. The effects were very 1960s-1970s Dr Who style effects because they were done all on video tape not on film, and they were limited to what they could do because of it. Starlog was pretty cool. My brother started reading it in the 1970s, and I still have some (mostly Star Wars related.)

STARLOG MAGAZINE started because of the Star Trek convention craze . It was meant strictly for the Star Trek TV show . There was rumors of a return to the Star Trek universe . There was even an article on the new show being planned . The new show was to be more about The Federation , not just from the viewpoint of the USS Enterprise . When STAR WARS exploded in the movie theaters , the editor decided to make the magazine be more about science fiction in general . It's because of the magazine , I learned more about STAR WARS than any other publication . The same for the movie ALIEN . Even though they never showed the alien in the magazine prior to the movie's release , I saw pictures of the spaceships and the costumes . I also read and saw some pictures of Bladerunner prior to it's release . They kept printing great information on the upcoming sci-fi movies . I wish it kept publishing , because their magazine was ALWAYS a great read .

Hats off dude for doing a Starlog magazine video! I remember getting home from 6th grade in the late 70s watching WTBS "The Superstation", and tuning in to my favorite show at the time, "The Space Giants"! You remember that one, right Junkman?...the Japanese show with Goldar, Silvar and a bunch of other creepy looking characters! Anyhow, they had a commercial for a one-year subscription to Starlog. Oh man, with no internet and not much beyond Siskel & Ebert, Starlog highlighted coming movies that I was excited about seeing! Starlog was one of the few mags that catered to sci-fi and horror buffs. I stuffed an envelope with one-years subscription cost (I don't necessarily remember what the cost was), and begged my mom to mail it for me (or I asked her to take the wrinkled bills and spare change, and write a check out to "Starlog Magazine" because they didn't accept cash lol. Well, weeks and months later I never EVER got the subscription of Starlog!!!! Man was I pissed!@ IDK if my mom fucked me over or what, but I never received it. I think she just kept my money and blew off my request to write a check, That's my Starlog Magazine memories. Thanks for the video!!!

a good topic might be 'captain company''...they were a mail order company from the early 60's to present...selling assorted geekery in the back of magazines like famous monsters of filmland/creepy/errie/vampirella ect....including sexy posters of a 14 year old girl dresses as a vampire...cool when i was 12...weird now that i'm 53

I bout Starlog mag as a kid in the 70's and 80's. I don't have them anymore sadly. But I did read in one of the ones from the 70's that. The people who made Star Blazers( or Space Battleship Yamato) tried to sue Lucas for stealing their idea. To make Star Wars) They Lost. The first Starlog I had was 7. I know the article was not very long and in the front part of the mag. I say Mag because I'm A HepCat from the 70's. I'm Like gone Daddy real Gone. Oh people didn't say that in the 70's that was the 40's.Screw That I'm Still a HEPCAT . HA!! HA!! And Still no Mandalorian esp 3 review ??? Here is a point. Is the FTC going to start Fining all the "24th" letter rated web sites????

@@aaronstepien2363 would you happen to have issue 86? I'm just wanting a good picture of the artwork in the back. I did some art and it was printed but I gave the issue to my art teacher. I'd love to get a picture of the art I did
