Fun fact: Tappei (author of re zero) wrote an alternate ending in which Rem accepted Subaru's proposal called the Sloth IF route. Some shenanigans happened, but surprisingly it was actually a very happy and wholesome ending, if you ignore the fact that everyone Subaru knew in Lugunica is probably dead.

Also, the nature of sloth (the sin) is that one's lazy habits will naturally lead them to feeling regret out of the oppurtunities they missed out on. It's very possible that, at the end of the Sloth IF story, Subaru's RBD triggered again and he was forced to return to this moment because of that. (There's also an IF story where he grows up by decades to avenge Rem, dies, and RBD sends him to Episode 18).

@@naopoint4096 there’s a chance, but considering how pride if ends, we know that there’s a chance that RBD won’t let Subaru die until he’s satisfied. If he becomes content enough, would he RBD?

What's funny about episode 18 is that most of the things Subaru says about himself are true and are the complaints people have about him when they watch him screw around in episode 12+, but when they actually see him list all of his flaws accurately, they're visibly uncomfortable for one reason or another.

Loved your reaction but i have one thing to say! subaru didn’t have a moment of “self realization” while talking abt what he hated about himself, he’s always known that this was the kind of person he is. even though he hates those things about himself, he still can’t change them on a whim, it’s very realistic! i like that his self hatred isn’t solved in just one convo. One of the main themes of rezero is love, self love is one of them and i think what the author is doing with subaru’s character is absolutely beautiful! i love his development in season 1, season 2, and in the novels. he’s such an amazing character

After few years my perspective has shifted, I like how Subaru was blunt about whom he loves & you cant just switch that suddenly. Even Rem liked the version of Subaru who was driven, driven cuz of his love for Emilia. But i still stand by the fact it could've been done in a bit better way, but one can argue that Subaru isnt good with social stuff & we see more about why later.

Honestly it's better to be honest than just lead her on. But yes, maybe an "i'm sorry, but i like Emilia". Still, the hate is overblown, he has a choice, a valid a reasonable one at that.

Hate is definitely overblown & even i didn't do it that much, but i dislike there was no "Thanks/I'm sorry, but I love Emilia". I think it would have been okay if even animated to show how he got a little shocked but then a bit conflicted to say it (or something along the lines that better fit the scene cuz this doesn't & I'm not a writer)

When you said imagine they had an entire life together. Ohhhh boy, you have no idea what you just said. Alternative timelines are not out of the question

I’m so glad you guys realized that Subaru didn’t love Rem at this point. So many people were upset at this episode SO MANY. it was made into memes, people were calling Subaru the worst protagonist ever. Subaru obviously loved Emilia, if anything he would be kind of a fuck boy if he immediately loved Rem after this. And i like that he was being honest with her, Rem even said “Yes” after he told her he loved Emilia. Shes always known, she saw him sleeping in Emilias lap. You got it exactly right, Rem didn’t go into the conversation wanting to confess to Subaru. It might seem completely selfless but she was trying to support him initially. After he vented out such deep hatred for himself, the only thing she could really do was be honest and tell him how SHE sees him. Rem isn’t a perfect waifu, she is very flawed. And her crying afterwards shows how human she is, as she knows she just got rejected. Also I personally don’t think she wants to give up on Subaru just yet. Shes a fairly stubborn girl. Its funny how divisive this episode is, I personally loved this episode when it came out and it made me really like Subarus character in retrospect. Watching this back after season 2, and even further as i read the novels, is quite amazing to see. The author REALLY took his time developing Subaru. And this was an episode that permanently ruined his character for others. I cant name how many reactors hated his character after this

Rem knew that Subaru loved Emilia when she was going into that conversation. The "yes" was clearly a "yes, I know". She didn't have any of the expectations that all the people who hate him for saying he loves Emilia do.

@@BelBelle468 yeah i'm not really fond of how the anime handle rem character by removing most/some of her toxic side, make her this "perfect waifu" by making her obession as this "cute" things for the viewer to be lean on. It does so much damage to how people view Subaru and Emilia as a character, some people and reactors literally hate the show because rem got "rejected", some literally doesn't care and hate emilia when in fact she does nothing to guaranteed the hate, and some hate Subaru for staying true to his feelings and blame all the things that happened to rem to him. And it does some damage to the anime/series as a whole as well, because most read and watch this series only just for her, her toxic side fanbase doesn't help either.

Reminder that Beako can detect curses and best Human Mage is Subaru’s boss - both didn’t detect any curse…Because it actually isn’t , wouldn’t it be fun if Witch was simply monitoring Subaru 24/7 with her witch magic?

In case you didn't notice, Wilhelm says Van Astrea because Subaru knows Reinhard Van Astrea. I mean, he is telling Subaru that he is Reinhard's grandfather.

Just a little note: Puck said "Gluttony's... " He didn't finish the sentence, but the subtitles got it wrong and that made a lot of people misunderstand

I really like the character development Subaru is ongoing in this series.... Its feels real in the fantasy world setting. It makes more sense why subaru didn't even panicked when he got transported to this world cuz for him it was like running away from his previous life. But at rem's confession he chose not to runaway & finally started his life again, that whole monologue episode is just raw emotions at peak between 2 characters, I just love it.

20 mins of pure dialogue but STILL the best episode for me Also I heard that the song that plays when rem was talking was sang by her va. Rem best girl.

Man I thought you were going to hate Subaru again because of that by how you acted before. There are so many people that hate that part in ep 18 but you guys actually understood it unlike so many. Im so happy about that for reals

So this point of subaru choosing to run away with Rem actually is a turning point and if subaru didn't gain the resolve to keep going from rem and rem decided to be selfish and run away with him they would have lived together and gotten married and have children he would have completely chosen sloth. The author made it into a what if story titled what if sloth.

In the sloth IF story, Subaru does still end up with important character growth similar to what he has in the main timeline, but it takes him YEARS to get to that point, and basically everyone but him and Rem dies. I feel like the message of that whole side story was that if you’re slothful, even if you eventually get things on track you’ll have wasted many important opportunities before getting to a good place in life.

This is the episode that ignited the Waifu Wars

I appreciate the "I love Emilia" line sooo much. It's brutal but fits the show and characters. And it offsets the trope of "girl gave a pep talk and now he's fixed". Subaru is still very broken and I think he was STILL trying to hurt Rem to get her to hate him the way he hates himself.

I don’t think he was trying to make her hate him at all, I just think they did a bad job conveying the scene from the original books into the anime. In the books Subaru says the “I love Emilia” line with a bit more hesitation and they explain what’s on his mind a lot better. He isn’t trying to make Rem hate him, he just wants to be honest and fair with her and not lead her on when he doesn’t feel that type of way about her (not yet anyway… he DOES eventually get there)

Fun fact: Rem actually uses water magic. In Re:Zero water magic ha the ability to make ice and heal

YAY DIRECTORS CUT!!!!! The 2016 Airing cut out the scene where Subaru says he loves Emilia and Rem hugging Subaru.

18:47 This is why I think the most touching thing Rem says in the whole speech is when she says “I can’t run away with you” right at the very beginning. Subaru offers her the life she has been dreaming of and wants more than anything, and she turns down the thing she wants most in the world because it wouldn’t be what’s best for Subaru. She had her dream life dropped into her lap and said no to it because she cares about him. If that’s not the most genuine expression of love, I don’t know what is.

Fun Fact: Subaru have inferiority and white knight syndrome. Since the beginning Subaru see many and many people who are better than him, even the girl, who he wants to protect, is stronger than him, he always felt that way, he can't perceive his qualities also; with all this situation and his backstory, it's not hard to imagine why he is feeling so insufficient, lol

9:08 that cut to her death always gives me chills. and seeing him wince to the traumatic memory and she didn't notice was such a sharp twist of the knife.

With the whale, I assume it the mist, that what she sad and why the lost can't have Graves cause they can't remember them. Though I guess they feel something off too. But I also assume it possible that whale could easily kill people too and your not forgotten. I guess it a matter of how it does it.

And he figure out next spawn point of white whale but he don't have accurate info about next spawn point white whale. So even without subaru involvement, White whale vs Crusch Camp will happen. Aw man, rem's confession always gets me no matter how many times I see it. 😅 BTW, the song in the background is sung by her voice actress, called "Wishing". It's lovely In the light novels there's several chapters of an "what if" story where Rem and Subaru did run off together and lived a happy life together, had two adorable kids and thrived. Also, in the LN, it's obvious and plainly stated that subaru loves Rem as well.

The wind of Truth divine protection also came into the fact in previous restarts, which is why she thought Subaru was insane cuz to her he suddenly got info about witch cultists. And the translation is a bit wrong about wife, she's the "Previous Master swordsman" and NOT "First master swordsman", cuz Satella was sealed by a divine swordsman, great sage & dragon. Also reminder its Petel-guese & not Betelguese. Flügel (the great sage, who planted the big tree, the one who helped seal Satella) not whatever they said this episode.

Something I'm beginning to realize about THAT line is that it probably didn't come from a place of "pure love", more so it seems like after being pulled out of that breakdown and being given permission by Rem to "start from Zero" he literally did just that, and recalled where this all started for him and refreshed the initial feelings he adopted. He still doesn't even really know Emilia yet, so to me that phrase "I love Emilia" feels more like grasping for a baseline of motivation to choose what he would do next. In other words, he actively "decided" to love Emilia FOR REAL from this point forward based on what he perceives to be his "From Zero" point of view. Y'know, instead of forcing his selfish need for approval on her and everyone else, like he's been doing. And yeah, it's unfortunate that Rem is in love with someone who is in love with someone else. But if it helps, you should know... she'll get over him.

Potential spoiler I don't believe the loss of memory of a person aplies to people that die of wounds sustained while fighting the whale, only to people that are killed by the whale directly.

I can understand people who come to dislike Subaru in that particular scene of EP 18, though people tend to do it for the wrong reason. Subaru has every right to not love someone, so him rejecting Rem is totally fine. My problem comes right AFTER it; he starts saying all this stuff about how much he loves Emilia, wanting to see her smile, be next to her, etc, which is not a bad thing in itself, but i find it totally rude and selfish to say it right in front of the person who confessed to you, he could had totally say "I love Emilia" and cut it there, the rest seemed a bit extra IMO. Don't get me wrong though, Subaru is in my top 3 Re:Zero characters and i love how realistically written he is, but man he didn't have to go that hard with his feelings about Emilia 😭
