What i adore about this scene in the game is that Raru had never met link and only heard of his heroism through Zelda. The fact he trusted Zelda so much and Link to say what he did to Ganondorf and sacrifice his life too was just beautifully done

He trusted Zelda, as she was proof the kingdom he'd founded with Sonia would survive. When Ganondorf killed Sonia and raised his army to try and take over, Rauru KNEW Hyrule and the Royal line would survive it, because Zelda from the far-future fell into his time, holding one of his secret stones, with Sonia's mark on it. Regardless of what happened in the here-and-now, he could set the board to give Link and the people of his kingdom in the future the opportunity to finish the Demon king off.

that gets me thinking, since we dont yet have a difinitive placement for the botw/totk continuity and that era of the world. does the curse of demise and therefore the legend exist? does rauru put his trust in something he knows well or the hope of a young girl and her stories? did he think "that must be the hero of legend!" or did he simply only see hope in link? also if the legend/rules of the world do exist then, does rauru just instinctively sense that link is the right one to trust? like some aslan "they just knew" thing? much to ponder much to ponder

0:33 Even after 30+ years I still get goosebumps every time I hear that theme. I hate to sound like the dork I really am but that song perfectly encapsulates not only what the Legend of Zelda games have been for me but also video games in general. Exploring their worlds filled with magic and wonder has kept me sane.

I've known of this franchise for a good bit of my life (my "first" was twilight princess) and I only started getting into it thanks to my older brother (I'd watch him play the games whenever we hung out) and my first mainline game was botw, but first fully played totk, I'm already close to the end, and that cutscene still is fresh in my mind thanks to tha score and the voices (Matt mercer as the demon king was a perfect choice)

This entire track is fucking _fantastic._ The sadness of Rauru's sacrifice and death, the epic and familiar melody that plays when Link is mentioned, all wrapped up the ominous Zonai chants at the end. I get goosebumps listening every time.

The absence of it throughout the game is one of the reasons it hits much harder in that one crucial moment of the story. Proves that this was a right decision taken from Nintendo.

Rauru may have been a King. But he is definitely the bearer of the heros spirit in his time. Such a badass king.

Probably my favorite cutscene music in the whole game. That transition from the Zelda main theme, to what I assume is Rauru's theme (the sad piano motif, IV - iii - ii - vi) is beautiful and I immediately recognized the callback from Rauru's farewell at the end of the tutorial. Really cool.

It's crazy how Rauru's theme plays with the first three notes of the classic main theme because he's the first king of hyrule, and then you get a one second sound bite of Zelda's theme like how Rauru had only met Zelda for a short time -- just enough to recognize her for what she is. Then and only then do you get the epic version of the LoZ main theme playing for the first time the whole game, and ending the score was another sound bite of a similar sound cue to what you'd hear once you've correctly solved a puzzle.

Its almost as if his theme was composed for this very moment in the game, to transition into the main zelda theme. Like as if signifying how rauru is paving the way for Link. Very good thematic use of music as always from Nintendo

Forget that, why didn't they just take Gannondorf's secret stone and then kill him? I would understand if there was a barrier keeping him in place or something but he was completely exposed! These guys are idiots!

This music makes this such a heartbreaking moment. After losing Sonia, he's completely willing to die for his kingdom. His and Zeldas sacrifices take so much, and the music that goes along with them just stabs you right in the feels

Rauru's theme followed by Link' theme hurt me so hard

god this game is so fucking good 😭😭 i wanna go back to when it first came out, like it was genuinely just so fun. they improved on botw’s world so much and the ending was amazing. the final fight, finding out ganon can dodge your attacks, finding out zelda was the light dragon, rauru warning ganon of link, GANON BECOMING A DRAGON?! and then having to fight him with the help of dragon zelda? like these were all just so memorable for me. i liked botw but i really connected more with totk.

Raru had to sacrifice everything for a hero he didn't even know during that time...

Rauru giving his life and placing all hope on a knight he's never met shows that he trusts Zelda's word that Link is the last line of defense and will avenge them.

This song will go down in gaming history as one of the greatest pieces of music

It is always satisfying to listen to the main theme of the saga, even if it is only in a few seconds of the best cinematic of the entire game.

This scene literally had me crying the first time. The transfer into the main theme as Rauru says the name is so emotionally raw to me. Shit had me in tears and still gets me now

Rauru's theme is an incomplete version of the hero's song (TloZ Main theme) and only in this part of the game, when he sacrifices himself to save Hyrule, the song sounds complete

This is one of the best scenes of the entire game. The buildup to it was amazing, then when the music swells into the LoZ theme (link’s theme) when Rauru is talking about link smacked me in the chest. I was speechless. 10/10 scene.

In my opinion this is the best cutscene in the game. When Raru said "remember this name" it sent chills down my spine.

0:48 and everything after gives me chills, I know that the main theme being there is cool like it's triumphant and stuff but... there's this feeling of antiquity and legend for that part, and how everything leads to the present day. An era so old it's now legend. And after seeing that memory, it all clicks. It ended the same way the game began, especially with Ganon's power stopping in time and the light in Rauru's eyes fading in that moment. It seems like the Hyrule we were in always had Zelda in the past and all this was supposed to happen, now our story is written in history. It also feels like symbolism of Demise's curse, and how our fate is intertwined in an everlasting battle. Forever, for Eternity. Edit: After some thought I've decided that English needs to invent a word for this feeling, what I feel isn't exactly like anemoia but its similar too. I dunno, its like a historic feeling (?) idk how to describe it. Imagine you're reading a history book about a major event in the distant past and you finish it, then you're like "Aha so that's how it was." and get this strange ironic feeling of how one event leads to another towards the present day. Its a feeling I get a lot playing Zelda games, especially this one cuz of how far back Rauru's time was. SRY FOR THE RANT LOL

How many times am I gonna hear this theme? Yes!

Its cool that the last thing ganondorf hears before being sealed away is "link" and the last thing he says before getting nuked is "liiiiink".

This and the zelda lullaby on the final geoglyph memory...they really made me put the tears on "Tears of the Kingdom"

the reason I like Rauru's... it's because how brave he is for risking his own power and life to prevent Ganondorf's Dangerous Power to rule the whole Hyrule into the darkness...

We didn't just have dozens of hours of gameplay building up to this scene. We had nearly 4 years since the first BotW Sequel trailer bracing us for this scene. The final shot of the memory took me all the way back to 2019.

The music at 0:49 is so beautiful

Ganondorf has no idea what he's in for. He hasn't seen the Golden Lynel clips. He hasn't even seen the King Gleeok clips.

What I love the most about not just this music, but the scene with it is amazing. Rauru didn’t sacrifice himself not just to save his people, it was also for some hero he didn’t even know about. Literally Zelda told Rauru about Link and that’s it. He literally sacrificed his life for his people and Link based on shear faith for Link and I absolutely love that.

That pride will be your downfall GANONDORF.

This song…it just gives me chills everytime I hear it, and it makes me want to go play it again. I didn’t think BOTW could be beat, but dang…this TOTK game is just so amazing. Amazing job Nintendo, absolutely amazing.

1:04 I miss this creepy and eerie music.

My fav part for some reason is the instrument playing in the background at 0:57 I would listen to a whole song with this.

fun fact about the motif used at the end of the track! It's both used in relation to the Zonai people, as well as Ganondorf, leading me to assume it's a theme motif representing the ancient past/founding era! It's also sprinkled throughout the entire game, like in the surface and sky battle themes, as well as the shrines of light

The music here had so much emotion.

Maybe one of the most memorable moments in videogame history. I didn't expect this game to has one of a kind story like that... man what a game ❤

It really doesn’t, imo the story was so lame. I felt nothing while watching this cutscene nor any of the other cutscenes.

I really love the little zonai echoes at the end

I may not be a music major, but just from the music you can hear what is unfolding. The first part has some distorted music, it transitions to Raurus theme, slowly building up to the main zelda theme finally regressing to Raurus farewell theme ending in the zonai chant.

This is the only scene in anything that ALWAYS gives me chills

I love how it's not even a brief motif. Nope, you get the FULL Legend of Zelda fanfare.

God that build up to the original theme is so freaking EPIC!!!!!!!!!

One of the first scenes we saw glimpse of back in the 2019 trailer... it felt almost legendary when we finally saw it fully!

I get goosebumps to this every time!! The freaking main theme playing in the background when Rauru said “Remember this name” IS SO GOOD HDJSHHSDWUH Chills 😭

This scene gave me serious chills. Perhaps one of the greatest Zelda moments yet.

0:35 very few songs so perfectly capture what it means to be a hero

PEAK FICTION.

Rauru is easily my favorite character. In many ways, he was the true hero of the story!

Chris Hackney is such a great voice actor, I love how his Rauru voice is so close to his Dimitri, that when he gets angry it slips into the Feral Dimitri its wonderful

I fucking swear that rauru is more then a zonai and possible a reincarnation of link just as Sonia is of hylian. Because if he is able to do that for 50 thousand years he sure has a lot of courage to sacrifice himself like that

Hes definitly a incarnation of Link. If theres a Zelda (Sonai) and Ganondorf there must be a Link
