I've grown to respect Tom Cruise a lot more after seeing movies like Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Minority Report, and Vanilla Sky. He may get a lot of hate for his scientology beliefs and being a type-casted actor but you cant deny that he has some really good performances under his belt.

Genuine emotion by Cruise and despite his detractors he really shared a bond with arguably one of the last great filmmakers , very moving.

It was worth every minute of the three years Tom. A very, very important and great movie. Exceptionally relevant today.

Not only was ews cruises best performance, by extension, this was his best interview. No pomp and circumstance, just sincerity and respect.

Some actors are worn down by their celebrity status and the focus that's always on them. Tom Cruise seems to radiate it back and it makes him brighter. He is unusual in that respect.

I laugh at all the criticism. The guy can't win. Whatever he says people are gonna find a reason to hate. Sure, he hasn't exactly helped his cause with his antics in recent years (years after this interview was filmed). But the fact is, you don't know him. I don't him. No one knows him except his friends, family, colleagues, etc. So we don't have right to pass judgment, especially on a subject as sensitive as the passing of a close friend. My personal opinion is that, in this interview at least, he means everything he says. If it appears like he's "acting," it's probably because he is a PROFESSIONAL ACTOR. The man makes his living expressing his inner feelings on camera. Generally, people in that line of work are sensitive and emotionally expressive by nature. So naturally, we are always going to compare and try to contrast their genuine emotional reactions to those they put forward while in performance.

EWS is as underrated now as it was hyped when it came out. It is a masterpiece of cinematic art. The set design, the cinematography, the use of music, the actors' performances are as good as they get. EWS is awe-inspiring and enigmatic as the 2001 monolith and as chillingly beautiful to watch as Barry Lyndon. And it is really a dreamlike experience that stays with the viewer 'forever and ever' to aptly quote from another SK masterwork.

Totally agree, and I didn't like it the first time I saw it in the cinema. Then a friend of mine had it on a couple of years later and I found myself really getting into it. Since then I've seen it probably six times and it gets better with each viewing. Truly a haunting film.

I may not subscribe to Tom Cruise beliefs, or even agree with many of them. And yeah, from outside looking in (especially after watching Going Clear, though it's always been very apparent) he does seem what some would call 'nuts'. But there is just SOMETHING about him that I am fascinated by. He's acted in four of my very favorite films (Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, and even Interview With The Vampire) and he gave great performances in all four. I just love him as an actor, and outside of his talent, there's another aspect about him that I can't get enough of, but I couldn't tell you what it is. I don't even know myself.

Kubrick was a twisted kind of genius. He would cast people using their problems and most hidden fears and feelings to express their best performances ever. He would study their personality before casting them. He would do anything it takes to express his art. This movie was probably Kubrick at his deepest. However you have to watch it several times to try to get his message, whatever we may think he was trying to say.

I love Cruise, but no. I couldn't disagree more. He's barely one of the 5 best actors named Tom alone. The 5 best actors to me are Mifune, Bogart, Brando, De Niro, and Pacino. I also have Nicholson, James Stewart, Chaplin near the top 5.

Eyes Wide Shut is a fav film of mine because I'm still constantly searching for the meaning behind this genius film. Tom was phenomenal in this movie.

This is why I like Tom Cruise. His whole life (whether he's playing a roll or not) is always analyzing what a normal human being would do in these situations. Wow, this is the first time Inheard Tom Cruise swear, not as an actor, but as himself. I think Kubrick unlocked something in Cruise when he worked with him. Cruise seemed more authentic and embodied in his roles from that film onwards.

I don't think we will ever see a Performance of Tom Cruise ever again like the way he did in "Eyes Wide Shut" or "Magnolia". And i find it really really sad because i would love to see him playing a role again with such dedication and commitment and stepping out of his comfort zone that seem to be Action Blockbusters. Cruise took us on a very intimate journey as Bill in "Eyes Wide Shut" and it felt like dreaming a dream of someone else but seeing it as clear as the one who dreams it.

They wanted to get their money back and appease all the actors, agents, marketers, and crews who took part in it. You have to understand that the majority of Hollywood doesn't know this shit goes on. Btw, still up here in 🇨🇦, it's snowing, go figure. Literally lived two blocks from flag, when I lived in Clearwater. Stanley Clarke, and others and your humble narrator did a gig at the fort Harrison for a graduation . Fond memories.

I believe that although Eyes Wide Shut was a complete masterpiece, it destroyed Tom and Nicole's marriage. Every Kubrick movie is a complete mindfuck and I can't imagine what it does to an actor's brain. I'm not saying it isn't worth it for the sake of the art, but playing the part of crazy, can make you crazy.

The same difficulty he shows in reaching for the "right" words telegraphs the inner difficulty he finds in reaching the "real" world. He is terrified of returning to the flawed nature of the man he was before superstardom. His words , his body , his actions are painfully inadequate no matter how much time he spends crafting their exactness. They can never rescue him from the fear that his own humanity will betray him in the end

Mr. Cruise's religious beliefs are HIS business. But the man he projects, the films he's made, the way he treats his fans? He stands alone. The last movie star.

I find it ironic he did eyes wide shut and then joined the church of scientology.. yet still I have to say he's a great actor regardless of his beliefs.

High On Raw He was already in the Church of Scientology for quite awhile before he filmed Eyes

I thought Tom Cruise was a terrible actor before Eyes Wide Shut. I left with a completely different opinion of him. Kubrick was truly a genius in how he got out such career defining performances out of his actors.

It was absurd because if you watch the movie you realize that it was no coincidence that Kubrick died shortly after it's release. The same way the model died shortly after the Mansion party.

he's acting here, but I do believe that Tom does have these feelings deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep inside.

Didn't Kubrick die right when Cruise was shooting the deathbed scene in Magnolia? You can't help but think he was channeling his feelings for Stanley.
