Do you remember the crash landing of BA flight 38 at Heathrow airport?
The British Airways 777 was a scheduled flight from Beijing to London. In January 2008, the flight crashed just short of the runway while landing at Heathrow after both engines lacked in power two miles before touchdown. Fortunately, everyone made it out safely.
Ice crystals in the jet fuel clogged the fuel-oil heat exchanger, which sits prior to each engine. The restricted fuel flow led to a reduced power output, resulting in a loss of speed and altitude. The pilots reacted perfectly and retracted flaps by one step to reduce the drag and increase the speed again. Still, the plane landed 890 feet short of the runway.
This accident led to all 777 fitted with Rolls Royce engines having to modify their Fuel-oil heat exchangers.
Now you know! Like and follow for more aviation facts every day.
Joe

The Captain took the flack, whilst Rolls-Royce were the #1 root cause, but nobody mentions that. Can anyone name someone at RR who owned responsibility? Shame on BA how they treated him. His book gives me chills what he went through, poor bloke.

@@LAGoodz This is what society does, they just blame the pilots because it’s easier than blaming the corporations and having to actually spend millions of dollars to fix something. The majority of aircraft accidents are cited as “pilot error” yet, no one seems to talk about the fact that the pilot error wouldn’t have happened if the plane itself didn’t break in the first place. That’s why so many accidents happen, they’re too busy blaming the pilots because it’s easier than fixing the airplane itself. NTSB is a joke.

That's fascinating! Why was retracting the flaps just one step the right thing to do, instead of retracting the flaps completely? Is it because of the link between having enough wing surface for keeping enough lift and reducing it just enough to increase the speed? A perfect balance between both parameters so to speak? Genuinely intrigued by it 🤔

  • @ajidamarjati

Well, if you retract the flaps all the way up at such a low air speed, the aircraft would experience aerodynamic stall. Remember this happen during final approach - landing stage. I believe the airspeed is only about 145-150 kt.

@@peteconrad2077 - 777 FCTM states: “…calls for a flaps 20 approach and landing rather than a normal landing configuration as in other models. Testing and analysis shows that elevator authority at flap 30 approach speeds is not adequate to enable crew to successfully flare the airplane for landing in the unlikely event both engines failed in the landing configuration.”

@@EdOeuna but that’s utterly irrelevant to this case. There was precisely zero benefit from improved control. There was a lot of benefit from improved lift/drag ratio. You’re clearly not a pilot having to be told basics like this.

No Way! Nothing to do with engines but a 4km tarmac could have helped!

No it wouldn’t. If they’d had 8 engines they’d have still lost them all.
