yeah by 1971 which is the year this movie takes place, black people were way more accepted in California than in Virginia and all those states. That’s why Sunshine was surprised when they refused service to them when they went out in the town celebrating after one of their wins. He genuinely didn’t know. Sunshine is a good dude 👍

Sunshine took what was initially teasing and/or disrespect and took control of the situation twice in 1 scene. First he gets called a fruitcake so he nails bertier with the football showing an impressive feat in front of the coaches securing his spot on the team. Then he gets called sunshine, which was a tease at first. Then he walks right up and demands that he shakes his hand elevating himself to a strong position that he dictates the respect he receives. In the next scene part, he gets into Bertiers head and gets Bertiers to pick a fight with him just for the fruitcake comment. Bertiers like "he kissed me" Julius can't help but laugh because of how silly it is. Then Sunshine just walks off smiling. He commands respect. Absolutely brilliant writing and cinematography.

Love this movie. It really reminds me of how things were in the early 70's. At my high school, there was a ton of racial tension including riots. I played on the football team which was about 50/50 black/white. We were a very tight knit team, it was the brotherhood of football and going into battle together each week above all else. I still remember when myself and another white player were walking down a hall during a pretty nasty riot and a couple of black guys were watching us walk by like they were thinking about jumping us. They didn't because I overhead one of them saying that we were on the football team and they didn't want to mess with the team. It's where I really learned a lesson to be color blind, we never thought of ourselves as black and white, just teammates who always had each others backs both on and off the field. Just like in the movie, winning didn't hurt - we were a really good football team which earned a lot of respect/admiration from the student body.

The key to this scene was when Colonel Bass said his son is a Quarterback and Coach Boone responded with "We are already set at quarterback" and then named two other schools that need one. It showed that Coach Boone was not a selfish coach and genuinely cared for the players. In the coaching world 90% of coaches would be selfish and would gladly horde all of the good players, even if it meant having 2 starting caliber quarterbacks on the team. Because, it is better to have the second one on your bench then to have him starting and excelling at another local school. But Coach Boone was honest with the Colonel and basically told him "I don't want to waste your son's talent if he could go somewhere else that needs him"

The Colonel and Sunshine's responses, too. The Colonel's refusal to go to another school, and even offering for his son to play another position, in addition to the vocal comments of a commitment to ending racism, says: - We are not attached to status (of being the starting quarterback) - We are choosing to be here. - We want to help however we can. - We value humility. Sunshine's letting his dad do the talking while he makes that throw says: - I respect my father. - We share the same values. - I know I am a victim of prejudices, as well. - I can endure without hatred. - My identity does not mean that I am weak. - I can earn respect without causing issues. - No one will doubt my ability. All of these are values you want in a teammate, an ally, a friend, and a man. Black or white, straight or gay.

It was hysterical when after Gerry called Ronnie "Sunshine" fruitcake, than Sunshine picked up a football and threw it far and hard right into Gerry and the others laugh at it, and Julius laughs hard because at the moment, it was the funniest thing in the world.
