Remember When: Dock Ellis Threw a No-Hitter on LSD | NowThis
Throwing a no-hitter in baseball is one of the toughest feats in sports - now imagine someone doing that on acid. This is what happened to the Pirates’ pitcher Dock Ellis.

On Friday, June 12, 1970, the 25-year-old Ellis took to the mound against the San Diego Padres. Ellis had reportedly visited a friend in Los Angeles the day before, and used LSD multiple times. Thinking it was Thursday, he took another hit of LSD hours before he was supposed to pitch. Upon being reminded where he was supposed to be, Ellis flew from LA to San Diego, and arrived 9 minutes before he was supposed to pitch.
And, even though he reportedly couldn’t even feel the ball, he went on to throw a no-hitter. Catcher Jerry May even worn reflective tape around his fingers, so Ellis could see the signals he was throwing.
Ellis later recalled, “I could only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched - I had a feeling of euphoria. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes. Sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned into powder. I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and I once thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimmy Hendricks. Who, to me, was holding a guitar and swinging at the plate.”

"He later admitted to regretting that day because it robbed him of his greatest professional memory" But would he even have that great memory if it weren't for LSD?

Its a great statement for anyone battling addiction. The drugs will rob you off the memory eventually. You'll just remember taking the drugs. Any highlights or downfalls will be attributed to the drugs and not you. I'm my language the word addicted translates to verslaafd, which in the literal sense means "to be enslaved". Got curious. Started digging a bit. Thought I'd share. A single word for being captured and forced to work for nothing does not exist in the modern dutch language. Only in a sentence like "to be made into a slave. forced into slave labor." Enslaved in dutch probably goes back to the root of enthralment. The dutch word for this also does not exist anymore. It now means "betovering" or enchantment. Was the slave class of old being held docile with a healthy dose of drugs and alcohol, and trippy religious rituals to keep them subservient to the upper class who provided it?

LSD isn’t usually associated with memory loss so there must be more to the story.

In an interview, he said the reason he pitches high is because it takes away the fear and pressure of winning or loosing. The older I get, the more sense that makes to me.

That's freaking awesome! Ellis D took LSD!
Makes total sense to me. I played some catch with my buddy on a single dose. And I was locked in, the ball went right where I wanted it to and the tracers seemed to help.
Is it somehow cheaper to make a video 1:1 or is the standard landscape too mainstream?

The music chosen for this video makes it hard to listen to the story being told.
I did something like this at a casino about 18 years ago . Playing roulette on acid I was betting on the numbers and hitting every time . I remember the friend i was with saying like wow how do you keep doing that ? I told her i can see the numbers. I wasn't betting big , i was only betting the min bet but i had hit every time for about 20 times straight . Someone from the casino came and talk to me and basically was trying to get me off of the table. Very strange experience. Flash forward to last year. And i took some acid at the same casino and tried again. This time i bet big 100 dollars on one play . And guess what , I lost 😂😂
I would have liked to have met this man.
I was surprised to learn a few years ago that this actually happened. I always thought it was a joke based on him being listed in the newspaper box scores as "Ellis, D."
Man, that music though...
What a legend.

Dude how is this not a movie lol 😂

Guy that made this vid has clearly never had acid 🤓
there you have it
Yes, I remember that. It didn't seem that remarkable to me, given the number of times I attended games after dropping acid. His real memorable game, to any Reds fan of the day, was when he gave an interview talking about how he was going to dominate and destroy the Big Red Machine in his next outing. The game was played in Cincinnati. I never heard such boos from the Reds fan, as the boos they/we rained down on him. As it turned out, the Reds absolutely destroyed him. He was finally pulled from the game in the first inning without getting a single out.
Aw man its like my German friend says. "Some people need to be on drugs to be there best selves"
It didn't work for me. I kept hitting batters.
Whole league was on lsd back then
He was using drugs to combat the overwhelming self centered fear of failure. His words not mine
The real life "Hoops Mccann"
not only a no hitter, but pitching to jimmy hendrix
He did acid back to back the second time that effect is not as strong I know from experience
I never thought lsd had gone to the big leagues
Great moments in psychedelic history. In the summer of 1971, the Ohio State Patrol started an innovative program to demonstrate the evils and harmful effects of marijuana. They scheduled a series of events around the state, where volunteer subjects/participants would drive go-karts around a highly modified course with safety barriers and protective measures all around the course. There would be 3 groups. (1) People driving unimpaired. (2) People who did not smoke marijuana, but who would for the test. (3) People who regularly used marijuana, and who smoked for the test. This required a waiver from the state government, of course. I don't know how they dealt with the feds. The first event was held in Cincinnati, with reporters from the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post present. Group 2, the people who didn't use marijuana, but did for the event, did horribly. Group 1, the unimpaired drivers, did admirably. But Group 3, the regular users, smoked them (no pun intended), with by far the best lap times, and no accidents. The rest of the tour was canceled.
