Remaking Rare ltd.'s lost DREAM 64

Ойындар

Polysoft aims to re-create Rare LTD's Project Dream - a fantasy RPG that originated on the Super Nintendo before transitioning to the N64. Dream never saw the light of day, as it slowly evolved into Banjo Kazooie.

The footage they showed in Rare Replay was super dated compared to what they’d actually accomplished at the time, to my understanding. There’s the singular screenshot of Edison that been available for as long as I can remember, and it looks significantly better than what they showed in 2015. They did the same thing with Twelve Tales. This is cool but I’d be interested in a more imaginative recreation, if that makes sense. Not to bash on this of course

It's hilarious that they replicated the glitched shadow so accurately! It looks like Dream 64 renders the character's outline and makes a texture from it just once, but somehow fails to generate or copy any more frames after that.

I'm curious to see how development for this goes. Given there's so little to go off of for the 64 version, I suppose they could pull some stuff from footage of the SNES version. But otherwise, unless Tim releases more info on the dev cart he has (which I'm doubting at this point) or a leaked build winds up on the internet somehow, I feel like this would either end with recreating what we have for Dream as accurately and polished as they can or diving into speculative territory.

I don’t understand why Tim won’t dump twelve tales. I get Mario and Zelda cause he doesn’t own those and I get Dream because it’s so early in development but he really needs to leak twelve tales after what the fans did to dinosaur planet. You would think he’d want his fans to appreciate it instead of hoarding it to himself. He should at least play through it and post it. Even if it’s through Microsoft something needs to be done and the game needs to be released one day. I don’t think we should give up so easily. It’s not like we’re asking for much tbh

Even IF RARE LTD was making this RPG on the Super Nintendo and later the N64, I really believe we should not assume nor expect that this was going to be an "RPG" like we know of from back in the 90s... at best all this game was was a development concept so for the programmers and designers at the old 90s RARE, it would be safe to see them re-evaluating their ideas and coming to the conclusion of what was possible given that the early 3d era was still heavily about these professional game programmers figuring out how to design any game on the 3d polygon world let alone make for the custom hardware of the N64. Basically it was much safer to revise their ideas and thus the game project and it makes far more sense as Banjo Kazooie 1... note that other old RARE N64 games felt like arcade like tech demos where they were exploring the potential of the 3d power of the N64 in the first couple of years so it wasn't like RARE were all of a sudden expert programmers on N64 and 3d games which ironically they DID become as they really flexed some incredible power and made some shocking gameplay design like Goldeneye 007 while other FPSs just looked primitive and backwards like the leap between 8bit to 16bit especially if you paid attention to the details. Also their RPG idea would have made more sense on the Super Nintendo as a prerendered CGi 2d game than a 3d game especially when RPGs kinda need larger install base anyway.
