REM Sleep - How Much Sleep Do You Need
REM Sleep - How Much Sleep Do You Need
When you wake up in the morning, how do you feel?
Do you feel refreshed and ready to go?
Or do you feel sluggish and groggy, and maybe even grumpy?
And this stat right here is crazy:
According to the CDC,
Only 1/3rd of adults get the recommended minimum of seven or more hours of sleep every night.

The most common reason for this is trouble falling or staying asleep, aka insomnia.
This could be related to stress. It can also be related to too much caffeine (coffee) or alcohol or side effects from medication. It could also be related to other habits that you don't even realize.
But other medical conditions could be the root cause of the problem, like sleep apnea and depression.
Not getting good sleep takes its toll on your overall well-being and hugely impacts your productivity.
And not getting good sleep impacts your life in so many ways.
Some takeaways from this video:
1. Deep sleep, which occurs in Non-REM sleep, is essential for body repair.
2. REM sleep is essential for learning, memory formation, and optimal brain power.
3. To maximize deep sleep and REM sleep duration, you need at least 7-8 hours per night.
4. Your internal clock is regulated by external factors like light. If you can, follow your internal clock, which means go to bed when it's it's dark and wake up when it's daylight.
5. Average amount of sleep for teenagers | Amount of sleep for teenager | Amount of sleep a teenager needs
There is way more to sleep than I covered in this video.
If you haven't already, make sure "o check out my video "The 6 Keys "o a Great Night Sleep."
This way, you can maximize your chances of getting enough REM and non-REM deep sleep every night to get you at your peak performance.

Does heavy use of cannabis afftect REM sleep?? Is using it for a good nights sleep actually causing more harm?? How can I tell if I’ve had REM. I don’t remember dreams….for a long time….. I don’t remember any dreams
I find it ironic that the medical profession has the science to correlate sleep with performance, yet the culture of the medical industry makes it difficult for it's workers to get good sleep because of the schedules that are encouraged or sometimes mandatory. Nurses taking long double shifts, hospital doctors working for 24 hours at a time, and residents doing extra long work weeks, etc.

The problem is that there aren’t enough professionals in this field, injuries don’t just go to bed at 11pm someone has to take care of the patients

This is so true. There is a shortage of people working in the medical field. And yes, hospitals should be staffed 24/7 as emergencies don't care for the day and the hour. The shifts should be a bit shorter and the day should be shared by more staff.

Question? I work in sleep medicine and I’ve never understood why we prescribe SSRIs when they clearly delay REM onset, snd yet that’s what people with depression need. 🤷🏻♀️
I love how Dr. Mike’s intro is silent. Just awesome. Especially when you wake up at 2:30 am and decide to watch it. Btw I’m 36 and yesterday I was about to make a phone call but I fell asleep at 7 pm holding my phone. 😅 Wild Fridays.

Dr. Hansen, thank you for all of the critical information that you have imparted to us over the last nine months, I really appreciate your advice.
I guess I am one of the 1/3 of adults that gets seven plus hours of sleep every night. I actually function best when I get eight hours of sleep at night.
Thanks you Dr.Mike Hansen for2 sharing this video.

I had issues getting 7-8 hours of sleep up until about 2 months ago when my new psychiatrist looked at the notes from my previous psychiatrist about my sleep issues and prescribed me an antipsychotic medication called Risperdal which has mild sedative effects. I have Bipolar 2 disorder and the biggest issue I had falling asleep was struggling with racing thoughts that prevented me from falling asleep. Since I started taking the Risperdal I have been getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I actually get up around 6-7 in the morning without feeling tired which is a whole new experience for me and I am starting to feel healthier! Well except this past week. I'm battling a respiratory illness right now and the cough medication is making it hard for me to sleep...ugh. But I can definitely say from experience that getting the right amount of sleep does benefit us all like the doctor says.
And then there those of us who experience conscious sleep, stages out of order, and both narcolepsy and insomnia. Oh the things most people take for granted ...a good nite's sleep!

And physical exercise. Also no led light unless it has very little blue. Have a pitch dark room. No electronics going with those horrible bright blue leds AND no radio frequencies like a cell phone within 6 feet of your head. This is because the radio waves from transmitting devices, interfere with one's brain waves as they flood your brain in sleep that is different during full consciousness. This tends to prevent the progression into the deepest sleep and that's where your mind and body is being repaired from the days use. Dr Karl Kruzecniski from Sydney Australia where he works/ used to(?) at the University of Sydney said that in a tripleJ radio science call in show he did or still does (I'm not sure now,) a number of years ago. (The ABC Australia is a publicly funded by government expenditure at arm's length control, media network. Triple J is a youth network national station. Good for everybody. It's Like the PBS but it does not rely upon donations for survival.)
Good!

I have always had issues sleeping, on an average I would sleep 3 hrs a day. Also I am caffeine r n alcohol addicted. But I don't feel that bad, I rat healthy n workout 5 days a week. I am more active than people around me. It's generally videos like this which makes me anxious otherwise I am okay
Thank you Doctor for your videoclip I can only sleep average 6 hours a day
What if I always naturally awake after 6 hours of sleep but don't feel great?
A sleep app has been a game changer
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2019 and then my recent study this year came out normal. Either one was a false positive or one was a false negative… my rem sleep sucks though
Dr. Henson do you not work more than 12 hours on the shift if so do you get enough sleep when you are working your shift?
Its good to see that he shot this video in the kitchen
Hi Dr. Could you please make a video about sleep apnea, the causes and the cure?
I did not expect that Kelly reference at 8:10 LMAO. That was 👌
Watching this when I should be sleeping
For five years I couldn't sleep more than two hours at a time. I had to alternate sleep and waking all night. Then for three years I was able to sleep up to four hours at a time. Finally I could sleep six hours at once, for three years. Now I conk out for 12 hours at a time. I don't think that's probably good for me, but I'm so grateful for deep sleep I'll take it.
Deck! 😄 just kidding Dr. Mike. Informative talk about sleep. Look forward to part 2. Hope you're having a great turkey day. 🦃🤗
I read a paper recently about lack of sleep and memory in worms. All-nighters aren't helpful folks. If you'd like to remember some stuff, learn it and get some good sleep and the memory consolidation will happen and you'll remember it well.
Can you recommend a good book on the subject for a teenager? Can lack of sleep impair growth and stature?
I don't have a problem falling asleep but I dream a lot and they are so vivid and imaginative that they wake me up some time with a headache. I don't understand why my dreams are so powerful and diverse stories like in a movie. they disturbed me some time.

I have dac2. I dont need 8 hours of sleep and still feel well rested and refreshed in the morning. My coworkers are jealous of my brain power at work. Sometimes their insecurity affects my sleep. How do i combat that to ensure i will continue to get the good sleep?

HIIT cardio makes me ampy. It's weight lifting that helps me sleep well.
Any tips to increase deep sleep? And to prevent waking up an hour after I falla sleep to urinate? Believe me it's not water intake/liquid. Not sodium either or carb. I fall asleep pretty easily but I still get up like 5 times a night. It's not sleep apnea, and not stress and I've utilized everything I can possibly think of to try an improve my sleep. The only thing that prevents waking up as many times is if I over eat and consume way too many carbs. But I can't keep doing that or i end up gaining weight.
Thank you Doc.Mike for sharing this very informative topic about sleep. God bless stay safe and handsome as you are..
Doctor Mike Hansen Thank s wow Great Jehovah God bless you abadantly Very much nice advice 🌹💞🌹Ⓜ🌹🌍🌹☝🌹👌🌹👍🌹🌹
I'm fine with 4hrs of sleep, can't have more if I'm not physically exhausted. The older i get the shorter i sleep. If you have a job you have regular schedule of sleep but when your just at home it is irregular and just when you feel it. i notice physical exhaustion makes me fall asleep, but mental exhaustion makes me up. The hormones can also disrupt sleep, the ovulation period will make you up or the early days before period will make your brain active. But if my bp is very low i get tired and sleepy but the longer i sleep it makes me sick and dizzy. If I am tense i can't sleep, anxiety also ads more problem. The worse thing i do is eat carbs to fall asleep and it is not healthy but it does make me sleepy.
Nice video I want sleep nicely but two 3 ours my sleep brake now this tree years happened to me.. Give me some medicine for sleep.. God bless you.
And what part does spinal fluid play in sleep and mental repair?
Thanks for making this- I need 8 and NEVER get it, only solution is going to bed earlier . I wonder if I can count the hour of sleep I get sometimes when I fall asleep in front of the TV BEFORE I go to bed. LoL
Even after sleeping for 8 hrs I feel sleepy throughout the day.
Hi, interesting subject,i hope i can follow your guidance about it. Thank you so much. Dtay safe Ghoulihan
Is it ok to sleep like 4 or 5 am till noon time the following day? Is this healthy? This kind of sleep affect our body? And will this supplement the 7 to 8 hrs sleep needed in our body?
What about power naps?
Dear Mike, I would love to ask for your opinion on the theory, that we should preferably go to sleep before 12 pm. My experience shows that, if I go to sleep at around 11pm, I wake up fresh even at 7 am next morning, while going to sleep around 1 am, even if I sleep till 9 next day, I wake up a bit groggy. Thank you for your professional opinion. And for the useful videos! :)

Thank you for commenting on this specific aspect of sleep! 🙏🤩My father continues to quote the following adage, “every hour of sleep that one receives before midnight, is equal/is equivalent to ‘two(2)’ hours of sleep that one receives after midnight.”(I know I didn’t precisely quote the original) According to that of your experiences, and that which you are theorizing, there most-assuredly, exists a significant amount of validity to this! My curiosity is piqued, as well 😊

Can you make a video about the MTHFR genetic mutation?
I wonder how accurate those apps. Are that show you your sleep patterns? Curious how much REM sleep I actually get.
I recently started wearing my Apple Watch to monitor amount of sleep I get. I have upped my water intake and it causes me to rise 3 sometimes 4 times per night so I only get roughly 4:26hr of core and avg 50 mins of deep sleep. I am still grumpy and irritable during most days. Time in bed=8+hr but avg sleep time 6 and half hours. Is this normal? I think bladder/prostate issue may be hindering overall sleep but reluctant to mess with my plumbing.
What about the old first sleep and second sleep shifts?
@DoctorMikeHansen is 2 hours or REM per 7-8 hours of sleep too much? Usually 8 cycles on average, 28 F
I've hardly ever felt bursting ready to go waking. Since a teenager. I'm now entering the 'older' group- my 6th decade. Life's short.
I habitually go to bed after 2am but also get my seven hours of deep sleep. Don't know about REM. Is this okay or do I HAVE TO sleep earlier. I prefer slow mornings but can race out of bed if needed.
*Hi doctor I am 63 years old male 102 kilos suffering from Aerophagia / Belching or Burping* *It started early 80's lasted few months went away came back again in 2004 severely i took nexum 40mg morning 40mg evening gradually reducing doses until I got out of it till 2008 came back in 2012 off and on 2 years came back in 2018 till* *Now taking omeprazole 20mg from time to time until someone mentioned melatonin i tried .03mg it worked very well but I am afraid of the side effects if I take it prolong because one lady mentioned on KZread she took it for one year her life went upside down suffering from insomnia* *So please doctor what you recommend thank you very much God bless your soul*
Why do the eyes move around?
Well, apparently I have no circadian rhythm cause I'm on Dr. angel face's page trying to get some magic tips, and now I'm just distracted by him jumping into that fluffy bed all by himself wondering why he's alone and how the hell does a critical care doctor have energy to make videos and frankly just hating myself for every single choice I ever made in life. So there's that. I swear I've never felt so alone and tired of everything.
